"Derek Fisher, set to be announced Tuesday as the new coach of the Knicks, is expected to hire triangle offense guru Kurt Rambis as his top assistant, according to a source.

The Knicks already have asked the Lakers for permission to speak with Rambis, who coached Fisher and still is under contract as a Lakers assistant."

hate Rambis as a head coach. When I heard him mentioned I thought oh god please no... but as a thinker and aid to Fisher, he's a good fit.

I wonder how hiring Kurt Rambis would affect our pursuit of Kevin Love (assuming that we're even a preferred destination for him).

Yep the players would not respect him. They see him as a retread. Rambis, Cleamons, Walton, Cartwright & Harper is a hell of a coaching staff. They will make Fisher's transition go a lot smoother. Everyone on the same page top to bottom

I think Phil realizes that not everyone is best equipped to be the Head Coach. Doesn't mean they don't have things to contribute to winning BB. I think Phil will make sure the staff is strong and covers all the bases. Just think about who Woodson had behind him... Then compare them with the guys Phil is likely to bring in and it's going to be a stark difference.

Fish off to a great start. He just keeps saying ALL of the right things. Day 1, handle the NY media to perfection - Check

Derek Fisher said he hopes to have his staff in place by the start of the Las Vegas Summer League next month.
“Obviously, we want to prepare for the Vegas Summer League, so hopefully we can do it soon,” the new Knicks coach said at his introductory press conference. “That’s going to be very important.”
Asked if he would have former head coaches on his staff — Kurt Rambis, among others, has been rumored – Fisher said it was a possibility.

“I don’t know if there’s a guarantee of that,” he said. “I know it’s been talked about a lot. I think finding the right balance is definitely going to be key, so I think experience will be key. Whether it’s a former head coach or not, we’ll get to that. But our staff is going to be important, not just because I don’t have any experience as a head coach but your staff is also a big key to success.”

Fisher figures to have other members of Phil Jackson’s inner circle on his staff, potentially including some mix of Bill Cartwright, Jim Cleamons and Frank Hamblen, as Frank Isola pointed out.

Will Fisher pick someone not associated with Phil? Is that allowed? I want some young coaches who looks at the analytics of bball. Does Fisher believe in the analytical side of bball?

If they are going to be teaching the triangle aren't people associated with Phil a good place to look? Also most people associated with Phil come from a winning culture which we are trying to build.

And, if analytics is the study of how teams win, isn't having people who have been on teams that win just as good as having guys who can crunch numbers on a computer?

Maybe guys he knows and has developed a relationship over the years.

Personally I have no problems is the staff is made up of 100% Phil guys.

He said mills will offer imput. Maybe mills handles the analytics himself or handpicks a guy

We shall see

Not thrilled, but I get the feeling he is there to help instill some discipline, to get on players who aren't up to speed. Rambis could be pretty intense from what I've read. It hurt him as a head coach but it might serve the team to have someone like that on Fisher's staff as an assistant.

Indy players said that Shaw had a role like that in Indy and that there was a void in that area without him.
