Nice! Thats the one Knick individual award I felt we had in the bag. JR has had a tremendous yr. Every time you felt he was reverting back to the JR chucker of old he got his game back on track by mixing in the penetration. Woodson certainly deserves an immense amount of credit for being the first coach to really get through to JR

He plays starters minutes and finishs the game.

Stupid award really but Im glad he is getting recognition.

I guess we can redundantly argue over his salary, lament we can't pay him, disagree on who would pay him and why we keep him because we can pay him more next year.

But today we can fawn over his award and praise Grunfeld.

Lets hope he keeps the haircut gone for good!

Congrats to JR and hope we can keep him! He was a big part of the season!

I was hoping we could keep him for the early bird max. JR Smith is looking better than Reddick.

Because he plays hard 100% of the time and never gets injured despite throwing his body around. The latter is greatly appcreciated by this fanbase. He also doesnt wilt underbpressure. Like Melo he is not afraid of taking and making a big shot

Stats suggest it had nothing to do with Woody and more so to do with Volume and Smith's natural progression to maturity. He's had better or say far more efficient yrs in Denver. I do feel he was more "timely for us and the stage on which he plays helps tremendously.

it's because of his athleticsm combined with his attacking attitude. He is the most graceful, explosive athlete I've ever had the privelege of watching regularly. He's explosive and graceful and has chitload of bravado. I love it

Hopefully the landscape of free agency has really changed due to the new CBA. Whereas he may have been in line for a 10-12M/year contract in the past, maybe now the best he gets is 7-8M/yr and decides to leave money on the table to stay in NY. That's our only chance of keeping him. And to think, I wished they would have let him go last off season.

Woodson deserves so much credit for this. I think maybe this puts him over the hump for coach of the year.

Reasons to like Mr. Earl Smith(Copyright 2013, AnswerMan LLC) on the Facebook of Knick Life:

1) A real nice homecoming story. I grew up around Lakewood, NJ and people are still talking sheet about JR all these years later. Much more so now, obviously.
2) You just have to love/hate a guy who rides his bike through manhattan with random fans and family at 2am and no arrests, accidents or other backpage fodder as a consequence.
3) Just enough twitter incidents and moped tickets to let you know he's still JR. Without any weapons or weed charges.
4) He just seems genuinely excited and not overly dispassionate when teammates are doing well.
5) He has embraced his role, he's going to the hole.
6) When was the last time you read about a Knicks bench player who was upset about missing one free throw out of 10 in a game?
7) A nice collection of highlights, featuring the Starksian dunks and the H20 killer j's.
8) Don't forget the postgame pics with the little daughter. Appeals to all levels of fan.
9) Just enough occasional technical let's you know he's not going to disappear during games.
10) Official Knicks Mr. Head Coach stamp of approval.

who is to say that the volume and progression to maturity isn't directly related to what Woody has been preaching to him?

and articles suggest that it was Woody who took JR under his wing and has been hands on with him all year. This has been widely written about. Why not just give a coach his due?

Woody deserves some credit but keep in mind J.R. was under Woody last yr too...the guy who was doing things on twitter unprofessionally....also the same guy who said on twitter this yr to an under age girl something about Piping and going at Humphries somehwhat unprofessionally.

I did read an article this yr where J.R. said he doesn't party nearly as much this yr as he did last yr. Not sure if this is Woody getting through to him or a guy who is 27 about to turn 28 having been through some real tough situations causing him to adjust. But hey if you guys feel Woody deserves all the credit for a player shooting 42% and 35%, which are average at best in of themselves go with that. J.R. plays starters minutes and starters usage rate, therefore his numbers stood a chance to look better from an overall output and he's been in more positions to succeed.

Kudos to JR for a great season, you deserve every accolade and praise sent your way!

Kudos to Woodson, to get JR to buy into the system, channel his focus on the court, and minimize his partying off the court.

JR Smith, 6th Man of the Year.

Woodson puts Smith in a position to succeed but not consistently riding him. Smith takes alot of suspect shots, a coach like Thibodeau would probably go postal.
