Bling is important, as is length of service and role to the team. Players with deep playoff runs and roles in memorable games are important. What the player did as a knick is what is important. Reason why McAdoo, AMare and Melo are lower on the list. I listed guys with individual awards. They rank high. 1)Walt Frazier - 2)Willis Reed - Two time finals MVP, season MVP and ROY. 3)Patrick Ewing - One ring and an MVP and he could have been no. 1! Our best player but not greatest Knick. 4)Dave Debusschere - I move him up because he was the final piece of the puzzle, played 7-8 seasons as a knick, retired a knick, has two rings, guarded Wilt at times in the finals, and was on the podium when we got the Ewing envelope. 5)Earl Monroe - By no means Am I dissing him here. He has one ring and two trips to the finals. His best years was before NY where he was the man in Balitimore and was unstoppable. IM judging his knick career. 6)Bill Bradley - Dudes with Rings and long knick careers carry a lot of weight. Bill is in the Hall of fame. His story is awesome! Brush up on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Bradley 7)Jerry Lucas - I keep wanting to put Bernard here but again guys with Bling get the nod. Willis was out most of 72' season and this cat hung 16.7 pts per game, 13.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Knicks lost in finals but Luke had to play Jabbar, Unseld and Wilt in the playoffs! He played 3 seasons for us but had a monster year that carried us to the finals and the next year as a role player won. 8)Dick Barnett - Starting 2 for the 70 team. Multiple all star and put in 9 years. Was a reserve role on the 73' team but when he opens his jewlery box he has two rings smiling back at him! 09)Dick McGuire- This guy had all kinds of records and was the best player of his knick generation. He was the face of the franchise. PLayed his college ball at ST. Johns in the golden era also. 10) Harry Gallatin - 7 Time All Star and HOF'er as a knick! 11)Charles Oakley - I keep him here because he helped define the era aside of Ewing. Had a long KNick run with meaningful games! 12)Bernard King - The reason he drops here is his body of work as a knick is very brief. He basically played three seasons. His most amazing year was a 55 game season before he fell. He was great in his short time but he just did not accomplish much. "What if" is not a reason to move him ahead alone. Emotionally he should be higher. Look at his knick stats: httphttp://://www.basketballreference.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=KINGBE01 13)John starks- also helped define the Ewing era with his grit and important games played. "The Dunk", "Headbutt Reggie"! 14)Richie Guerin - 6 Time Knicks All Star, Top 10 in pretty much every franchise category. Speaks for itself 15)Willie Nauls- 4 time allstar with great PPG avg! http://www.basketballreference.com/players/playerpage.htm?ilkid=NAULLWI01 16)Allan Houstan- The shot. Great knick! 17)Carl Braun - 10 years in the dead ball era at a time guys did not usually last 10 years. Some good teams back then. 18)Latrell Sprewell-4.5 years a knick with two great playoff performances. He could be listed after starks as well. 19)Larry Johnson- Stat wise not that great but helped define an era and went to battle in memorable games. The 4 pt play! 20)Mark Jax- ROY and a 5 year knick! Made playoffs all 5 years! 21) Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton-Forget the stats, he was our first center and first black knick! Look him up. 22) Michael Ray Richardson: Might have been better than Magic johnson! First player to ever lead league in assits and steals. 23) Jumpin Johnny Green-3 time knick allstar! 24) Tie- Bill Cartwight/Walt Bellamy/Tyson Chandler: First Knick DPOY! 25) Tie- Melo, Mcadoo and AMare: The starphuchers with great stats but nothing accomplished with no meaningful games. All star players and high volume scorers who have small samples. Melo should move up the latter into the top 15 with a few seasons and a deep run or two in the playoffs. Him and Amare have yet to have a defining knick moment. Honorable mention: Mase, Derek Harper, Maurice Cheeks, Phil Jax, Marcus Camby, Charlie Ward, Dean Meminger, Chris Childs, Cazzie Russell, Howard Komives, DLee, Xavier Daniels, John Gionelli, and Linsanity. We think them for contributions as role players or providing thrills over the years! |
