http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/9415256/los-angeles-clippers-agree-principle-doc-rivers-deal-sources

After days of wrangling, negotiating and posturing, the Los Angeles Clippers have agreed in principle to a deal with the Celtics for Glenn "Doc" Rivers, pending league approval, according to sources.

Sources confirmed on Sunday that the Clippers will sign Rivers to a three-year, $21 million contract. They will send a first-round pick as compensation for the Boston Celtics, who have agreed to release the coach from the three years, $21 million he has remaining on his deal with the club.

Contrary to previous reports, according to league and team sources, the Celtics have been complicit all along in assisting Rivers make the switch from Boston to Los Angeles.

Although Danny Ainge, the Celtics' director of basketball operations, was initially irked that Rivers was lukewarm about returning to Boston, where a rebuilding process will soon be underway, team sources said he recognized the best way to accumulate first-round draft picks, which he covets, would be to relinquish his two most valued assets -- Rivers and Kevin Garnett. Since then, he and Rivers have been working side by side to secure a deal that is best for both parties, sources said.

Team sources confirmed Ainge has also been trying to secure a first-round pick for veteran Paul Pierce, who can be bought out by June 30 for $5 million. The Celtics have been unsuccessful thus far, leaving open the possibility they keep Pierce and his $15.3 million contract on their books, and attempt to deal him again at the trade deadline next winter, when teams historically look for veteran help and are willing to overpay.

More on the Clippers

Celtics ownership, which blanched at the thought of paying a coach $7 million a season for a team that will not be in contention for a division title, never mind an NBA title, is also on board with Rivers' departure, sources said.

League and teams sources also confirmed that for now, any deal involving Garnett and the Clippers is on hold in light of commissioner David Stern's objections to the appearance that the KG deal (for DeAndre Jordan) and Rivers were related.

Team sources also indicated that Rivers is frustrated with the perception that he was the driving force behind the push to go to the Clippers, or that he was unwilling to coach the Celtics if Pierce and Garnett were not going to be on the roster.

"Doc never said any such thing," a source close to the coach said. "He just wasn't sure if he could rev himself up for years of rebuilding. He never issued any ultimatums about anyone."

The Celtics have a news conference scheduled for noon on Monday, where, sources said, Rivers is expected to explain his decision to leave Boston after nine seasons.

Yahoo! Sports and The Boston Globe earlier reported the teams renewed talks after hitting an impasse on Friday.

Dam I bet they trading the 25th pick this year.

25th pick is worth keeping Chris Paul I suppose.

Lets see if Chris Paul gets hated on for costing the Clippers an asset.

Chris doesn't get involved in those kind of decisions.

Holy **** it was an unprotected 2015 first round pick they sent.

I can see this deal turning out badly if anyone gets injured that year.

it's very possible too if they give up some more players and picks for Garnett & Pierce. Those two are on their last legs and maybe done after next year.

A coach can get you a first round pick unprotected. NBA is a big joke.

Clippers got Doc to keep Chris Paul...solid move.

A pic in a draft that hasn't been mocked yet is certainly not worth losing Chris Paul over.

I knew Clips would get the first part out of the way...

The NBA is gonna have a hard time trying to C-block a trade sending K.G. to Clippers. It was already discussed last year separate of any Doc discussion.

So here's what I see. I see K.G. being involved in a trade where he gets released and he signs with the Clippers or he's later spun off there from a 3 teamer.

Stern and the NBA look like complete fools doing this.

And if this is such an eye sore for Stern then he should C-Block Vinny being hired by the Celtics as his name was thrown into the mix when discussions took place. I bet he won't

Oh and The Celtics can still buy out Pierce so he can land in L.A.....lol @ Stern.

As I said Clippers were on the CP3 clock...NUFF CED!

The Buccaneers traded two 1st rounders and two 2nd rounders to the Raiders for Jon Gruden.

Yeah but Doc wasn't going back to Boston once this started. This was about CP3. Celts got out of 21 mil owed to Doc and got a first round pick.

Definitely wrong. Boston's blowing it up and going to rebuild so they'll suck for awhile.

They have one of the best PGs in the game and 100% healthy Jeff Green and probably are not done yet w/ trades, FA and stock piling picks. I don't think they'll be contenders next year, like they would've if they stuck w/ it, but I definitely don't think they're gonna suck.

In fact, I could see them still making the playoffs next year.

Doc Rivers' compensation agreement states that Celtics and Clippers can't exchange players until the end of the '13-'14 season, source says.

For all the posters here that credit Woody's achievements this year at

54 wins
Anthony's first scoring title
6th man of the year in JR Smith
development of Iman and Copeland

do you think ANY team would offer a pick for Woody's services when his contract is about half of River's?
I personally would have loved Brian Shaw as a highly payed assistant at 4m per year with a promise that he would take over as head coach in a year or 2
With the success of coaches of George Karl, Mark Jackson, Lion Hollins, Doc Rivers, Vinny Del Negro, PJ, some of them were still let go of their duties

We need changes and someone to take blame for the poor performance vs The Pacer's
Pacer's were the better team but we were not prepared in any way, we were horrible in many ways

we had horrible adjustments and/or lack of
horribile rotations and lineups
horrible BALL movement/game plan of OFF and DEF
unable/unwilling to push the ball against a set up Pacer's DEF
Playing Amare over Copeland when he did not play for over 3months and his DEF is worse than Copeland while Copeland has produced EVERY chance he had

We were not able to get the ball in the paint when Hibbert was the extra help defender and their tough 1v1 DEF to begin with
Allowing Melo and JR to go Iso while shooting 30% in multiple games while

Going all Vets was what Woody wanted and we had a lack of speed/athleticism/ 1v1 DEFenders,
I think we should look to acquire as much CHEAP talent in development that we COULD KEEP past 2015
Problem is, Woody does not give the opportunity and BUILD confidence/develop players like Poppavich/Spur's does
We need to add development coaches and the proper equipment if we can grab multiple players with the potential and the work ethic of Iman Shumpert
Add a system that does not rely on one or 2 players to take 30-40 shots, with more ball movement and TEAM EMPHASIS

He will favor "names" players that do not work and stick with it NO MATTER how bad they play
There is no accountability as he once preached, (only fake barks at Novak/Copeland) along with running plays when our most talented players are also our lowest BB IQ

We have no Core or Identity and offering 1 year deals if we continue to find gems/players that produce but cannot keep do to the new CBA does not help
I really hope Chandler can be traded for a trade exemption, along with Portland's 2nd round picks in a DEEP draft for rotation players, in picks 39,40,45, and possibly draft rights for Pap back
