Could we max Melo out ($129/5 years) and then have some combination of team/player options involved in the contract that would be advantageous to both sides?

What I'm thinking is that Melo could have his run of player options from the 2014-2015 season to the 2016-2017 season. If we suck, he would have the option of leaving whenever he felt best OR stick around and collect his max money. If we are able to attract an all-star free agent in 2015 (or beyond) though, Melo could then opt out to accommodate the contract and renegotiate his deal.

For allowing Melo this much freedom to choose his destiny, the Knicks should then have a team option included for the 2018-2019 seasons, to get out of Melo's contract if his play declines. With so much uncertainty surrounding our future, this flexibility for both sides would be ideal. Thoughts?

At that kind of money no. It's not a good deal at all that ball busting cap killing deal leaves the team very few options. Besides if the Knicks continue to lose he would be a big reason why. His deal of 129/5 no thanks. If you are watching the playoffs you will see that the Heat are the only team winning easily the rest are all struggling and I hate to break it to you a lot of those teams don't have max player talent. The player who does have max player talent LeBron took less so he can have a team. These playoffs have been eye opening as to the direction the NBA is going. Atlanta, Memphis, Toronto, San Antonio, Portland these team are all devoid of Max player talent yet they are all playing well in the playoffs. Chicago has zero max players and same with Washington these are teams with good players at most positions.

So if you want to kill the cap with Melo go ahead but you just saw that without good team play and good players at most positions you won't get to far. We didn't even make the playoffs and Melo had a good year. Everybody else pretty much sucked. You want to win you must have talent.

Melo can get at least $90 mil guaranteed on the market IMO. He's not going to sign a contract with a team option after the 2nd or 3rd year.

What if there was only one team option and it came on the 5th year.

The salary cap jumped by $5 million in anticipation of the new TV deal that the NBA is suppose to sign. Now, imagine how much it'll increase by when they will actually sign it during the 2015 offseason. Melo's contract probably won't be that big of a deal, if we can make it worthwhile and get more star power.

So you're talking about us guaranteeing him about $100 mil to play his 12th to 15th seasons? No thanks. I'm sure plenty here would take that but I don't think he's worth that much.

The guy in not interested in money, he's interested in winning a damn title. The dude is worth a 100 mill if he never plays another game in his life.

He wants wha his buddies have..A TiTle

We spend to much time debating over the financial part of things or what chicago and houston has to offer, rather than looking at what the knicks have to offer.

Fck melo if he doesn't want to sign, treat his ass just like CANO.

IS THAT WHY he forced his way here before the lockout, fleecing a team he was being traded to?

He is nothing like cano.. I like cano, he won a title in NY, he wanted more money. I say he was greedy, but he did win here, now he wanted to get paid...as you guys say, "get your money melo".. well cano is entitled to the same thing..

It's why I prefer we trade him. Unfortunately though, I don't run the Knicks and the league doesn't seem to be too big on my 4 team trades involving 25 players that result in us getting Kevin Love. If we can't get anything in return for Melo, I much rather keep him and let the cards fall where they may. If that becomes our situation and we had to bribe Melo into staying, I would but only under these conditions.

absolutely not.. I just don't get why people are so scared to move on without this guy. you would have think we had a spurs type of run, or heat type of run with carmelo here.. but truth be told we have had runs here similar to those of the Isiah days... I just don't get it..

but why tie yourself into cap hell with carmelo and after the season we had? what do you lose by trading him and starting over?

If you max out Melo then you will see more of the same from this year.

TKF,
Does a mentorship of phil and Kerr with a buy in by Melo change your thinking at all that Melo, for a price less than max can be a good thing?

"taming of the shrew" part 3? Jordan, Kobe and perhaps Melo?
I would say at this age Melo would not be "Mt Rushmore" territory but we do know Melo is a very talented player who COULD be a great piece of a system.

Not ISO, not like Woodson used him. His stats would drop, but wins could go up?

Knicks not making the playoffs

Why? Because we don't have any assets or capspace to make a move next year. Then you have to worry about the following year when he is older and we are stuck with his albatross contract.

You dont even have opinions on Melo. You have tunnel vision hatred. How's Gallo?
