That the second best Free Agent in the league this year, someone courted by every team, decided to stay with our team. A team that has some bad ownership issues, a very difficult media, and a fanbase that at times does not appreciate what it has.

I think he posted a classy message on his webpage, and I look forward to getting cable again to see what Phil, Derek, and Carmelo can put together.

IMHO, for this not to be a complete disaster, the knicks need to make it to the ECF twice in the next 5 years.
so here is what phil is thinking ....

As fans, we can be unrealistic at times....May I ask, how do you come to this conclusion? And why only 2? Why not make it 3 out of 5? Hell, 5 out of 5

But:

Those shoulders!!!!
Fan preference he take less money to show his true character!! Thats the real test of "Did he just come for the money"!
He used the Mecca word. That Mooby Illuminati speak for "I got mine, get yours!!"
He is in business with .50 cent to sell headphones. Lebron got 32mil for his share of "Beats". Oops.

Im happy we retained an asset. Im ok with melo and his money don't bother me. Its my money that Im concerned about.
I want the team to succeed. is that so wrong?

Not at all...Never knew, and never cared about Bernard Kings salary. Just wanted the Knicks to win. It was up to the front office to put the pieces together. If the Zen Master put that contract in front of Melo, I have to assume he feels he can still build a really good team around that contract.

Its been reported that PJax was uninterested in a sign and trade. Letting an asset like Melo walk for nothing i return is bad business. PJax ain't here for a complete rebuild. With that info, outline an appropriate 5 year plan...

People that bring up Melo's max contract defended Allan Houston's max contract. There is no consistency. They contain cause they don't like him. It's obvious this guy is a huge talent.

Our fans are the greatest fans in the NBA IMO. the past 15 years have been tough so you cant blame fans for being a little hesistant. Also appreciating melo for his skills is one thing but its time for him to tske it to another level as well. I know some dont like when his playoff record is brough up but it cant be ignored either. Knick fans deserve to have a good playoff run

We've had the concept of a "max" contract in the NBA for more than a decade. Based on that history, a player of Melo's caliber and accomplishment at his age deserves the max and to suggest any less is asinine. We can free up the cap space for future years, but there are very few players that will be available that will better fit this salary slot than Melo. I have to trust Phil Jackson here- I don't think he would've made the strong move to retain him if he didn't feel he could build this around him.

We couldn't do a total rebuild due to having no pick in 2016. There was no point in reducing our salary cap to zero in the hope of signing two all stars in 2015 because they have all either re-signed, opted out early or will be traded. I hate giving him the full five years, but realistically he ain't coming back for less. Plus the new cba is up for discussion in 2017 so hopefully they add another amnesty clause to cover us!

thats a great point. I could see that happening. Hopefully we don't do a stupid thing like we did last time with Tyson.

I think most people are more excited with Hardaway's continuing development and cleanthony early(steal of the draft} more than melo resigning. Hardaway was probably the only bright spot last year and so far in summer league he looks even betetr. Hu put of some muscle and looks like he is becoming a leader even though he only played one year. Early is a terrific shooter and athlete and also plays good defense. Finally we have some talented youth and i feel these 2 will help us

LOL you mean YOU are more excited about that? I don't really see where the "most" comes in.

Also, I like Timmy but he's showing signs of becoming a chucker. He obviously is still capable of change but it has me a little concerned.

Knicksfan: Hypocrite league that fines players after the game for flopping but in the game and with obvious flopping they call the fouls.

I dont think hardaway is overrated. Im teh first to admit his defense was god awful and his handle needs some work but from what i ahve seen so far he looks like hae has worked on it but it will take time. Early needs to learn to dive mpre because sooner or later defnders will start taking away his outside shot

Dont worry man i wasnt trying to say they were better than melo or anything but im sorry taht i like young talent since we havent had much(motsly because we tarde them away for bloated contracts) I know you think i dislike melo but i dont. I just get frustrated with him because i feel there is another level he csn go to. I think he can be a good defender when he puts in the effort and he is a ery good passer but he needs to be a willing passer. Belive it or not criticism isnt a bad thing, it actually means you like the player and want to see him do better, I admit im a big hardaway fan but i have no problem pointing out his flaws

I'm not a fan of Tim Jr- I just see a streaky chucker who plays zero defense. I usually like our rookies, but I could never really get excited about him last season.

Well i guess there are a few who dont like him but i think he was one of the positives in a bad season. His defense was bad but he will improve. Watching him in teh summe rleague he is very vocal and is not afraid to get in the face of the rookies. Kid has a good makeup and his scoring will be needed. Also 99% of theknciks dont play defense. Shumpert is porbably our best defender. I mean we knwo Bargs melo and amare dont play defense so they all need to improve
