http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/9378352/brooklyn-nets-verge-naming-jason-kidd-coach-source

The Brooklyn Nets, after completing a five-hour interview with Brian Shaw, are on the verge of hiring Jason Kidd as their next coach, according to sources close to the process.

Sources told ESPN.com that, although Shaw has been targeted by the Nets for some time and made a strong presentation Wednesday, Kidd has convinced Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and his advisers that he is ready to jump directly into the lead seat on an NBA bench despite the fact that he has no prior coaching experience.

One source briefed on discussions went so far as telling ESPN.com on Wednesday: "The job is Jason's."

Said another: "I would be stunned if Jason did not get it."

ESPN.com reported Monday that Kidd, in a sitdown Monday with Nets general manager Billy King, sold Brooklyn on the idea that the presence of former Nets and Detroit Pistons head coach Lawrence Frank can provide him with a lead assistant who can help Kidd compensate for his own lack of head-coaching experience.

One of the main draws to Kidd is the impact he has on Deron Williams. Kidd and Williams are close friends, with Kidd somewhat in the big brother role. The Nets believe that if Williams is engaged and playing his best, many of their problems are solved and the Nets are a far better team. With Kidd at the helm, they believe Williams would play at his optimum level.

The Nets did not retain P.J. Carlesimo despite the fact he went 35-19 after taking over for Avery Johnson last season. The Nets were beaten by the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs.

Information from ESPN's Stephen A. Smith, Chris Broussard, Mike Mazzeo and Ramona Shelburne was used in this report.

Happy for Kidd. Off the court discretions aside, a true basketball genius on the court, so this was the natural progression.

Although he won a chip with Dallas, he had his best years in a Nets uni.

Wish the Hall of Famer a great career as a head coach, just hope he bombs everytime against us!

his relationship with deron williams (one of his best friends) probably had a lot to do with it, but I think the NETS and billy king are a are a complete joke..

No disrespect to kidd, but this is a bad decision

Wow, no resume, and he gets the top job. I think he will do well, but I have no reason for that. Just always considered JKidd to have great basketball acumen.

Congratulations to Kidd. I feel a bit bad for Shaw. Kidd and Shaw were high school rivals and Jason always seemed to get the better of him. Kidd definitely was a winner and a leader on the floor. It will be interesting to see if he can translate that to being a winner as a coach. I think it is a smart move on his part to bring in Lawerence Frank.

Wonder if Kidd would have gotten the job if he was on a team other than the Knicks this season. Prokhorov does have a thing for going after ex Knicks.
Knicksfan: Hypocrite league that fines players after the game for flopping but in the game and with obvious flopping they call the fouls.

Shaw wants the Clippers gig...I just fill Kidd had this plan in the works for a while and now he goes to a division rival to stop us from accomplishing the ultimate goal.

Lawrence Frank will be Kidd's top assistant. Kidd also probably agreed to sign a dirt cheap coaching contract.

He's also 40 years old, washed up, terrified to shoot the ball, and ended his career not scoring a single point in 10 straight games. Jordan retiring in '93 after winning his 3rd title was abrupt not this.

Seriously doubt whether Kidd can do this, especially given the short leash the Nyets have for coaches.

Well when we play the Nets they will know our plays better than Woodson does, but I guess that's only 4 games a year .

Why shouldn't Kidd be able to be a successful Coach? As long as he surrounds himself with good experienced assistants, I don't see why not. Being a Head Coach is more about having a vision and being able to inspire and lead men. You don't have to know everything to be successful.

Desperate move by the GM...This is his last hurrah...He brought in some bad contracts and unmotivated guys...He now needs some sizzle to reignite the franchise...Big name recognition, a guy with zero head coaching experience and a terrible assistant with a vet ball club...How does Lawrence Frank continue to get jobs in the NBA????..

The funny thing is that Kidd can suit up and play for the Nyets as a player coach. He cut his financial ties to us when he retired and didn't take any money for next 2 years where he was originally under contract. I'd put up money that he does play at some point next season.

Same with Marc Jackson. These guys have been around the league enough for GMs to know what they are about. They powwow with the GMs, often handled the entire huddle during timeouts and would meet up with them to watch tape and discuss game plans. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt
