I think that, even if we all have different stories about when we became fans, the common denominator has to be a connection to the team that makes you love it and follow it no matter what.
I loved the 90s and early 00s Knicks because of their grit, resiliency and their performance even if they somehow where always the underdogs. They were disciplined, worked like a team and gave their all on defense. The description has worn off, but this year, to me, feels a whole level darker and more embarrassing than any of the last losing seaaons we've had. In those years, I still had hope that a trade or a firing would kickstart my team going to the right direction.
But wow...
If knowledge is power, Ive had too much of that from this organization. Every scandal, every turmoil, every mistaken decision has completely disconnected me from this team. Not only is the product on the floor as bad as possible with the most talent we've had in a losing on, but the decisions made by the coach, GM and owner are so disgusting.
I love New York, MSG and the orange and blue. I can't root for the Nets. I can see a game and chose to root for a team but it never somes close to my passion for the Knicks. Yet, I sincerely and truly hate this year's version along with everyone in the organization. They dont represent me nor connect with me one bit. So, while Im still a fan, I hate todays team and have no real hope for a better future. I find no fun in criticizing the organization continuously. I just want to connect again with the team I loved, but this situation is damaged right now.
That is why I asked. I dont hold myself high in hardcore fandom nor wanted this to be about how real of a fan you are. I think if you are here, you are. Nice to know how some of you are holding out on the ultimate wxample of embarrassing seasons by this team. But I guess some here are right: once a fan, always a fan, no matter if you no longer connect with the team and have no hope for the future, probably the main ingredients of being a fan.
