Please step on up!

Kurt was our best Pick setter
KMart was pretty good at it too
Chandler is ok at it but does not get enough contact

Watching Boozer set great picks last night and watching how the knicks could not set a clean pick (or rarely) was sad.

We need good PICKS if we are gonna have success. It opens everything up. Not softy picks.

in rec league, i set monster picks,

in fact, i get the most joys from setting the monster picks,

before i started squatting and deadlifting, i could not do this,

there is an art to a strong pick, it sends a message,

i hope that someone will step up and set the picks for us, i do not know who will play for us, so many are injured, i cannot keep up with the injuries

Cope was setting a lot of picks last night but they weren't bone rattling. Hope he continues to develop. Still can't believe that the Knicks are second in the east and they have two rookie league minimum guys in their rotation and currently starting. Says a lot about the resiliency of this team, Grunwald and Woodson.

Sorry, I am not familiar

I am actually 5 foot 7 and weigh 180. I am average in upper body strength but I have monster legs. I often use this advantage to set picks on players who are far far bigger than me and this causes many mismatches. When they realized that this was happening and that at my size I was able to stop the defender in his tracks and cause a mismatched switch, they started putting a big on me so that he could switch without getting killed on the switch. This caused me to have a mismatch too with a slower big on me.

My exploits

Moral of the story ... we need strong legged picks that stop defenders in their tracks. When Oakley would come to set a pick, the defender shuttered at the bone jarring outcome. I would like to see Melo setting more picks to the defense will never leave him and that will open up the floor in so many ways.

get familiar!

you sound like you are naturally strong, that's awesome! how good does it feel to stand there like a stone?

i am naturally very skinny with a fine bone structure, to be able to put guys bigger than me to the ground with a monster pick, this is one of the sweetest things in life,

melo absolutely has the body and the strength to absolutely floor people! DO IT, MELO!!

i would say a hard pick is a lost art, it is up there with a monster swat and a monster dunk, they should keep stats for big picks!

what a message it sends, the fear it strikes, one of the greatest moves in basketball,

Hard picks are overrated. Sure, knocking a point guard on his ass to set the tone once or twice is nice, but it comes down to technique. The key is to set a slightly moving screen. Most NBA players don't get called for it. Amare does it beautifully. Martin and Cope are pretty good as well. The rest of the bigs are awful at breaking to the basket. Watch when Amare does it. First thing, he gets a very wide stance. As the Pg tries to fight over, he has to slip around Amare's extended leg, and the Amare breaks to the basket. If Amare's man didn't fan out to Felton very high, it's most likely going to result in a dunk for Amare, a wide open mid range J or floater for Raymond, or a wide open 3 point shooter. That's how the pick and roll game works.

Chandler makes way too much contact and ties up the guard, usually leading to a switch. That's not what you really want especially with Tyson having no post gsme(or at least none that he's really shown despite working with Hakeem)

you know who sets an awesome, very subtle moving pick? KG! guy is a legend at this move,

trick to a monster pick is to come at an angle, something like 7 or 8 o'clock behind the defender, and have the ball handler lead the defender into your body, BOOM!

---

i believe it on kurt! guy just looks like a pick machine,

---

there are many types of pick, sometimes yo want to just set a soft pick and roll for the hoop, other times you want to set the tone,

Hopefully Kmart is back for game 1 and it is not anounced that hes out another 2-4weeks

Sounds like Tyson wont be healthy this yr and a compromised Tyson is useless as weve seen

I think KMart might play tomorrow. Lots of breaks once the Knicks get to the playoffs so that should help. I thought Tyson looked good in his second game back but I think he was only in because Kenyon couldn't play.

Theres nothing subtle about KGs moving screens

Theres nothing subtle about KGs moving screens

they're subtle or at least crafty enough to evade the whistle

I dont know man I think he gets away with it due to reputation a lot of the time. JVG calls him out on it almost every game.

Been a problem for a while now but they have improved a little since the all-star break. I don't know who will set picks but I wish they would set screens and picks more often. Aside from the tactical reasons, Xs and Os, it makes the defense work harder and expend more energy.

Great post IWG!

There are different types for different skill set/players. It all depends what/how you would like the defense to react.

I also agree that setting up the pick a bit behind and have your PG lead his defender into the pick renders the best results, especially when they are fighting over the top. This is great especially when you have a high pct shooting PG like Nash or CP3.

It is still effective for a PG that penetrates after the pick. That in itself is how Felton gets his best looks. That and the 3.

I like the penetration but not the 3 behind a pick. He rarely hits those.

Felton should never stop and pop behind a pick. He is not good enough as a shooter. He has been penetrating pretty well though.
