Yep
Nice win last night however strange how when Knicks got off 1st 20-25 games they were awesome cause Knick Defense was in top 3 in nba east conf. & certainly in top 8 defense in whole league then.

Currently instead, Knicks D is likely among 10 worse in NBA & during Knick slide remarks all came out from knick camp they just needed to fix the offensive woes.

Glad for their nice record but its not like Shump & Sheed was there 100% early on during knicks play & praise for defending by local & nba experts media.

Maybe that is their main issue, D again which believe it or not was worse recently now than while under LAL coach Mike D'Antoni. It will be one & down in any round of playoffs unless knicks fix the D, get their mindsets right and cease allowing only Tyson Chandler to be only Knick playing some D in key spots for 4 quarters.

That is how I see it.

when your so called best players don't defend.. it is hard to be a good defensive team.... carmelo anthony has been a turnstile, chandler doesn't block shots... kidd is ailing, amare just isn't a great defender...... you can bark, and bark defense all you want, mean mug players, and make examples out of guys like copeland, fields( when he was here) and Toney douglas.... but if your so called best player is acting like a doorman... your defense is going to suffer...

I agree with you, well said

I am a big Melo supporter & glad he's in NY but with all the critique AMARE gets for poor D Stout has got better & play some D in few Knicks Wins & losses and Stout dont even start anymore where Melo leads in mpg so now its Melo turn his D & details to coverage been horrible so Yes he first & foremost need to shift his priorities from score jump shooting & passing over to some focus on defense.

Melo better be smart. Also woodson need to get smart & get up his best player hiney to improve on D or Nyk will suffer & be in trouble vs more defensive oriented teams in nba who will be opponents in playoffs.

I think Melo is the easy guy to target for D because it's what he's been criticized for his entire career (rightfully so). But I don't think the effort is lacking with him. I think the defense of our guards has led to overall Defensive breakdowns. Chandlers one on one defense has always been suspect, but when switching and PG penetration leads him to be all over the court the middle is completely wide open.

This isn't a "Melo doesn't play D" problem. The team as whole is showing less effort on staying with their man.

You're right but each knick all take turns being bad whether starters on D or role bench players.
Guards Shump & Ray get slight pass until they get more gms in & timing on D' end of court.
Even the best T.Chandler blew few D assignments since he's overworked by coaching, cant ever question Chandlers effory all 4 qtrs..

Rest of guys been Sh_t on D, regardless of team D or man to man.
R.Brewer brought in here u dont even see anymore, PG Paublo is nice but when he cant steal ball he isnt a guard you can depend on for consistent D. Forget Copeland & Novacs cause when u cant get Offense from either they dont defend or rebound enough for their height.

AS much fun made of dirty Kurty Thomas for old guy he gives bit of effort & will hard foul at times when needed but cant be on floor too often. Kidd cant do it D'fensively again but isnt 100%

The whole D is lousy aside from Melo & I am going to rip a tad coach Woody whom deservingly got praises for NY improvements in D before. I wont accept fact on Sheed nor Camby who chat on defense & let others know what to do but at their ages they aint here & isnt sole reason for poor defensive declining.

Honestly, we have had this problem before... you can go back to marbury, zach, etc.. those guys didn't give the defensive effort, and it showed. You can't be the leader of a team and not put in the work every night when it comes to defense...

Were we ever 27-15 under D'antoni while missing significant players with injuries?

No but Knicks have yet to play KNICK D' in January 2013

Dont solely tout the record, easy come easy go.
We dont want any part of easy go.

.500 record at end of season for nba east entry into playoffs do not excite DJ

Knicks have a homestand & road gm against few teams to do some win streak now, .
Lets see what record is in 1 wk or so then before we start to ignore a FACT this team ain't
Playing nba defense anymore in January or what's needed to get better.

Worst case can happen for our loved Nyk is to lose div. To Brooklyn Nets & have to be seeded
Elsewhere for nba playoffs. That is my whole point its called 'Playing the game da right way! '

Starts & ends with D always an identity staplemark of successful Ny knick teams.

