it helped that the knicks were struggling, and he had an interesting story. outside of that, its hard to say. jordan became the most known player in my lifetime playing in chicago... not sure the ny stage is as critical as i think it used to be. so many media outlets, internet, 24 hour sports news...

I think would have a been a great story regardless bigger because it happened NY. It was the perfect time and place. It still would have been all over the news but I don't think it woul have been as big has it happened in a place like Cleveland or Sacremento.

plus, is he that popular to fans of other teams? ny fans may miss the kid, do fans in orl, bos, la, phx, okc, etc really care? probably not.

I don't think so. Plus NYC has the largest Chinese population in the country.

No way- Dragic on the rockets and Isaiah Thomas on the Kings also had break out seasons with very similar stats, but got a fraction of the media exposure. Lin got the perfect opportunity with us- our situation, coach, timing of injuries and media attention. Would never have happened elsewhere.

I don't think it would have been as big, but it would've still been a great story. We love to see someone who has been underestimated take advantage of an opportunity and surpass everyone's expectations. It was like a movie.

That movie is now over. All things must pass.

At least any other team wouldn't have said they'll match a gazillion dollar contract

You mean the way that the Rockets resigned Dragic?

Linsanity could have easily happened in LA. But that's he only other market I can think of.

Not true. Lin put up an all star PER AND set all kinds of records for the first 9 (or 25?) starts in a career.
Further, Lin did much more with much less than Dragic did. Lin clearly made his teamates better, Dragic nada.

No matter where Lin had gone, the numbers and records he put up (which are now his), would have been noted. He wouldn't have been as big, but he sure would have been noticed. What the kid did was incredible and I saw it with my own eyes. The Stats just back it up is all. Where as watching Dragic, who looked great, he just didn't turn that team around like Lin did.

I see this another Lin thread as a testament that Papa Bear will not forget Lin in the near future. Such is the legacy of Linsanity.

I've said it before and others have said it before. Lin's story is more than just about basketball. His story is about perseverance against all odds. Keeping sight of your dream no matter what people throw at you, no matter how bleak the outlook are. This is why he became popular. If you do not know why by now, you will never understand. Sure, Asians can relate to him but you have to understand that even in Europe he became popular. Linsanity was a global phenomenon. Even people who never followed basketball suddenly became interested.

It was the media who blew him up. It was a nice story. And you must remember he was under the radar. Now everyone will be on him so he better watch thoes turnovers. I also like the John Starks story better. Starks was totally out of the league packing grocery's. At least Starks have year's under his belt.

Is he really getting offered $25 mil from ANY TEAM if he plays those 25 games in Cleveland or with the Wizards? Is Volvo and his other two sponsors lining up for a piece of the action? Does the world care or pay attention if someone excels in those markets?

Be serious.
