This doesn't really have to do with the Knicks but has everybody seen the rumors out there about possible trades for McGrady, one of which is Al Harrington, Jon Bender, and IND's 1st rounder for TMac.

I seriously can't see anybody beating a team of Tinsley, McGrady, Artest, ONeal, and Foster/Pollard, EC or WC, for a while.

Another was Joe Johnson, Shawn Marion, Jake Voshkuhl and a first rounder for McGrady. Suns would still have Barbosa and Stoudemire, and a ton of cap room.

Or Dallas giving up Antoine Walker to Orlando for Grant Hill and their first rounder (they get cap space).

Orlando could trade McGrady for Johnson, Marion, and the Suns' first rounder, then trade Grant Hill and their first rounder for Walker, and in a year still have cap room, still have a lotto pick this year, and still have 2 great young wing players in Marion and Johnson.

So to bring up Briggs rhetorical question again, if you are the Knicks in two seasons and you aren't really getting anywhere, do you trade Marbury for younger players and picks, and turn the expiring contracts of Houston, Anderson, and Norris into talented players or draft picks. I would say yes.

i doubt orlando trades hill. if he is hurt again and is considred done, the Magic will be able to get him off the cap in the middle of this year+ they have insurance paying out 80% of his contract.

Antoine Walker=crp

I think they keep the draft pick and work on the angle of moving Howard or Gooden and using the MLE on a PG. I can see them grabbing Gary Payton for 3 years with the MLE. Could Orlando trade Howard back to Denver for a package of a re-signed Chris Andersen Rodney White and Elson?
Or Can Orlando can go the route of trading McGrady for a Zach Randolph
Darius Miles+ draft pick package.

Orlando is in good position to do some things.

Dallas gets perhaps the overall no. 1 pick too! The rich get richer.

If they can maintain daniels, Howard, a no. 1 pick, thats rebuilding on the fly and providing a future. DIrk is still very young!

Marbs in two years will be 30, and still a few years left on a monstar contract. If he slips some in talent or injury takes its toll (11 years in league by then), its h20 all over again.

those are some interesing scenarios. The problem with the suns trade is that T-Mac has already shown that he can't carry a team even with marginal talent, I mean he could not keep the magic from losing 19 straigt in the weak east. now going west to the suns he won't have Marion, or Joe johnson, all he will have on that team is Amare and a bunch of prospects, in the west that spells more losing, even with having cap space...

I do like the pacers offer better, the magic would do better with Harrington, Bender, and the pacers first round pick, and use that pick on a PG,that would give the pacers a killer team tho...

As far as the knicks go, if after 3 years we are not headed in the right direction, with steph just turning 30, and in his prime, it may be the time then to trade him, while he still has high value and get some players and picks, at that time it may be a option, but right now... no way... But this is why getting a player like steph was important, his value is key in many ways...

actually steph will be 30 in 3 years, and really can you see him slipping right in the middle of his prime years, I mean these last few year for Kidd has been his best as a pro.... I see the same with steph, and in 3 years if the knicks need to explore trading him, we can still get a boat load of talent back for him....

"Orlando is in good position to do some things."

They are? They were the worst team in the league.
Their two more tradeable players play the same position in Howard and Gooden and the whole league knows they want to trade one.

Their franchise player couldnt prevent a 17 game losing streak, has had back troubles the last couple years and might opt out if they dont win right away next year. Then if they are slow getting out of the gate its a scramble to move TMac because you losing him for nothing sets you back 5 years.

Grant Hill is playing next year. He's made this clear 1000 times. Even if this is the last year he tries and never plays again his salary ruins the magic's cap space until the year AFTER next. You keep taking a cap hit for retired players for a whole year off, which would be after NEXT year if Hill plays so much a 20 seconds this year.

Payton by his own mouth is "a West coast guy." He said he wasnt resigning in Milwakee just for that reason, and a veteran like Gary wants to go to a good situation, NOT one like the Magic. If he's going anywhere East its the Pacers.

The MAgic lost over $3 mill in ticket sales last year.

What they DO have is a good draft pick, and thats about it.

Funny how you can say "Orlando is in good position to do some things" but the Knicks can do nothing unless someone wants to give up millions to play for the MLE.

Our chances are very slim, but the Isia factor is still in our favor. I am confident that if the opportunity presents Isia will pull the trigger.

I think there are a lot of good deals out there for us. I just dont know what they are. I do know $$ deals are made every year, and the only reason we werent in on them was Layden was so stupid. Scott would rather offer Brad Miller the MLE than put together a sign and trade. Jamison is another guy that was moved for very little.

I think if Isiah is willing to add $$$ (Dolan has said he can) and or bite the bullet and buyout a contract we could see a big deal happen.

Who knows... I do know there's a lot of options out there, there always is, I just dont know what they are.

Orlando is a club that is in good position for many reasons.
#1 they have 2 EXTREMELY valuable assets in Mcgrady and what looks like pick 1-2
#2 they have the room to sign a full MLE and an LLE if needed. For them to increase revenues--they need to win. They will be a prime time player in the MLE market because they offer perhaps the best location to live.
#3 They have Howard and Gooden who are both valuable. One has to go and I think that the decisions that are made with Mcgrady and the pick which will come first will deteremine what course of action happens with these guys.
#4 the unkown of Grant Hill. Either he will play or he comes off the cap for next year if he cant which could put them in the market for a top tier contract.

There is a great deal of leeway here for them to dramatically improve.

