I've lived in Brooklyn for 12-plus years. I've been ambivalent about the Rattner development -- basically, I think the arena is a good thing in the right place and the rest of the plan is over the top with too many too tall buildings -- and that Rattner is a sleaze who got way too sweet a deal.

More germaine to this board, I really didn't know how I'd feel about the team that plays 10 blocks from where I live when the season began. I expected I'd root for the Knicks and the Nets and, when they played each other, for the Knicks. I don't hate the Nets. Never did. I don't root that way. I'm a Mets fan who doesn't hate the Yankees, a Giants fan who doesn't hate the Jets. I reserve my fan hatred for the Celtics and the Eagles. I kind of expected the Nets to grow on me. Maybe they still will. But for now, it hasn't happened.

I've been to a couple of Nets games. Both wins ... Toronto and the Celts. They were kind of boring. Even though the Raptors game was the first in the Arena and the Celts game was tight right to the end, I found my mind wandering. It was cool to hear "Brook-Lyn, Brook-Lyn," but I wasn't chanting, and I aint getting too pumped up about Brook Lopez.

Meanwhile, I haven't missed a Knicks game on TV all season. I'm as excited about them as I've been since the Spreewell, Houston, Camby playoff run.

Maybe if the Knicks sucked again, I'd be switching over. I know. It's heresy to admit to that on this board. But, the truth is, I don't think it will ever happen. It's very hard to undo 40 years of loving a team, no matter how exasperating they may be and how convenient the alternative is.

I'm with you man, except I've lived in BK my whole life! My heart still lies with the Knicks, but I expect the Nets to grow on me over the years. Fandom isn't something that can be consciously imposed, I've discovered. Most of the Nets fans are NJ transplants, or general basketball fans who live in Brooklyn.

I will say I resent a bit the branding forces that have gone into "Brooklyn." The Nets remind me of a Disney franchise for the Disney Brooklyn. Don't mean to sound bitter cause I still love my home borough, but it's a different place than it was and I'll have to see how it continues to evolve.

That said, I'll still enjoy watching the Nets grow and rooting for them second. Just cause you're a Knick fan, doesn't mean you can't appreciate good bball.

Kind of feel the same way. Watching the Netsis just like watching another team. Its just not there. LIke watching Portland or the Jazz.

IM excited brooklyn has a team and think its great for NYC basketball.

Didn't you say that was kind of true a while ago? Ha!

I agree, you can't really consciously just switch and become a fan of another team- it's hard to actually genuinely care about another team suddenly. The mind may be willing, but the body ain't.

I'm not tempted by the Nets at all, but during the dark days of IT, I did try flirting with the idea of following another team, but I couldn't even get through a single game! Just didn't have the passion at all.

The way I look at it is that there is no other team in the nba that I would follow as religiously through 10+ losing seasons and all of the calamities that we had over the years since Ewing left, like I did with the Knicks. Therefore I'm a Knicks fan for life.

Its his confessional and no need for all to jump in with their own value statement of Knick love.

We get it.

Not sure about what your "true" statement is but I did root for the NEW YORK NETs who played in Uniondale and won championships with a young DR. J. When they moved to Jersey I never want to a game there. Only time I ever was in the "Brendan Byrne" meadowlands arena was to see Van Halen in 1983 because my girlfriend wanted to go. We married so it was a good investment but the concert sucked.

I can see how many causual fans are stoked about the Nets and are into it.

I'll root for them to advance if the knicks don't in the playoffs. NY first over others.

Im not making a concious decision to pick and choose one vs, or over another. Im just letting it happen.

Watched a few Net games. Nothing. I'll root for the knicks tonite but not goning to be upset if we lose.

Think you misread the emphasis of my post- I wasn't brazenly declaring my Knick love- I still don't even know if following a disaster of a team for 10 years is a good thing- could be a curse! (but yeah, can see why people declaring their love for the Knicks on a Knicks fan board would be out of place... to be fair, this isn't a Brooklyn nets fans support group you know...). My post was about how hard it is to switch teams or start rooting for a new one.

