Why NY Knicks Will Win 2014 Atlantic Division Title

The New York Knicks took a big leap in the right direction last season.

NY won over 50 games, reached the Eastern Conference semifinals, allowed Carmelo Anthony to flourish as the league’s top scorer and set the foundation for the future of the franchise.

But the most important accomplishment in Mike Woodson’s first full season as head coach was the fact that New York captured the Atlantic Division title for the first time since 1993.

And in 2014, the Knicks are going to do it again.

It won't be easy for New York—this division is no joke.

Hi-res-7511848_crop_exactUSA TODAY Sports

The Brooklyn Nets, NY's top rival, have a vastly improved roster after trading for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. However, a lot of hype is being put on two guys who are a combined 72 years old and are no longer in the prime of their careers.

Plus, new head coach Jason Kidd is completely unproven from the sidelines and is at the helm of a roster with some alpha dogs (Deron Williams, KG and Pierce) who could potentially butt heads.

The Boston Celtics won’t be a pushover, as Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green are still on the roster. But after unloading their second and third best players to BKN for a package of role-specific guys, they won’t have enough firepower to compete with the league’s upper-tier teams.

The Toronto Raptors have a chance to be decent—Rudy Gay is a quality scorer, and Jonas Valanciunas might be an emerging star—but they're still far from winning the division.

The Philadelphia 76ers are the lone Atlantic squad that won’t pose real competition for most of the teams in the league. The only thing that the Sixers can hope to win is the 2014 NBA Draft Lottery and consequently snagging Andrew Wiggins.

In the end, the Atlantic throne will be decided by the squads in the Big Apple. And despite Brooklyn's blockbuster trade and nice offseason, those guys from Manhattan still have the better team and will repeat as division champs in 2014.

Who Will Stop Melo?

Carmelo Anthony is the best player in the division, and one of the best in the entire NBA.

Last season, Melo won the scoring crown with 28.7 points per game and also chipped in 6.9 boards while spending a lot of time on the block.

In 2014, Anthony will be used more frequently where he thrives—in isolation.

New York’s power forward tandem of Amar’e Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani will pull opposing big men down below the block and even out to the three-point line, giving Anthony room to work defenders one-on-one.

As J.R. Smith tweeted, anything less than a championship is a "waste" for New York in 2014. And in addition to chasing his first title, Anthony will have the ability to opt out of his contract with the Knicks next summer—so extra money (whether he re-signs or goes elsewhere) is an added incentive.

Melo is an elite player in his prime who’s playing for another huge contract. He’ll be the driving force in the Knicks’ push for another division crown.

Revamped Roster

New York’s roster last season was the oldest in the history of the NBA, as documented by Royce Young of CBS Sports.

After coming into opening night with an average age of nearly 32 years old, the Knicks simply fell victim to nagging injuries to almost every player at one time or another.

Hi-res-6959404_crop_exactKim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

With the 2014 roster as it currently stands, the Knicks have a team age of 28.2—a tremendous drop-off of about four years from last season (via Rotoworld). Woodson will no longer be forced to put so much emphasis on minute restrictions and can focus more on individual game-planning.

Marcus Camby, Rasheed Wallace and Kidd—all of whom are no longer with NY—had an average age of 38.3 years old at the beginning of last season (via Basketball Reference). Although each member of that trio really contributed at some points in 2013, injuries and declined athleticism limited their effectiveness.

Metta World Peace, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bargnani—New York’s top offseason additions—combine for an average of 27.3 years of age. In addition, youngsters C.J. Leslie and Jeremy Tyler are both 22 years old and are going to have the chance at some minutes next season.

The 2014 Knicks have revamped their roster with young talent that will not only contribute more than the elder statesmen of a year ago, but who will also be able to keep themselves on the court.

Superior Coaching

Yes, the Nets have gotten better—Garnett, Pierce and Jason Terry are warriors who are hungry for one last run at a championship. But can a completely inexperienced coach lead them to that title?

