Papabear Says

Greg Oden has decided he doesn't want to sit out the entire 12-13 NBA season as he previously stated in an May interview.

Oden called his agent Mike Conley and that he wants to play.

“(Oden) called me, and he was kind of excited,’’ Conley said Thursday. “I think he’s motivated …. He wants to play. He had said he wanted to take this season off, but he’s backed off from that …. He’s open to playing this season. I think he will play this season.’’

Oden has had five surgeries on his knees since entering the NBA.

“He’s starting to work out,’’ Conley said of Oden, who was recently cleared for workouts, feeling better about his situation. “He’s excited. You can tell he’s getting antsy. At the end of the day, I want him to finish out his NBA career. He’s still pretty young (24).’’

Conley said he has not heard from the Miami Heat at all since Oden was waived. But he said Oden has interest in the Heat if they ever were to be interested.

“Obviously, if the Heat wanted him, who wouldn’t want to play for the Heat?’’ Conley said of the defending champions. “That goes without saying. They have roster spots and a need (at center). But it’s too early to say about where he might play.’’

Conley expects Oden to find a contract.

“He’s going to sign somewhere,’’ Conley said. “He’s going to get healthy and be coming back.’’

I'm not sure he's actually ready to play this year. I still think he has the talent to do something long range- not sure he has the desire to overcome all his injuries. He's worth the flyer for someone, but with our roster now, maybe not us.

I think we should have 2 prospects to develop with the veterans we have, it would make sense.
But Oden probably wouldn't be able to contribute at all, this season.
I wouldn't be against it, if he was one of these "prospects"

I would agree, to the same exact deal, 1 year guaranteed and 1 year team option.

We already have Chandler with Camby backing him up.

IMO, we need to shore up our bench with players who aren't as injury-prone as Oden. If anything, last season's Baron Davis experiment should have been enough of a lesson regarding that.

We can do better. Let the Nets or some other team gamble on Oden and lose.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

Would definitely take a chance on him. But I think he's going to get more than veteran's minimum.

i'd take a gamble on oden any day of the week. prefereablly as crush said, 1yr/TO for the 2nd year but i'd even go as far as giving him 2 yrs guarenteed to lock him up. it's truly the definition of a high-risk/high-reward type of deal. oden has all the talent in the world, if he stays healthy, he'll be a beast.

He was amnestied, right? So there's no reason for anyone to pay him more than the vet's minimum, because his previous team is paying his salary. I'd definitely give him a shot.

I think the Blazers just didn't extend after he got injured. No one is paying him now.

You guys know there's only room for 15 players, right? Whenever someone interesting comes along, everyone here says they'd give the player a vet min contract. We'd have 25 players under contract by now.

You're always looking at the big picture Bonn.

You'd be a good locker room presence, we should give you a vet min contract.

A team with cap room will almost certainly offer more then us. Why not they need to have a min anyway

LOL! I would LOVE that! 7 figure salary to hang around the locker room.

I have no interest... and I'm sure he has no interest. Oden would take a veteran minimum contract if and only if he has a chance to actually play and earn a bigger deal afterwards. Miami would be perfect for him. I'd call them undersized and it would make a lot of sense for him to try and showcase his goods there. He'd get playing time... it isn't like Eddy Curry is going to take away playing time from him

That would be a great and frightening gamble for Miami to take damn. No pressure on Oden whatsoever to be the guy again
