Knicks' White told he's in slam dunk contest: source
By MARC BERMAN
Posted: 5:10 PM, February 7, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS – Knicks high-flying swingman James White has already been informed he’ll be named tonight to the NBA’s All-Star Slam-Dunk competition, according to a league source.

TNT will announce tonight at 7 p.m. the slam-dunk participants and the rest of the Saturday skills participants during All-Star Weekend on Feb. 16.

White, who played the last two seasons in the Italian League, is nicknamed “Flight White’’ and has big shoes to fill. Former Knicks guard Nate Robinson, who is 5-7, won the slam-dunk event a record three times.

Last night in Washington, White wouldn’t confirm he was named, but told The Post regarding the possibility, “It’s fun for the fans – an opportunity to show your talents. It will be fun.’’

White gave his Knicks teammates a preview last week at Temple University after practice when he took off from the free-throw line and leapt all the way to the rim.

White first became a dunking legend when he battled David Lee in a memorable McDonald’s All-American Slam-Dunk competition in 2001 when they were in high school. YouTube is filled with different White dunking highlights.

Ironically, White’s role with the Knicks is as a defensive swingman and rarely has he dunked in games. “I want the two points,’’ White said last night. “If I have an opportunity to dunk, I’ll do it. ‘’

Steve Novak is expected to be named to the 3-point shooting contest. The team captain for the East during Saturday's festivities is Dwyane Wade, his former Marquette teammate.

Having White in the contest in pretty cool, but I'd love to see J.R 'that dude' Smith run away with the contest.

So no J.R Smith it's looking like. Oh well.

I'm predicting Faried to win the contest, for the simple fact he slams with so much power/strength.

I dont watch most of these guys but I was gonna guess the opposite. Don't most acrobatic guys win this, not so much power, strength?

Exactly. I still watch it, because I've always enjoyed all-star weekend but where are the likes of LeBron James, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard, Russell Westbrook and even little Nate Robinson? Pathetic to say the least. These guys make millions upon millions of dollars but yet can't prove the fans with a true dunk contest?

The pride of our players of today, is nothing when compared to the heart/pride of the 80's/90's. Ewing would have never teamed up with Reggie Miller and John Stockton in order to win a championship. Too much pride amongst those men to admit they couldn't do it alone although Stockton had Malone. Because if Stockton, Miller and Ewing teamed up? Sorry MJ and the Bulls, but those 3 would have combined for ring after ring.

Dwight and Nate did it enough times especially when no one else would. Blake Griffins dunk contest was awful in my opinion. While I dont think Lebron would be particularly good in a dunk contest, I found it annoying how he got everyones hopes up by making a huge deal about him entering that one year and then just backing out as the date got closer.

Maybe the league had to call knicks and make sure they were not about to cut him. Be embarrassing if a participant had no uniform to wear.

Funny, I never watched the Mcdonalds game or anything about it but for some reason I was watching the dunk contest that David Lee won. Why remember? It just struck me "the white kid" of the group competing won. He also did a dunk that he took his shirt off as part of the dunk. He was 6-4 then and was not projected to be a Center/PF but grew another 5 inches in college. He came out early because Horford and Noah were pushing him out. Thats how stacked Florida was!

Flight White is a Knick but Im won't be watching. If he wins, I'll see the replay. This competition has lost its panache over the years.

Winner. Novak will win the three point contest. Give Novak wide open looks? And he's not missing.

Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler for the East (All-Star game). White and Novak during the dunk/3PT contest's.

Great to see all these Knicks heading into all-star weekend. I'm watching.

Green has got to hold the record for the longest break between slam dunk contests lol Why not trot out Harold Miner and Brent Barry for the hell of it?

Funny thing is I do not remember White dunking at all this year. If he still has his legs its over. FT line everything. I surprise he has never did a 360 from the free throw line.
