Another one: I am a true Knicks fan.

I don't remember creating a thread but couldn't resist it this time.

What's with the holier-than-thou attitude? Do these declarations really mean anything other than maybe you were born earlier than others? Or maybe some did not just bother to register years ago?

This is the internet. Nobody knows if you are telling the truth. For all we know you could be a 13 year old.

It separates us from the newbie Linsaniacs. Who, for the most part, are gone now anyway.

Plus, I would imagine 13 year olds have got to have better things to do on the internet than post here about being 40 or 50 years old.

I've been a Knicks fan for about 30 years. NYK forever, as far as I am concerned.

To be a True Fan isn't being holier than thou- it means that you are NOT a fickle type that wavers on your loyalty to your team. Oddly enough, but I've observed that one's "team loyalty" as a fan usually paralells their quality of character as a person. Those who claim to back a specific team, only to go turncoat, are often the same people who will sell friends out the same way. Those who are loyal fans are loyal friends, and loyal, trustworthy people in general.

A true fan won't go turncoat on their team for anything. That is the difference between a True Fan and a fake fan / fair-weather fan / bandwagon rider.

True Fans are the ones who are so loyal, that no matter how badly their team may be, no matter how long it's been since they won a championship, they will STILL root as hard as ever for that team and fiercely defend theri team against any and all haters. Many True Fans can be the harshest of critics, only because they want to see their team prosper.

When speaking/discussing/debating among other true fans of the same team, the in-house criticism and friendly fire can get to the point where some may sound like haters, but the difference between haters and heavy critics is that heavy critics criticize out of love for their team, while haters enjoy tearing the team down and couldn't care less about that team.

When you stand by your team through dark years, it'll be that much sweeter when that team eventually wins. Yes, that can be a little (or very) masochistic at times, but that's all part of being a true/real fan. Only weak-minded fake fans who never sincerely backed their team would "leave" and switch allegiances to another team just because that team is doing better or recently won a title.

Real Fans usually want nothing to do with bandwagon riders, and generally have no respect for them, either. I find it fun to verbally kick bandwagon riders in the teeth, though. They always have something sassy to say about the Knicks, and they usually calm down real quick once they get clowned out. It's easy to do, as long as the True Knicks fan isn't too heavily outnumbered by fake fans and wagon riders.

To all of the REAL FANS / TRUE FANS, back your teams to the fullest, whether you are a Knicks fan or otherwise. You will be in agreement with this, and you should rejoice along with other REAL FANS! You know your alignment. Being a REAL FAN is something to be proud of!

If anyone gets "offended" by this, then you also know your alignment. Get mad until your head explodes- you're a FAKE FAN!

On behalf of all Real Knicks Fans who have that undying loyalty to their team,

GO KNICKS!

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

I grew up in New Jersey, but became a Knicks fan during the 90s with Ewing and Co. Maybe I jumped on a bandwagon then? Nets were never on NBA on NBC or hardly in the playoffs, which was my main method of watching basketball. But the blue and orange, the hard nose defense, a big 7 foot Jamaican sweating buckets... I loved those teams and hated the Bulls and Mount Jordan which we never seemed able to climb, and anyone who grew up in the tri-state who was a fan of them: ewww. They might as well just said: Nike or Team Jordan is my favorite team. Seemed so corny.

But once I joined the bandwagon, I couldn't get off, even as I get older and more jaded, and learned more about our not-so-storied history and laughable front office. David Lee and that money mid-range shot he eventually developed really gave me joy for a while there. David Lee! Those were the days when you'd get clowned for wearing Knicks gear IN NEW YORK! One game night during the winter of 2011 I went into Brother Jimmy's right by the Garden and they didn't even have the game on. I had to ask them to turn one TV to it.

How many conversations have we had that went like:

Hater: "You a Knicks fan? You still support those fools? They suck!"
Me: "I know... I know... who is your team?"
Hater: "Oh man, I mean I used to like the Knicks... I'm just into the players now. I'm all about my boy Iverson (Kobe, Melo (pre-trade), Lebron or whoever else).
Me: "Oh word?" (while shaking my head, ever so subtly.)

