The idea of a Jennings, Ellis, and Smith backcourt sounds like a disaster to me, 3 guys who need the ball in their hands that are all known chuckers, there will be nothing left to go around. None of them are real playmakers. I think the interest in Smith and Copeland must mean they're trying to move Ellis, and want to replace him with our scorers. I could deal with losing JR, but if both these guys go to the bucks it will be irritating every time we play them.

On the front page but I'll link anyway: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/knicks/post/_/id/46096/sources-bucks-want-smith-and-copeland

If they go the best thing would be to work out a sign and trade. Yes, the Bucks can outbid Ny but why over pay when you don't have too. It's not likely but possible especially if they want both. Let the battle of Woody vs. Drew continue.

Monda, Jennings and JR all doing it in Spree's home town just sounds combustable.

Maybe the old sage can lend advice how they can run their lives.

Don't even want JR Smith back; I'd take Cope back but I think he might be out of our price range to keep. If we could execute a sign & trade with Smith or both players for that #15 pick I would be overjoyed beyond words. Don't even know if we can do that or if it's even realistic. Tell ya what, just looking over their team salary over at hoopshype, the Bucks' team payroll for next year: a little over $31M. Well under the cap -- they could absorb salary for both players and not have to send us any in return I believe, right? Thing is Smith might agree to a discounted deal to stay in NY (esp. if they take care of his brother), but to go play anywhere else, you would think he could get more than what the Knicks can pay him. To sign that deal with the Knicks only to get flipped to the Bucks -- I don't know if he would agree to that. Why would he? Smith's agent probably tell the Bucks -- if you want him, pay him reigning 6th man of the year money, we're not taking $5.5M or whatever the Knicks max offer would be -- that's money he would take to stay in NY, not to go play in Milwaukee. Now if Milwaukee agreed to take on Chris Smith like we're supposedly contemplating -- maybe we've got something here. Milwaukee probably likes Smith because they think they could get him for much cheaper than it would take to bring back Monta Ellis who's a FA. There no question Milwaukee would love it if they can get him for that NY discounted price too. That's incentive to try to work with the Knicks on a deal you would think...JJ Redick's also a FA btw, so is Mike Dunleavy -- they're thin at the 2 and outside shooting looks to be a weakness all of a sudden -- there's a fit there with JR. Thing is how to make it work where Milwaukee's happy and we get proper compensation....Looking at it objectively, is JR Smith worth the 15th pick in this draft? I dunno -- maybe he is...Hard to gauge -- he had a decent regular season followed up by a total stinker in the postseason....If I'm Grunwald I push as hard as I can for that deal but if I'm Milwaukee, I don't think it's worth it.

What's everyone's take on this? Is there anything here? Can we even make such a deal?

The knicks can't do sign and trades cuz were over the cap....jr smith could sign an offer sheet with money way more than we expected and we'd have to turn our heads like we did Lin. That would suck, unless grunwald could make a trade to loosen up the roster with the contracts we already have

They just can't receive any S&Ts right now. They can send players in a S&T. The only reason why JR would do a S&T would be the other teams talk to the knicks before they offer JR to keep his price down.

We can give him a small raise this year then take care of him next year.

that is one reason for him to have opted out.

I'd pull his brother off the court even during a summer league game if he signs anywhere else.

I don't think he is going anywhere. Seems like the Bucks would do well to resign Reddick?

I'd hate to think where our season would have been without JR last year. He was deputy dog.

I was under the impression they couldn't sign and Reade at all. Having Smiths bird rights us to retain him. I don't think you are allowed to flip him in a sign and trade.

If you're right then i want Jennings back for Smith

If you were JR Smith, would you want to go to Milwaukee, Wisconsin?!
Just sayin'.

I don't know how anybody voluntarily goes there. Or Minnesota for that matter.

JR Smith might be a fool but he does defend and he can fill it up. Cant put it past Milwaukee to offer JR Smith close to what they were going to offer Eliis and that's 3 years 36.

What if that does happen? Knicks will not match that especially when they are looking to low ball him at 5 mull a year.

Knicks can only offer 5 million. We are over the cap and dont have JR Smith's full bird rights.

Good! JR Smith can be replaced.. Ricky Ledo is the same guy, same skill set, probably better upside. I'd draft em.. let JR Walk... and stay away from the luxury tax. Knicks need to stop over paying for marginal talent IMO.

OK - so technically we CAN send him, just instead of getting a package of players back worth 5-someting-million (whatever the max is we can start Smith off at), we could get that pick back at 15 which has no salary amount attached to it, right?

