RUMOR ALERT: LAKERS AND KNICKS WORKING ON A PAU GASOL FOR AMARE STOUDEMIRE TRADE

The rumor around town is that the Lakers are actively looking to trade Pau Gasol to the Knicks for Amare Stoudemire

HoopsVibe's Very Quick Call: This isn't much of a win for either team, but edge goes to Knicks.

This isn't the first time Pau Gasol has been at the center of trade rumors in Los Angeles. The Big Llama has known his time in LA is questionable at best for over a year now. First, it was Gasol leaving LA as part of the trade that was going to bring Chris Paul to the Lakers, but that got vetoed by David Stern. Next, it was the non-stop trade rumors throughout the off-season reportedly due to his soft play in the playoffs last season. This time it is a trade between the Laker big man and the New York Knicks' power forward Amare Stoudemire.

Gasol is set to earn $38.3 million over the next 2 seasons, an amount far ahead of his current production. Yet, Stoudemire will be earning $60 million over the next 3 years which is also far ahead of his current ability to produce on the court. Whoever ends up with Stoudemire would have more money on the table, but both teams would be only debatably improved. The question is which aging big man is worth it. Both are having significant injury issues this season and having trouble fitting in with their respected offenses.

The Knicks are statistically better when Stoudemire is out of the game. New York has a record of 23-9 when Stoudemire doesn't play and a record of 23-29 when he is in the game. It is easy to see how New York would be motivated to find a player that fits with Carmelo Anthony better than Stoudemire. No matter what you think of Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks win more games when the offense flows through him.

It would appear this trade would benefit the Knicks more than the Lakers, but LA may be desperate enough to throw more money at a season going down the drain. Unfortunately, acquiring Stoudemire will do little to help the Lakers win and simply add another big name and up-tempo style player not built to how Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant play ball.

Holy cow! I didn't realize it was that bad! I'd love to do this trade, although I know we'd have to include a lot to sweeten the deal (I think).

I would take a healthy Amare over Gasol anyday but Amare's health is only getting worse. SIGN ME UP for this trade now!

why? Gasol rebounds and defends much better than Amare.

I guess we can put the "Greater Fool" theory to the test.

Observation that any price (no matter how unrealistic) can be justified if a buyer believes that there is another buyer who will pay an even-higher price for the same item. This line of thinking causes and fuels stockmarket and commodity market booms and manias which, in due course, lead to busts and paranoias.

When I read this, and the fables told on the UK I can see how it works beyond the stock market.

I'm pretty sure this rumor is just that, a rumor.

But man...This is like the perfect Power Forward for this team. He can post, he can hit mid to long range J's, he can PnR, he can pick and Pop, he can Pass, and he's an excellent rebounder/shot blocker. Light years ahead of Amare on the defensive side of the ball.

Only thing Amare had over Pau all these years was explosiveness and athletic ability. Now that that's gone, it's a no brainer.

But, I'm pretty sure this trade rumor is bogus...so I'll just move along.

Gasol is another veteran with championship expereince, not to mention the things Chuckbuck said he can do.

He's also much less of a knucklehead than Amar'e (fire extinguisher).

Pau is soft. Amar'e has been greatly slowed by injuries. It all evens out. I do like Amar'e though and would like to see him stay and attempt to finish what he began.

Me too.

As much as I DISliked the STAT signing (because of the money and years not the player), I really do wish him well and want him to suceed here in NY with Melo....but if it can't happen, Gasol will do well here I think.

This may be good for STAT if he can't adjust to Melo being the ALPHA

What?! I can't imagine this is real. What would the Lakers possibly get out of it? Why wouldn't they be trading Gasol for a package of role players since depth has been their biggest problem going back to last season? I doubt very much that this is real.

I know I know, the whole "Knicks are Back" proclamation by Amare in 2010, and that he was the first to commit yada yada...Do guys here not know if this trade were to go down, we take back less years from Pau, and get out from under Amare's uninsured contract?

Player for Player, it could be considered a wash for both teams. But financially, cap wise, and flexibility wise Gasol is still very much in demand...he was almost traded for CP3 until Stern vetoed!

A lot of Laker fans say Gasol is no where near the player he's remembered or thought of as being- he's declined a lot, and is much slower. They say he's better suited as a centre these days. Gasol of a few years ago would have been great, but it might be best if you catch some Laker games to see what he's like now.

Gasol would be fine if his coaches would just get him the ball on the low block consistently instead of running this Princeton offense trash and SSOL crap that pulls him out of the paint and away from basket.
