STAT's team that handles his training regimen and schedule said that since the first week of June, the power forward has been involved with a offseason workout program in the Los Angeles area, doing two-a-days. In the morning, he meets with a physical therapist to strengthen his lower back, where he suffered a bulging disk in March. A rep for Stoudemire said his back is "doing great."

Then in the afternoon, Stoudemire works with a conditioning coach focusing a lot on cardio, core development and hip movement in order to ensure that part of his body is quicker and stronger for defensive maneuvering and positioning. That's arguably his biggest deficiency, which is why the defensive-minded Mike Woodson wants him to improve in that area, so he can be more consistent making stops.

As long as he doesn't gain 20 pounds of muscle and grow another inch like last offseason.

Glad to hear it. Too often on D Stat looks like he is walking on stilts. Hopefully he will have a little more mobility next season.

I use to pay attention to offseason workout articles hoping guys in the roster are doing all they can to improve ..Over the years I have been disappointed with what many have said they were doing in the offseason ...Tell u what. STAT is a big boy, let's see how he looks come Oct./Nov..

Not all about looks, he's going to be working with Hakeem on post moves as well.

Stat is extremely image conscience, hopefully that will drive him to work harder and come in much better this season.

good... too bad the season comes down to guard play, but this is good. Amare and Felton were a money combo once they got it going. Having some chemistry right out of the gate will be huge.

Shame on Knick fans for bashing STAT's commitment to get better. This guy has been a BEAST for most of his career and come back multiple times from injury to eventually get to All Star Level. I've been critical of STAT for his lack of Defense, but if he's legitimately working on improving his body so that he's not the stiff guy who has obviously been playing hurt for a while, then GREAT!!! He's not some over the hill guy. He's still young enough for his body to respond and get better if he's doing the right kind of work.

DUDE went thru a lot last year and it started with the back injury in the Celtics Series. I like that he's trimming down and loosening up so that he's not some stiff muscle head, but a more flexible BB player. Sometimes you lose your way in trying different training and have to go in another direction. I'm looking forward to a better STAT next year and to be honest we REALLY NEED STAT to be better. If he comes back with a better body and some post moves, STAT can push this team over the top. Let's not forget what a healthy and motivated STAT is capable of. I'm done with hating on our Star players. We need all of these guys to be in a great mental and physical state. So far it seems like everyone is working hard and that's a good thing.

Excellent point.

Imagine the fun with Amar'e banging against Kurt Thomas in practice. If that does not develop his defensive intensity, nothing will.

Forward.

If ole "Crazy Eyes" can't make Amare work harder in practice, then no one can.

Are we still caring about these offseason "working hard" reports?
Really?! After Eddy Curry's offseason of losing all that weight and JSkinny developing a jumper? Come on.

Hilarious

Jeffries would take the charge and flop on his back.

Kurt Thomas will thump anyone driving inside, stand over them and dare them to get up.

I certainly hope Stat is back next year and fully recovered. We need him at full strength. He and Melo should be practicing and training together once the Olympics are over so they can develop chemistry.

Glad he is working out instead of sitting front row at fashion shows and producing Albums like last off season. No wonder he was terrible all year

I don't get excited about the 'ol working hard bit anymore. He worked hard to gain 20 lbs and grow an inch last year and had one of his worst pro seasons. I believe in his ability to have a great bounce back year, but it better include boxing out, playing D and getting his J to fall again.