I mean I can see the logic, but that person immediately lost some respect for me. All the people in MSG cheering louder for the opposing team... embarrassing.

Same with the Mets: became a fan in '85 when no one was talking about the Yankees. Suddenly in the 90s all these former Mets fans are Yankees fans. Maybe I joined a bandwagon, but I can't see jumping off. The bandwagon is now my camper van, and I've laid my head there so many cold, lonely nights that it's home.

Every now and then when I'm wearing my Knicks cap, I'll strike up a conversation with another fellow traveler and talk about my beloved Knicks. It's like a fraternity:

Me: "Yo how you think we are gonna do this year?"
Fan: "I don't know man, you see that Bucks game?"
Me: "Yea man, they have our number... we gotta get 4 out the next 5 games..."
Fan: "From your mouth to God's ears, brother! Go Knicks!"

These too rare conversations make up for all that other bull****.

I guess Ive been a fan since the late 90's, but I hardly watched basketball then, really got into it around 03. Dont ask why but I chose NY over NJ...just in time for starbury. Damn, could've been watching Kidd all those years.

I am a die hard knicks fan. If Melo , Amare, and Chandler, and Lin left the knicks today I would be disappointed but that would not change my feelings and loyalty towards the knicks. Hey I would be pissed off aahhhh mad yelling. But at the end of the day I'm still a Knicks fan.

Wow, a fan since only 10 years after the creation of the game and only about a 1/2 century before the Knicks were formed. What a real fan!

Wiseass.

For me being a die hard fan is something I can't change. It's not just words. I could never switch allegiances even if I wanted to because I would have the nets game on but be thinking about what the NYK score was. It would never sit well with me even if all my favorite players went to the nets or whoever and won it all every year. I will always be a NYK fan.

We Rode The Subway From Queens

My Dad and I on the E Train.

First professional basketball game.

Old Madison Square Garden.

An usher in the upper deck, with a small tip, allowed us to slide down a few rows in the upper deck.

San Francisco Warriors with Wilt Chamberlain and a crafty point guard Guy Rodgers.

The game is a blur.

All I remember is the place got loud in the second half.

After the game we had a hot dog on the street.

Dad always got onions and mustard.

I had relish.

I was hooked.

I became a raving Knicks lunatic in the late 80's and have been a die hard ever since. Stating how long you've been a fan is not to have a holier than thou attitude...it's more of the team has been ripping my heart out since I was a little kid so if you think things are bad now I can tell you a few things. Whereas some here watched Clyde & Monroe and the Knicks attain glory, others like myself have been dealing with crap draft picks, heart breaking loses and terrible trades for the a long time.

I wear my Knicks torment like a badge of honor. One day they're going to win and when they do all the years of heart ache will be well worth it. The Giants won the SB when I was a kid, the Yanks finally got me a chip when I was in college and went on an amazing run. The damn Knicks are going to do the same for me one day and it will be well worth the heartache as well as the liver damage.

...I was a Zygote.

Rooting for Rory Sparrow, Louis Orr, Eddie Lee Wilkins, Pat Cummings, and Kenny "Sky" Walker.

Watching the NY Twin Towers of Bill Cartwright and Patrick Ewing.

Witnessing the ease that Bernard King put the ball in the hole.

From the womb to the tomb, baby.

Phuck the Brooklyn Nets! (No offense to any Brooklyn-ites)

Im first generation American. Parents straight off the boat in 79. First thing my dad and I ever really got into together was Knicks basketball. Not having any sense of how hard it was to get tix to a game, we finally decided to go to the Garden in April '92 (I was 10) figuring we could just get tix at the box office. And oh yea, it was a Sunday matinee against Jordan's Bulls.

After getting laughed at in the box office we made 3 laps outside looking for scalpers. Couldn't find anyone at all with tix. We were about to give up when someone spotted us and said 2 friends couldn't make it and sold us his center court seats for face value.

Crowd was insane, action was great, Jordan was mesmerizing, Knicks win. I've been tortured with them ever since.

I tell you, it wasn't easy being a fan back then. Other then the occasional matinee game on ABC, I never got to see any games unless we made the playoffs. Sadly, to this day, I have still never seen a game in person.
I've been a Knicks fan since....
