True but the stock is still trading at $6 higher from when Lin started playing. The stock is only $3 less per share at the height of Linsanity. Have to love the media spin though.

I wouldnt read too much into it--the move has been made on very low volume and MSG stock was sitting near 52 week highs after a big rub this year. Is it a conduit to drop some market cap--perhaps but it likely couldve happened anyway.

Maybe u can explain this to me..I know u were pro Dolan matching Houston's offer...Why do u think it's ok to ask Dolan to take a cap hit in the third year upwards of 35/40 mil or whatever the number is..Why is it ok to expect Dolan to take that hit???

he has paid silly tax bills for much worse teams in the past. doesnt mean he should now, however if you thought the kid could have helped... also, the tax bill is speculative. potential roster moves could alter it, and its also possible he will be paying a tax bill anyway.

So as a fan it doesn't matter..He has paid it in the past, so he shouldn't stop now..40/50 mil in the third year not a problem because he would have to pay some tax already?..Or he could trade maybe Amare before that happens??

tell me this - as a fan, why do you care about the cap hit? i don't understand fans who worry about the money side. it's not your responsibility at all.

also, that question implies the lin decision was ever about money. i don't think it was. in this thread people are talking about the stock market implications of losing the kid. dolan will lose many times the amount he would have paid lin before the 3yr deal is out.

once again, dolan is an idiot who didn't make his own fortune. but it's nice of you to worry about his money for him. it's more consideration than he would show you.

Its not that we have to care about the money side, but when evaluating the situation, you have to take it into account.

One aspect nobody is mentioning is the fact Dolan is paying some, if not all, of the Garden renovations, which probably had some relevancy when considering all the extra tax money he would have to pay.

Wish we had matched and Lin continued his story with us, but I can understand this decision, whether I like it or not, from a business and money side. If other aspects were also involved in the decision, its hard to tell for sure, but money-wise I understand why they wouldn't take the risk.

Well stocks go up and down for many reasons and usually in sympathy of the general market direction and also people are taking profit given its at it's all time highs..But that said, I try to approach things from a realistic point of view to explain certain people's actions and thought process...So I ask myself who in their right mind would sign an unproven player in Lin when it could possibly cost them upwards of 50 mil in a single season??..I just wonder if some look at it from this point of view, that's all...

fair enough about being realistic.

though it bugs me that people act like lin is what will cost the team the luxury tax - if you trade amar'e in year 3 the team wouldn't pay the tax at all. that makes it a pretty loaded statement to say lin would cost $50M. the tax is on the whole roster, not just lin. is not signing lin the easiest way to avoid the tax? i guess so. shrugs.

i stated it doesnt mean he should pay it now. the main point is the tax bill due 3 years from now is not as set in stone as is being reported. by year three, this team may have already begun the dismantling process if they do not meet the FO's goals, so that could mean amare, chandler, etc may be gone (attempts to tear down start after year 2).

three years (or seasons if you prefer), it is all speculative: roster moves, the cap/tax line, results for the team the next two years that will influence the prior two items... they may do quite well and there will be zero changes...

I been saying this for the past two weeks, the Knicks would have to pay the tax for been over the Cap, not necesarily for signing Lin. Considering that our main three guys will account for more than 60 million in 3 years, even without Lin, I still think they will pay the tax for the acquisitions they just did this summer (Felton, Kidd, Camby, resigning Novak).
If the Knicks TRUELY wanted Lin, they should have taken care of him first, and than fillout the rest of the team with less expensive veteran players.

That's what a smart owner would have done but since Lin didn't fit in Melos "family circle" he had to go. Unbelievable!!!