I'm genuinely interested to see how many Knick fans can successfully make the switch and are still Net fans by seasons end- the only fan whose managed to successfully switch seems to be DJ to the raptors.

The 'true' statement is I'm sure I remember you admitting on some other thread that you were actually waiting to see if the Nets did well, and the Knicks sucked (I could have misread it).

There's only one thing I like about the Nets - hearing them called Brooklyn. I haven't heard a team referred to that way since the Dodgers deserted us for browner pastures. But having been a Knicks fan for close to 60 years, changing to the Nets isn't really an option. Who you root for isn't an intellectual exercise. It's too personal for that.

Up until this summer I was rooting for the Knicks above all and then the Nets secondarily. But something changed this summer. It became obvious to me that Dolan didnt care about who the NY fans wanted. He chose players that he liked, fired announcers who dared constructively criticized the team, and chased away front office staff that decided not to be yes men. It became to me Dolans team over the NY fans team.

To me JDolan never had what it takes to take the dog out behind the shed and do what needed to be done. A championship contender is built over a long period of time with patience. Construction workers knock down a building that has been in bad shape, in order to build a new one that everyone can enjoy.

The knicks needed to trade away every last good player after Ewing to go to the draft and get a high pick. The next year, get another high pick. Sign the players to Bird right extensions and then supplement them with 1 or 2 big free agent signings. If it doesnt work out, knock everything down and start again. That is how you build a championship contender for a possible dynasty.

It occurred to me only this summer why JDolan doesnt want to knock down and rebuild. JDolan doesnt care about championships, he cares about money. People have been saying it for years but I never wanted to believe them. Dolan has transformed this team into the Utah Jazz of the East. Perpetually teasing the fans with making the playoffs but never winning a championship, forget about even sniffing a dynasty. As long as Dolan can keep the seats filled during the season and maybe a few games into the playoffs, he is happy. He is unwilling to take the "dog behind the shed" and bearing some losing seasons because it would mean some lost revenue.

This isnt New Yorks team, this is Dolans team. But because of loyalty I will continue to root for them, in the back of my mind I have the hopes that one of the other Dolan boys will take over leadership. But in Brooklyn I see a team that wants to be a winner and proved it by years ago sacrificing some money in order to go to the draft and get someone like Brook Lopez and Marshon Brooks. This summer I decided to root for the Brooklyn Nets first and the Knicks second. Not just because I am a Brooklynite but also because this is the closest we have to a NEW YORK basketball team.

I do like the way Broolyn has gone about its business and has resonable flexabilty outside of JJ's contract. Knicks are not that far off with the exception of Amare's contract. both are as bad but JJ is a healthier player. KNicks veteran roster has yielded a good start.

Barkley might be correct that Nets ceiling could be higher but what we don't know is how high it is or if they get there. Knicks took a safer route for the short run. Hopefully we have not seen the best of knicks, or if we have, can we sustain it or get it back in the spring?

It was a bigger game for the Nets than knicks. Teams have to learn to close games out. Not saying they found the formula quite yet. We learned long ago that if nobody else can hit a shot then Melo has to create and force one. some nights it will fall......some it won't.

The "Act one" was a good one last nite!

In case you haven't notice Dolan did try the rebuiding mode, it doesn't work..1 out of every 10 teams have a successful rebuilding project, yet only 1 team (spurs with duncun, parker and manu) have yielded a championship..

Now look at some of the teams that have won championships over the course of 10 yrs..miami,boston,lakers,dallas,spurs.

Those teams were all primarily veteren teams with maybe 1 0r 2 young studs, I personally would never rebuild if Im an owner..

The nets have a solid competitive team, but they are not contenders, atleast not this yr and not with the make up of that roster, it still needs tweaking.

The knicks have 3 guys on there teams with rings (wallace, kidd, Tyson) they have the kind of leadership that you dream of having in the playoffs. That ceiling barkley is talking about, it's base on THE BIG "IF" word..If so and so can play up to his potential, every team has potential, very few live up to it. gallo has the potential to be the best shooter, wilson chandler has the potential to be a heck of a player, yet 3 years in the league and there far to inconsistant..