Kidd is an all-time great point guard, but he’s taking over a big-time coaching role without getting his feet wet on the sidelines.

Although he’s earned the respect of the entire NBA on the court, Kidd is going to have to deal with a veteran roster whose window of opportunity will most likely close after the next two years.

That's a ton of pressure on a first-year head coach, and it’s unclear whether or not Kidd will be able to live up to it.

Hi-res-158410054_crop_exactElsa/Getty Images

Woodson coached Kidd in 2013, but will go against him on the sidelines next season.

Woodson, heading into his ninth season as a head coach, received six votes for the 2013 Coach of the Year award. He led the oldest team in the history of the league to 54 wins and a division title, turned Smith into the NBA Sixth Man of the Year and got his two best players (Melo and J.R.) to give a consistent defensive effort.

The Knicks have the best player and best coach in the division (now that Doc Rivers is gone), as well as a younger and re-energized roster.

After combining all three of those factors, the result will be a Knicks team that's going to finish atop the Atlantic Division for the second year in a row.

Bleacher Report has been getting a little better lately. Still not my favorite place to read good insights, I think their articles tend to be very light weight. This article is pretty indicative of that style of writing which isn't much more informative than a typical Forum post on the web. I do believe the Knicks will win the Atlantic again tho it's going to be tough. The East in general is going to be really tough. I think the Knicks will win because we have the best talent in it's prime. Brooklyn has the best NAME talent, but they aren't in their primes.

The Knicks can go hard with the bulk of their core players, whereas the Nets can't go as hard due to limits on minutes. As the article mentions Melo is still the best player in the division. Barring some health issue Melo gives the Knicks the edge.
Overall the Knicks and Nets have very similar talent, but it's that extra boost the Knicks have in terms of the vitality of their core players that I think will win out.

There is only one team in the atlantic other than the Knicks that will make the playoffs....the Nets aren't gonna go full steam in the regular season due to their older core, and it makes sense for them to give their guys proper rest and then release them for the playoff run.

The division is ours.

That article is poorly written though.

Bleacherreport's Swagger section barely has any hoons on it anymore... Was the best part of the site.

Can't wait for the Somberistas to swarm down on this thread and tear it to shreds.

1) unsustainable
2) fool's gold
3) meaningless
4) gilds mediocrity
5) deflects attention from the debilitating chipless cancer that is Melo"

Reasons are not compelling enough other than to say Nets have question marks.

While the hype about Garnett and Pierce is robust, what is lost is the fact they are really in BKN to support the existing core. Bropez is a top 5 center at some level, Deron if healty and properly coached was a top 3 pg just a few years a go, and is still young, and Joe Johnson while just 31 is a very clutch shooter. What the Boston players do is enhance whats there by lessoning the load and wear and tear. Add Teletubbie, Livingston, Anderson, and especially Blatch you have a very deep team.

I don't think kidd is a difference maker but you have enough assitants on the bench to round him out. A guy who played in 1391 games and 158 playoff games at the PG does have some unique "instincts" many coaches won't have. Losing in two finals teaches you a lot. You learn by losing playoff series and the finals is a big learning experience! Winning one put it together for him.

Personally I see the Nets just a notch above the knicks down the stretch but the knicks I think can win win the atlantic if the Nets stumble at the gate. Knicks I read won't put he regular season as much a priority as last year as they want to go further in the playoffs.

This kind of confirms that last season was c.ockblock of the nets more than anything as Dolan is seething the nets are in BKN!

That said I have read some early predictions having the nets 4th and Knicks fifth is pretty easy to see. Easliy can flip both around as the knicks are capable of winning 57 games if the nets stumble.

Really don't matter what the Nets do as long as knicks take care of their business. If Bargs can return to form and Stat give us 70 games with 20 min off the bench, and im talking quality minutes This team will do some damage.

This season will be measured by what they do in the playoffs than previous.

