The Post has learned point guard Chris Smith, J.R. Smiths brother who injured his knee during Knicks training camp, has fired his agent, Marc Cornstein, and will hire J.R.s rep, CAA superagent Leon Rose, who also handles Carmelo Anthony.

J.R. Smith is expected to opt out of his contract and re-sign with the Knicks in a four-year deal starting at about $5 million because the Knicks own his early-Bird rights rules.

The Knicks could be outbid for J.R. Smith by an under-the-cap team, though its unlikely considering his playoff flop. But having Chris Smith as part of the package has convinced the Sixth Man of the Year he wants to stay. After the Game 6 loss Saturday, the embattled Smith said I want to retire a Knick.

His brother, Chris, who played at Louisville, tweeted yesterday: Will be back next season along with my big brother @TheRealJRSmith.

Oh well for $5mill per, it's not a bad value of a 6th man of the year. One can only hope that this shythead finally matures into a responsible professional...

God, it's too bad Chris Smith sucks donkey balls, we could've used that roster spot.

Maybe JR changes his ways and Chris improves into a NBA caliber backup point guard..Ehh, who the phuck am I kidding...

I wish it wasnt 4 years. Wouldnt mind a 2 year 10 mil deal. We now have 12 million committed into that year 2015-16. Hurting are Chances of putting another max player on this team

Not only does Chris smith suck, but he will also be athletically diminished after his MCL tear last off season...

$5mil per year is a good deal, we can't get another player with his talent level for that price (and even if we could, we wouldn't be able to sign them due to the cba). Just have to accept some nights he'll have it and some nights he won't.

If he keeps playing at the same level, he's tradeable with 2yrs, $5mil per left on his contract.

Yeah that is great value for a guy who can score 20-30 on any given night regardless of the other bonehead stuff. Remember, even high draft picks are making that in their rookie deals.

Afflalo isn't an unreliable headcase. I'd feel more conformable with JR if he wasn't relied upon as much as he is. If he's used as a true role player and not forced into action when he's obviously struggling I'm cool with it. But Woodson loves him.

I don't like that he's coming back.

Getting JR back isn't a bad thing...I think having him as a number two option is...JR would be a good third option but our money is lost on Chandler and Amare...

I hold (a distant) hope that STAT can return as a #2 option. I was definitely impressed with that lowpost game this season.
JR for $5 mil is good value, IMO, especially when you consider we're paying Steve Novak $4 mil a year...

If it doesn't work out, it's still a very moveable contract.

I would think Dolan loves him more, remember anybody with a substance abuse problem he like to embrace them because he himself has been there.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

At $5 million, JR is still a great deal.. If we were using money elsewhere more wisely. The bargain price for JR is completely wasted with Camby, Kidd, Novak, and Stoudemire chewing up huge amounts of cap

I know JR is a really good talent but we also know he is mentally weak. We saw him fall apart (again) in the playoffs.
I guess we can sign him and then trade him for someone who has a head on their shoulders - maybe a younger up and comer, as JR would be valuable to a few teams out there.

After seeing our lack of TEAM play in the playoffs this year (no shock), I really feel we need to design a better team. Can talk about that in another thread though.

There's nothing wrong with $5M for JR our problem is how much we have to rely on him. He was our 2nd best player offensively last season and getting rid of him doesn't fix that. If we're wasting a roster spot on his brother though, that's bull ****. There's literally no evidence of any kind that Chris Smith is an NBA player; if he's taking up a spot on our D-League team that's fine but otherwise I'm not too happy.
Now the joy of my world is in Zion How beautiful if nothing more Than to wait at Zion's door I've never been in love like this before Now let me pray to keep you from The perils that will surely come
