On how this season's Knicks team is better suited to compete for a championship: "I think Mike (D'Antoni) was very, very successful and you can't take that away from him. I have a great deal of respect for him in terms of what he's done. But you know as well I know that defense wins titles, and that's the only way I know it because I experienced it in Detroit as a Piston. But if you can mix some offense and defense with your team, you become the total package." He credited the Spurs and Lakers for doing that, leading to multiple championships since 1999.

Woodson to Stephen A and Ryan Ruocco:

"No offense to Mike D'Antoni, but defense wins championships"

At least we hear it from the horses mouth: no scheme, plans, traces, or preaching of defense from D'Antoni according to Woodson. Woodson didn't throw him under the bus though, and was graceful and thanked Mike for the opportunity to coach and learn some of his offense.

It sounds like Woodson's gotten Cocky. No doubt he's had a nice small run here but he talks a big game for a .434 coach (.353 in the playoffs). He should at least wait until he achieves something meaningful in the playoffs before giving lessons to other coaches.

I think he always felt that way. At least he waited until d'antoni got another job before saying it.

As much as I dislike D'antoni, im glad that Woodson was his assistant coach for as long as he was. The offense he picked up from D'antoni is definitely a contributing factor to our hot start this season.
Knicksfan: Hypocrite league that fines players after the game for flopping but in the game and with obvious flopping they call the fouls.

history is littered with examples of people whose first attempt was unsuccessful yet later became successful. In coaching, Joe Torre and Bill Belichick immediately come to mind

but I agree that he should keep his mouth shut

It's not all about winning percentage. Look at where he started with Atlanta. He improved that team every year he was there for 6 straight seasons.

bonn1997 - no one competes at any professional level of sports without a huge ego. Coaches are no exception.

Cocky? Perhaps the word is confident in his strategy and his ability to convey that strategy.

You would prefer Mike Woodson know his place and be humble?

Too late.

He had six full seasons in Atlanta and never achieved the amount of success MDA did in a tougher conference. You'd think he'd be more cognizant that he's talking about someone with a record superior to his own.

It's more impressive to have the maturity to make the right comments rather than lash out at others. It's embarrassing when you lash out against someone with more success than you.

I was listening to the interview and I thought Woodson could've handled it better too. I hated the job Dantoni did with the Knicks but Woodson's answer was a direct shot at Dantoni pretty much saying his system will never win a ring. And I agree even with a defensive coordinator SSOL isn't condusive to playing defense because all your energy is spent speeding up the game on the offensive end. Lakers might win because there is just too much talent and players who play great defense like KOBE, howard, gasol and artest. Guys who already know how to play defense unlike Amare and Nash. Whether Dantoni adjusts to the roster or the Lakers add speed and shooters they will have a great chance in the playoffs because unlike Phoenix those guys will clamp down on the defensive end. If not then the Dantoni-Laker marriage will be another colossal failure

He's obviously saying he thinks MDA is incompetent at teaching defense, and for some reason he felt the need to publicly announce that.

gunsnewing - "pretty much saying"?

Sounds like some heavy rationalization going on around these parts.

Mike Woodson is not subservient enough to his superior Mike D'Antoni? Interesting.

Bonn1997 - that is your takeaway.

Defense wins championships is not a slap to D'Antoni. It is a canard repeated in football all the time. Were the coaches that recite that arrogant, or simply advocates of a certain style? Could it be that Woodson is simply standing up for his style of coaching?

Without any intent of (or perceived) arrogance, of course

Defense and players. Phoenix was not getting past Shaq and Duncan with Amare playing the 5

No offense to Misterearl but idiotic comments are a waste of my time.

There, that wasn't remotely insulting to you, right?

23-6

Personally, having Mike Woodson get in Carmelo's face about playing better defense is kinda cool.

Beat San Antonio.

The Knicks have played very well in the 29 games under Woodson. He's talking about someone who's had that kind of success for entire seasons though.