Man, if this is possible, I pursue this deal like a madman if I'm Gunwald. I don't even want Smith back, talking about just letting him walk. Imagine if we could flip him for the 15th pick? If the rules say we can't do it, then that's that. But if, being over the cap, we're allowed to get a pick(s) back, then I can see something here...The Bucks reportedly want him and there's no question they want him at a reduced rate (the Knicks' max offer) rather than spending another 2-3M getting him on the open market. JR probably wants no part of going there but picture this -- suppose we really do let him walk, Milwaukee doesn't want him at the open market price and there are no other suitors? Where's he going then, back to China? Where would you rather go -- Milwaukee or back to China? He couldn't wait to leave China man -- he supposedly pulled out of his deal early to come to the Knicks and his Chinese team sued him for breaching his contract I thought, no? Whatever happened with that?? Anyway, then suppose Milwaukee agrees to take on Smith's brother, Chris, with a guaranteed deal? How does JR turn that down?? I can see something here a little bit...

Tell ya all what -- I might even sweeten it up for Milwaukee -- Smith AND pick 24 for picks 15 and 43. I'd secure Isaiah Canaan at 15, then try to get a quick feel whether or not Mike Muscala or Jamelle Hagins would be there at 43. If either is (Hagins more likely), it's a homerun draft. Quality PG and big man for a guy I'd just assume let walk anyway. Or, say we really want our cake and eat it too and want Muscala but don't want to leave it up to chance that he'll be there at 43, I'd then try to flip 43 + cash (if we have any to use, maybe future cash considerations if that's allowed--it is in other sports), the Ronnie Brewer trade exception, a future 2--whatever we can do--to move up as high as I could into the 30s and take Muscala there. JR Smith's replacable; so is Chris Copeland...A Canaan/Muscala draft would be unreal.

My dream draft as of right now would be -- Isaiah Canaan, Mike Muscala (or Jamelle Hagins), then try to make a small deal with whatever leftover resources for a pick in the 55-60 range and secure Tyler Brown or Dwayne Davis there. Quality PG, quality big and we steal an intriguing/underrated 2G prospect late, Manu Ginobli style....I'd love to see Grunwald get as greedy as he possibly could tonight!

To all the CBA gurus out there -- is any of this possible?

Knicks definitely have his early bird rights....it would be hard to walk away from a 8-12 million from a desperate team. There's also the poison pill deals we know so well.

The knicks really need to spread out there options and actively research plan a-z

Not the deal I want -- I want no part of either guy. Ellis is a FA anyway...Another reason why JR Smith is a fit for Milwaukee btw -- Ellis, JJ Redick and Mike Dunleavy are all FAs. If none of those guys are retained, there's a huge hole on that club at the 2/perimeter shooting. The Bucks obviously feel JR Smith is comparable value to Monta Ellis that they can get for far less than what it would take to resign Ellis or Ellis AND Redick (esp. if they can get Smith at that reduced Knicks S&T price). It makes sense for them to hash out a S&T for Smith with us, along with Copeland if we can find a way to use Cope as a sweetener here too.

Wrote something similar in another post.. assuming a s&t is possible, by all accounts.. I think we can't take on additional traded salary because we are exceeding the cap smh.. BUT if it were within league rules, I'd make such a move. #15 for Copeland and JR. Ideally, i'd select Olynyk @ 15 and replace JR @24 W/ Ledo. I also like adding 24 for 15 (Still taking Kelly Olynyk) and 43... But I'd draft Myck Kabongo- Texas or Ray McCallum from Detroit over Isiah Canaan.

We'd have a more balanced offense, we'd be slower defensively but still sound in the front court. Olynyk would play well off of Chandler and Melo. Kabongo would be a steady playmaker for NYK! McCallum might be Russell Westbrook light.. don't sleep.

Who's signing him for that amount of money, really? He's not getting that, not after his playoff debacle (remember this guy's played poorly in the playoffs two years in a row now -- he wasn't great last year as well)....I heard the Spurs as a possibility because they're under the cap --- there's no way in hell an organization like that takes on a crazy gunslinger like this guy, I don't care how far under the cap they are. He's a terrible fit there and would drive Pop nuts. I don't think there are a lot of suitors for this guy man, just a feeling I have....I felt like that last year too. If there were last offseason, we would've heard about it, just like we're hearing Milwaukee has interest now. We didn't hear any interest for JR last offseason, despite what he and his agent had to say. Not a peep...Now he puts up a decent year with the 18 ppg and wins the 6th man of the year award -- his price on the open market probably tripled. But who's gonna want this guy for 8.5-9M a pop, honestly? Nobody's giving him that - I'd be shocked. That's why I really feel like there's something here with this Milwaukee thing. If things get ironed out properly, Milwaukee could get him at a reduced rate.

We could do that too. Not bad at all. At 43 this kid Kabongo makes sense (think I like McCallum there more though, maybe even Pierre Jackson even with him being so tiny). And Olynyk and Ledo feel like proper value at 15 & 24...To get this done though -- if we had to include #24 to hopefully get back #43, I would. It might be more realistic and give Milwaukee further incentive to get it done...It would mean no Ledo at 24 though...But I'm with ya, Jay. I'd pursue this deal hard...I've been talking for weeks about letting JR Smith just walk right outta town...I mean if there's a chance we could flip him for the 15th pick in this draft somehow -- wow, what a homerun that would be.

Bucks VERY interested in Smith and Copeland
