I guess this was yesterday's news also. Kind of interesting when you reflect back on the Gasol trade and how the Lakers have been wanting to trade Pau for 2-3yrs now and his younger brother wins DPOY honors. Don't get me wrong the Lakers won 2 chips with Gasol but does anyone really feel Kobe wasn't going to win another chip post Shaq regardless of trades made? Meanwhile the Grizzlies solidified themselves as not being a perpetual lottery team. I always thought the trade was a balanced trade.

Not sure if I would have picked Gasol as DPOY but I can't frown upon it.

So far ESPN is 3 for 3

Yeah I hear you on that. I said this at the time of the trade, actually; I didn't feel the trade was nearly as lopsided as it was perceived. People just ignored the fact that the Grizz were getting a 7'1" center who could be a top 5 center and instead looked at where he was drafted in the second round.

I am a little surprised that Marc Gasol won, but it's not an unreasonable selection, I agree.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

i was talking to my friends about this yesteday. this was a HORRIBLE pick. I could choose Lebron, Dwight, Noah, Ibaka and even larry sanders before him...i dont even think hes the best player on his team...allen is. I think this is a case of writers (not coaches) voting for the best player on the best team. they didnt pick noah cuz hes hurt recently. gasol doesnt block or alter shots...hes slow off the PNR and hes not a great rebounder.
Knicks should be improved: win about 40 games and maybe sneak into the playoffs. Melo, Rose and even Noah will have some nice moments however this team should be about PORZINGUS. the sooner they make him the primary player, the better

He has enough stats to be in the discussion but stats obviously don't always tell the full story. I may have leaned towards Ibaka myself or Paul George. Defense has much to do about anchoring the scheme to the point it produces wins. Defensive Wins Shares should be considered along with other metrics. Gasol was 2nd in the league in DWS and 6th in the league in overall WS.

My goodness this is a joke. Ben Wallace hair is sticking up a foot in the air if the award has come to this.

Was a strange choice for sure. Tony Allen a much better defender on the same team.

Wierd. I've never looked at Marc Gasol as DPOY type. Strange pick.

Did anyone think Tyson winning last year was a bit odd?

Imagine, a DPOY on a (mostly) MDA coached team? Its not like KNicks really distinguished themselves last year on defense. It was imrproved, perhaps the reason why.

Ibaka? Lebron? even KG!

Im ok with Tyson and Gasol winning. If it were DLee or Amare thats another story!

Should have been Sanders. But whatever - good for Gasol.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Found Larry sanders more offensive but it was a very good show!

To Tyson's credit, last season we were a decent defensive team and Tyson probably WAS our whole defense.

This season you can see our defense is more of a team work but last season it looked like Tyson was everywhere.

Didnt follow the Grizz much to say how deserving Gasol is, though.

Memphis is feared around the league because of their size and rebounding. You have to figure Marc is the biggest reason why. He is certainly deserving

I haven't really watched Memphis this season but Gasol's def stats (def reb, blocks, steals) are slightly down compared to last year. Is his team defense that great?

Same can be said about Tysons stats. Im guessing he impacts their D greatly. His impact supercedes his numbers

Hence why I mentioned Defensive Win Shares. Every season a player wins an award doesn't translate as the player's best season statistically. Besides (PPG/MIN/FGA/REB<-----all predominantly related to increased playing time) J.R. Smith's numbers weren't as good as previous seasons but he won 6th MOY based on other factors I hope.

This is just another reason why individual awards have to be kept in perspective. Some of them really aren't all they're cracked up to be unless you're the player winning them or a fan of the team the player plays for. I'm pretty sure Grizzlies fans are "Walking in Memphis" saying to themselves.....

This was a no brainer...

I figured someone like Lebron (outstanding all-around defender, highlight blocks) or Ibaka (eyepopping block totals, general growth in responsibility as a player - he's from the the Kenyon Martin mold, but better) would be easier choices than Gasol. The Gasol/Randolph frontcourt bullies opponents, and the fact that as a lumbering big man he's able to avoid foul trouble to contribute so much on the whole, well, I guess that's deserving.

Courtesy of Bonn hyping Win Shares(all season and some of last....although I don't feel it's an end all be all statistical metric) you can find it here....

There's a formula in how it's calculated. I don't personally put much stock into formulas and equations(PERs, WS, eFG%, and whatnot) but to take them at face value, they must be compiled with other known data, including eye tests.