Personally I'd love to see both teams be the beasts of the East and meet in the ECF's with knicks going to finals!!!!!

Epic games of importance is how rivalry's are made, not geographic proximity!

yes the knicks best shot at getting out of the first round is to claim the 3rd seed in the conference which means they must win the division. they will not want to be a 4th or even 5th seed since the competition in the east will be coming down to heat bulls indiana brooklyn and us. best that they face a 6th seed since the dropoff is comparatively dramatic starting with the 6th seed.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

It is Bleacher Report but nice to see some positive press.

Especially rare to see anything positive written about Bargs.

The first quote is dead on. If he wanted to spin more he could have said 73 at the start of the season.

I think we have a great shot and the article has some great points such as we do have the best coach and player in the division. that usually equates to the division crown. however, it took us 6 games to take care of boston without rondo and those primary players are on the nets with dwill and lopez! it will be hard. the odds are against us talent and willpower wise.

Thing is that the Knicks are in fact deeper, younger and more talented than last year. It's hard for the media and some fans to accept this but it's true. Brewer and White were on this teams last year! Brewer couldn't sustain and White never "stain'd" at all. We had Prigs trying to get adjusted. Shump trying to get his legs back. There were a lot of little issues like that and still we were better than the Nets. Our AARP crew broke down and became a non factor at the end.

It's going to be interesting to see how the Nets start the year. I'm sure they'll destroy the weaker teams on shear star talent alone, but we don't know about stamina and chemistry. Who takes the last shot in big situations? How will they balance the scoring and minutes? What will the defense be like. Lots of questions for the Nets.

No one was referring to Kidd Wallace Camby and prigs as AARP squad early in the year. Common thought was that their veteran presence would be huge in the playoffs unfortunately they never made it there fresh and healthy. KG and Pierce did and almost beat us WITHOUT Rondo. They won't be counted on as heavily as they were with Boston. Brooklyn has a young core in place. We got a mediocre core and Amare. We don't have KG AND Pierce's championship pedigree

Oh wait we have Tyson Mr. No Show in the playoffs

Be careful. cuz the old adage is that athletes often get old all of a sudden and not slowly. Players can look fine and then just one day they don't have it. That's what happened to Kidd for sure. Pierce already showed in the playoffs that he had finally reached his limit. Who knows if maybe KG might hit that wall this year. Its a long way from training camp to the ECF's.

What's so young and so core about the Nets? You ain't winning Jack SHHH with D Will and Lopez. JJ is old already and you can't say for sure what you'll get out of PP, KG and Jet. Don't go counting them as definite positives at playoff time. The Knicks are stronger than they were last year. They may not be perfect but the Knicks are going to be really good.

KG maybe made it but Pierce didn't. Also, last season they were actually going nowhere with Rondo.

losing rondo put too much of a burden on pierce to run the offense and he did look exhausted no doubt. but if properly utilized pierce is the ideal player to extend his career because he has an old man's game. kidd and pierce and garnett probably are on the same page that they don't want to play more than 24-28 minutes a game. that's why picking up kirilenko was so important for them. nets are deep and their collective bbiq just shot up with the acquisition of pierce and garnett. kirilenko is pretty savvy too. and this kid teletovic has a pretty good ceiling, come to think of it.

brooklyn has a very intriguing team but much relies on pierce and garnett's health. if they remain healthy i predict the nets will be the better team this coming season than the knicks.

the main issue with the knicks, outside of questionable defense, remains chemistry and a balanced offense. they just don't have the components to make it work and you can't use hopefulness as a substitute for a pragmatic view.

that's just my take for what it's worth... i may be wrong but i doubt it.

Dwill Lopez and Johnson are very good. They won 49 games we won 54. We weren't that much better. Nyets lacked leadership and toughness. They have that now in KG AND Pierce. Those guys are not coming out of retirement like Wallace and injury prone like Camby and 40 like Kidd. They are in their mid 30s and minutes will be kept under 30 unlike last yr.
