Now that we are resigning melo to what looks to be a fair contract there is a lot of good stuff falling into place for this team.

1. We have our franchise guy to start with. It will always be a debate how good he really is but he's our franchise player and seems to be the first real mainstay on this team since Ewing that brings a real identity to this team.

2. Phil has it covered. His first trade with the Knicks showed what he can do. He saw an opportunity and was in position of power with that deal, instead of the other way around which is typically the case. Most of us wanted a draft pick for tyson. Phil sold high and got rid of Felton at the same time. He added assets and unloaded dead weight at the same time. His approach to melo's free agency was also solid and netted a good outcome.

3. We are building back the pipeline of youth and assets. No more jokes with this team about trading every pick and having no young talent to develop or for future deals. Hardway jr, shumpert, larkin, early, and a couple of players stashed overseas represent a nice start to the future.

4. Cap space is right around the corner. We will have huge flexibility to add to an established core of vets and youth.

5. A real system and good culture. There is an identity with this team to build on top of.

Keep in mind we aren't a contender but there are at least a ton of things to get excited about to keep us going. We have a ton of opportunities moving forward.

You just state as if it is a fact that making him the highest paid player on the planet is a fair contract?!

Shump, Hardaway, Larkin, Thanasis, Early, Cole, and maybe Tyler on the 15 man roster. That is a lot of youth for a team that has traded away so many draft picks.

They will have to continue flooding the roster with young players if they are ever going to compete for a championship.Even if their playing time hurts playoff seeding and costs the team a season or 2. They need some of these guys to turn into Ariza's , or David Lee. They need some real production on cheap deals to offset Car-money's deal

Good post OP except the jury is out on Melo's contract. Thats alot of money for a guaranteed deal at the age of 30. Hoping the discount are in the years we have cap space.

Are the details of his contract even out yet? Serious question.
Knicksfan: Hypocrite league that fines players after the game for flopping but in the game and with obvious flopping they call the fouls.

I wonder how Amare & Andrea will work in the triangle this coming season. Our rebounding and front court defense is pretty limited.

If we have to give up assets to do that, Id rather let them expire.

it took philjax a few weeks to do what knicks haven't been able to do in the last 10 years: they got us a real point guard

To be honest im very excited for the youth on this team more than anything. Happy melo is back but calling 122 million for a 30 year old a fair contract is a bit much. More like very generous contract(on phil's part) since thats more money than most players including top players liek lebron and durant

To me, the Knicks aren't back yet. There is a lot of things to do.

The Knicks are on the right track, though!

I seriously doubt it, besides, I would rather wait and see how these 2 play the first month.

Seriously no reason to take back a player who is slightly more useful but cuts into future cap space and thats all your going to get, An overpaid long term deal that someone wants to dump or as I like to call it the Isiah Thomas method of building a team

1) the contract is not fair to the knicks it's outrageous.
2) one hopes that the team's identity is based on system basketball, and not merely one underachieving one-way player-- franchise guy? please
3) fifteen months and an entire season is not right around the corner.
4) a team culture is good only if players buy into it. primadonnas have a hard time buying in. they believe they ARE the culture as you have already unfortunately alluded to in (2).

i am resigned to being indifferent unless there is something truly miraculous coming up this year but the more likely event is that we will witness shouldergate.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

Wait a second, is Phil retarded or not, because if I remember correctly you knew exactly how much Phil valued Melo....so you should be the authority on what's Phil thought process??!!