We aint beating teams in playoffs by trying to outscore them which some of Knick philosophy
Seem prevalent & few seem quite happy with that manner to win few games.

Plus, we only have this good of a record BECAUSE of our early season D. We haven't gained much ground since December. We've been hovering at 12 games over .500 since then.

Ha! I was actually worried we might have been and I'd just forgotten about it, but luckily by the time we got to 27 wins we also had 27 losses.

For me some of the critics are applying a strange double standard- they seem to be saying that we stink, and our record is a fraud, but at the same time arguing as though we were an elite team that is under performing.

We're either a mediocre team, in which case a 27-15 record is fantastic and we're over achieving; or we're a great team (in which case 27-15 is still good anyways, but I guess they expect us to be 35-7) and underachieving. Which is it?

I agree with DJmusic though, in that we need to plumpen our wins in February, as March and April are brutal, especially for an older team:

Wait so whos fault is it that this teams defense has been bad? You start off your post saying its more than one player and then end it saying that its one player's fault.

Melo is not only personally responsible for the whole team's poor defense, but he also visits the opposing teams the night before a game and gives them shooting tips and a copy of our game plan.

I think the main issue with the D is that this team either refuses to fight over screens or is told to switch almost every time. If it's the latter, then I'm pretty confused, given that Woody was on the Pistons CS that dominated on the D the yr they won it all. I realize the Knicks don't have that defensive talent, but why won't they stop the switching already!?!? It makes me feel insane watching it.

Also, and I feel like I always post this, Tyson needs some help down there. He has looked like **** to me the last handful of games and I think he is just worn down. I feel like we could've had a Reggie Evans, Earl Clark or that monster from last night, Ivan, all of whom would've helped the frontline a ton. Kurt is just too slow footed and Cope is not very good on D.

Once Shump and Felton regain form, I see the perimter being OK, but the frontline is a huge issue that needs addressing soon. I hear DJ White is gonna be free to sign w/ a team at some point. How's his D? I have little faith in the health of Camby and Sheed right now.

lol

But seriously I actually like it.

The best players gets credit for team success, they should get blame for losses.

There are no "team" related rewards after all, just mvp, mip, dpoy, all-star,...etc.

To be fair he really does not have any help to team up with him in the PF position and no one now that can even legit back him up with Wallace/Camby both out
There simply is no better Center we could have acquired than Chandler
You don't seem to appreciate what he brings and means to this team

He also has been playing with a bad neck
And he still made 2 key stops that led us to our W last night with Atlanta, one of which Amare was just standing there looking at a layup by Teague as Tyson rushed over for a block
*this is the play in the final seconds, it is in the final minutes though*

Tyson never complains about helping his team mates, while NO ONE can cover his man when he helps them
Remember what a healthy Jared Jeffries did with our DEFENSE with Chandler together?

Lin
Iman
Fields
JJ
Chandler

Jeffries is long, mobile, SMART, and quick for his size/length to rotate and help
He could play decent 1v1 DEFENSE on his man, or/and be the help defender as he is much quicker than Chandler
He also puts a body on his opponents, fights for position, boxes out, and more importantly has the ability and did help Tyson Chandler when Tyson helped someone else
JJ was just a great compliment and the glue to our DEFENSE, and smart/hustle Defender, and complimented Tyson Chandler very much
Although not very talented, he sure made Tyson's job so much easier, along with playing off Iman's pressure
Look at that lineup above, it isn't the most talented but they played with so much trust in each other, helped each other, and played as ONE UNIT
Fields was very effective playing the SF and not SG, during that span
That group know's how to move off the ball, JJ setting screen's off the ball, and play off each other's abilities to break our opponents DEFENSE

But it was the DEFENSE of that core that was the most impressive

Right correct, their record hasnt shown an upside since those months all nba was talking of our knicks.

Do not want to seem like i always complain *grin we are happy with must win vs. Good hawk team.

However i got impression if nyk played vs some other nba team whom can make a stop defensively
I felt knicks could have easily lost again @ home