I think they can walk away with two good vets -likely OK4 and some solid role players that they didnt have this year.
If they go in a different direction from Tmac they are going to get a package of something like randolph miles and a pick---i would go that way myself:>) but there is a great deal of things they can do--i think they are in great position to improve drastically.

I think the real value lies in TMac and what they can get for him. If teams think that he is healthy and can be a top tier all-start (which I think many still do) they should be acle to get alot of young guys and start to rebuild. Yes he has a bad back, and yes he couldn't stop a 19 game losing streak but I think teams still crave a guy like him.

there's an equally great leeway for them to hit the cellar for a 4-5 year stretch. Every team has some good options to improve of a variety of different reasons. Whether they do or not depends on if management makes the right decisions.

Do the Magic even have a coach? Why is Grant Hill an "x-factor" for the Magic with his 3 surguries and 4 metal screws in his ankle, but Houston is shot for us? If Hill plays a month next year, then is forced to retire the Magic have to wait an entire extra year before he comes off the cap. At least the Knicks make money.. the Magic are in the red.

But whatever... my point was you seem to have very creative ways to improve teams but the Knicks always have 0.1% chance to improve and we will have the same roster for 3 years.

we ponied up asset after asset and took on 140mm in salary. you could consider we gave up 4 first round picks in lampe vujonic and 2 first rounders and next years number 2+ we took on all that cash, turned our roster over 9 players, we have 13 locked contracts and a 100mm $ payroll. we did more transactions than teams do in 5 years last year. isiah brought in his players spent considerable money and gave up all the young assets. weve done our share of moves. i dont know what else they are going to do. if they are as good as some claim why not keep the team they have draft a second rounder and improve from within so they garner chemsitry? fans who think we are going to do another overhaul and spend spend spend are wrong. we did most of our trading.

excellent post fishmike, I mean that was a complete undressing with that post.... It is funny how everyone who doesn't like isaih Thomas is even willing to take a team like the magic and say they have a good future, yet we have none..LOL...

Briggs: As much as you wish them to be, neither lampe or Milos are first round picks, and until they play and prove they are first round talent, all they are are second round players, so your tired argument of the knicks gave up all the young assets is just assinine, the knick have a lottery pick in sweetney who is playing and proving he is worth that pick is on the bench as well as frankie another first round pick. Yet you tout Howard and gooden as good trading pieces when we have KT, othella, Frankie and Naz, yet we have no trading pieces? come on man!! come on...

Next you also act as if we don't have a MLE to use.. whats up with that? and you are telling me free agents are going to go running to orlando to lose but it is OK as long as they are in Florida?? LOL.. come on Briggs!!!!

And then you say grant Hill can be a valuable trading piece with his expiring deal, well I ask you, what about penny? again Briggs you are making no sense..

dont know Gooden and Howard as nice trade assets. They were integral parts of the worst frontcourt in the NBA last year, every team needs some of that.

But Briggs did mention another good point about improving from within. Why cant we do this? I'm not talking about Tim Thomas suddenly becoming a 25 point scorer. But I am talking about Sweetney becoming a force in the post (as Briggs himself predicted). I'm talking about Frank Williams earning a bigger role. So what if Marbury plays 40 minutes a night. Frank proved he's a good defender, a great ball handler and a guy that can create and defend bigger players. Hmmm.. that sounds like some ok things to work with.

There are so many things that can go right that will improve our team.. there is no reason to dwell on what wont. I think everything that could have gone wrong at the end of last year did. No Houston, Kurt and his pinky stunk, Frank's mom died after we hit the IR with a pulled groin. Sweetney was ignored until Isiah traded Spoon and brought in Aguire to work with him. No Tim Thomas for the playoffs. Deke was hurt late in the season when we could have actually used him. The list goes on...

When I talk about good luck I'm not talking about signing Kobe with the MLE, I'm talking about guys staying healthy and playing well together after a certain period of time... much like the Heat were able to do a 50 game adjustment period. (please refrain from a long drawn out comparison of how great the Heat are... PLEASE)

I think we have some good players--- I do wonder how well they fit in together. The Knicks don't play well as a team on offense or defense. There rarely was any continuity; perhaps this is as a result of the many moves IT made, or perhaps we just don't have very versatile players.

Our transition defense is arguably the worst in the league... and our half-court defense is quite poor as well.

Do we have the players necessary to play either type of D well? Maybe it's a matter of getting 1 heady wing defender on the floor to direct traffic defensively the way LJ used to. We need some players who can take a charge. I'd say that it'd be a rare event to see Tim Thomas or Stephon Marbury take a charge-- those guys are all about self preservation.

Given our budget, we have limited options for improving our team. We could probably attempt to acquire either a good offensive player (Antoine Walker) who could pass and score with no D, or we can choose to spend our money on someone who'll contribute toughness on the defensive end.

That being said... on the cheap end, I think the Knicks could use a pure shooter to help spread the floor-- someone who has 3pt range. Shandon Anderson (a below avg shooter) was thrust into that role--- and with these open misses, we lost out on a couple of points every game...

A high percentage 3pt shooter who plays defense (Bruce Bowen-type) would be fantastic. A Ginobili-type player would be a fantastic fit for us.

good post fish. I agree, with the emergence of both frankie and sweetney, boy very young players the knicks can be a much improved team in that aspect, we have talent, it will take some work and time being together but we can improve from within..

Yea I would like to see DeMarr resigned. If he can improve his defensive game he can be a very valuable asset to this team.

We have so many offensive-oriented players... we have players who can't do anything if they DON'T have the rock (DerMarr). Maybe if he watches a lot of tape of Kerry Kittles...