A real owner doesn't rebuild, he gets players that complement each other, yes it's a young mans game, but after the 82 regular season games, do these young players have the mentality to shift gears correctly.

OKC being a prime example of what I'm talking about, you remember the previous yr when westbrook was accuse of shooting to much in the playoffs (which he was) and last yr harden disappeared altogether.

what about derrick rose playoff runs (outside of last season) or melo's one done yrs in denver, or labrons short comings in cleveland, or KG's one done playoff yrs in mini..young super stars with no real guides, just marginal young talent around them for yrs..

Woodson knows your team isn't winning anything in the playoffs with young stars.

BTW if the nets lose any of there starters do to injury do they have the depth to over come it..

The thread title clearly says "Knicks fan". Anyone who is a Nets fan should go post on a Nets forum. Nobody cares when you decided to become a Nets fan, nor why you did it. Saying that you root for Knicks , but secondary to the nets is some BS.

You make a great point here, but you are basing your argument on the wrong premise that I am referring to a young team. I believe a team can have some young guys but it isnt necessary by any means. The teams you mentioned on top were built in the very way I described, that is they started with draft acquisitions and surrounded their acquisitions with top tier free agent signings to get championships.

Miami drafted Wade and surrounded him with free agent signings of Shaq, Walker
Boston drafted Pierce and surrounded him with free agent signings of Garnett, Allen
Lakers (draft acquisition) Bryant and surrounded him with free agent signings of Shaq, Rice
Dallas drafted Dirk and surrounded him with free agent signings of Kidd, Marion
Spurs drafted Duncan and Parker and surrounded them with free agent signings of Jackson, Rose

So you pretty much proved my point for me. The reason this was able to work for these teams was because signing those draft acquisitions under their Bird rights allowed them the flexibility to be able to sign max contract additional help.

Its his confessional. I called the Pope and he told me there are not rules.

I asked him: "can a Catholic renounce his faith in a confession or does he get told he can go to his new church and do it"?

He said: "if the confessor feels more comfortable doing it in a church perhaps he has not fully left the church?"

I said: "Thats some phuching wise ass shyt right there "Padre" and guess its why you the Pope"!

Pope said: "you do a great samuel L Jackson impersonation! I often have a desire during easter mass to do such a thing. We love Pulp Fiction here in the Vatican!"

Nalod: "so you Knicks or Nets?"

Pope: "tough, The devil he like the HEAT for obvious reasons. He a Duke fan also! God Make the sound of THUNDER when he pass wind. So I root for Thunder!!! IN football I like the Saints, Baseball the Angels!"

Nalod: "So you cool with a Knick fan confessiong he now a Net fan on a Knick site"

Pope: "is the Pope Polish?"

Nalod: "Ha!" "You german right?"

Pope: "very good, most people know this but get all starphuched by me so they just nod and patronize me".

Nalod: "You said "starphuch" right?"

Pope: "I read up on Linsanity last year and read such a word used"

Nalod:" you think the knicks did the right thing"?

Pope; "no, you think Lin did it alone? The big guy is a basketball fan and felt it was time for an Asian man to kick some ass. He over did it with Yao Ming. He wanted LIn in NY, otherwise he would have had made Linsanity in another city.

Nalod: "Whats next?"

Pope: "God loves ice hockey and wants a black man to be a superstar, a sort of Lebron James of Hockey! Why you think he got the Islanders to Brooklyn? People will pay good money to see a black hockey player beat up white guys. Its the appeal of Tarantino's new movie "Django Unchained".

Nalod:"Ask the big guy if the knicks are going all the way"!

Pope: " he likes it when Jessica Alba is sitting courtside but I think he likes Beyonce so we'll have to see"

Nalod: "what does he think of James Dolan"

Pope: "LOL! We talked about this just the other day! He said he gave man the ability to abort human life and thought we should have been more selective"!

This is some funny ****. Glad to know the Pope forgives our impure knick fan-ness even if some others aren't so wise.

It's like Billy Martin's wife said when asked about him constantly getting found in titty bars: "I don't care where he gets his appetite, as long as he comes home for dinner."
