This seems like bad news either way. He either walks for the lakers or this report was invented to make him taking the Max from the Knicks more palatable. I don't like where this is headed.

If it came from notorious Knick hater Bill Simmons then i wouldn't worry too much cause he like to stir up trouble with the Knicks.

That's a good take on it, Dagger. I kinda feel the same way. I mean what's up with this guy?

After all this nonsense -- if he does anything other than sign with the Knicks for a little less than the Knicks max, I'm gonna be pissed. Come on -- you said you would take less to help NY build a winner, now let's see it! Put up or shut up!!! Take $110mm instead of $129mm (still millions more than any other team other than NY could offer him outright) and let's do something here! Keep your word!

Said it right from the beginning -- if he wants out, fine. I know some of these other teams might be able to provide a better chance to win right away. But for Pete's sake TRADE THE F'IN GUY!!! Sit him down and work together with Phil to force yourself to another team -- if another team really wants him, cough up a promising player or two, a draft pick or 2 and a couple of extra bucks and he's yours!!!! Not even looking to fleece another team here. Just gimmie something worthwhile for a star this big...He has a lot of say in how this goes down and kinda owes us that -- we coughed up a lot to get him and his time in NY was unfulfilling. You want out, there's the door -- just don't stab us in the back on the way out. Look, he's a grown man and can do what he wants to do but if he's really done in NY, there's gotta be a way to make the split somewhat amicable for everyone involved. I mean Jesus, there's gotta be a way for this to work out for everyone -- Melo, his new team and the Knicks, esp. with all the competition out there for the guy. Back when we got him, it was just us vs. Prokhorov. Now there's at least 4 legit teams interested in him. Been sayin' it for weeks -- if he leaves for nothing, it's an EPIC FAIL!

Melo was offered the max for some time now so I don't know if that holds any water. If just the idea of Jackson suggesting it bothers Melo that much after he made the offer himself, that would seem odd. Lots of rumors floating around, we should know the truth soon enough.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/sources--lakers-move-into-contention-to-sign-carmelo-anthony-000119352.html

The Los Angeles Lakers have ascended into serious contention to sign New York free agent Carmelo Anthony, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Lakers moved into strong consideration with the front-running New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls over this weekend, sources told Yahoo Sports.

No one with direct knowledge of the process would declare the Lakers had overtaken New York and Chicago in Anthony's mind, but one source close to Anthony said of the Lakers, "They're in the game now."

The Lakers met with Anthony on Friday, offering him a four-year, $97 million contract. Lakers star Kobe Bryant has been in constant contact with Anthony, and the Lakers could re-sign Pau Gasol to pair with Anthony on the frontline.

The Lakers' roster is stripped of talent, and the combination of Bryant and Anthony possessing max contracts would limit the financial flexibility to upgrade the roster. Nevertheless, Anthony keeps a home in Los Angeles and the franchise's pitch has resonated with him.

After Friday's meeting with Knicks president Phil Jackson and coach Derek Fisher, sources told Yahoo Sports that Anthony had become more comfortable with Jackson's plan to use him as the cornerstone to lure free agent stars into salary cap space in 2015 and '16. One thing that still bothers Anthony is Jackson had wanted him to take less than a max contract, sources told Yahoo Sports.

Anthony, 30, is a seven-time NBA All-Star.

Just leave

These guys are such divas, lebron at the top of the list. Keeping all these teams and other free agents hostage. You whined and dined. Good for you. Make a move. You know the deal.

3 teams enter, 1 team offers the least money but the best chance to win now. The other 2 teams have a plan to win later. If you are taking the win later, why not take the $$ now. "LA is in the game now" I can definitely understand the Melo quote.

I thought California actually had more taxes than NY. And good luck to Melo if he goes to the Lakers.

My guess is Pau will go back if Melo signs there. Pau, Melo and Kobe isn't a bad big three if Kobe is back.

it's true....either way we move on though. I feel like we can win with or without him. We can retool or reload...doesn't matter.

It would be nice to get something back. Have to wonder if Melo is using this as leverage to get a sign and trade to Chicago. Noah's quotes seemed like he doesn't expect Melo to go there though.

I kind of feel like $$ is Melo's kryptonite and Phil knows that. He has been around too long to be naive. I think he wants a rebuild, but is to zen to say it

I was listening to the Dan LeBetard show the other day and he was goin' in on all of these player agents saying they are the one that are leaking all the bad info to the media. Why is it that the Lakers weren't considered serious yesterday when the actual meeting took place, but now a day later, after the Knick meeting, the Lakers are all of a sudden a serious contender?

Here's my take. Leon Rose, Melo's agent is leaking this info about the Lakers being serious contender to land Melo as a negotiation ploy. Perhaps Melo is not going to take the max, but Leon Rose wants as much as he can get, maybe somewhere around $115 mil. I know its out there that the max is on the table, but Phil would prefer that Melo take less as Melo has stated. But what is less? That's whats being discussed during negotiation IMO....and this sudden Laker interest is a way to snatch up every last penny by Rose...

But the Knicks have already offered Melo the Max, the only person Rose has left to influence is Melo. Why would he need a leaked story to communicate with his own client? It is up to Melo what happens next, not Phil, and it is Melo that needs decide whether he will accept 100 mil, 115 mil, 129 mil etc...
