I always get excited for the draft as long as we have a pick, whether its 1st or just 2nd round. Given the last couple of years, it is very obvious we can find a rotation player with the 48th pick. What do you think it would take to identify a rotation player in the 2nd round?

I believe we need to accept that we won't find a star, but need to focus on finding a quality role player. In order to find that, we need to draft a player who has an elite skill. It's also safe to say you should pick a 3 or 4-year college player, because they tend to get undervalued for lack of upside. Finding undervalued, elite-skilled players is the key. Here are a few players who i think meet the majority of criteria:

1. Jae Crowder-Elite defender, good motor, improving shooter. Undervalued because he's a senior and undersized. No true position. Could become poor-man's Kawhi Leonard.
2. William Buford-Good shooter and passer, but lacks upside. No reason he can't become a Gary Neal-type.
3. Hollis Thompson-Elite shooter, good athlete. Undervalued for lack of production and improvement. Reminds me of Dorrell Wright.
4. Scott Machado-pure pg with elite playmaking skills-undervalued because of coming from a small program. Could be great backup pg.
5. Bernard James-NBA ready elite defensive presence. Undervalued due to being 27 years old. Could be good backup pf/c.

These are just 5 players very capable of being rotation players right away because they have at least 1 NBA ready skill. Those are the types of guys we need to target in the second round.

Gotcha.

So here's my thoughts:

Crowder: I think he's undersized. It works for Faried in Denver, but don't think that works here.
Buford: You hit the name on the head: not enough upside for us. He won't become Neal here, he'll become Douglas without the 3pt potential.
Thompson: I like him, but English would be better, and resigning JR means we don't need him, especially if Fields stays at the 2.
Machado: OK, but I think we need a vet at the point. Lin needs to learn, no need to invest in a young PG. (I say Delonte West instead if it's on the cheap)
James: Don't know enough about him. but the age worries me.

Thoughts on Quincy Acy? Wesley Witherspoon?

I like Acy, but not sure what he does real well. You can never have enough shooters, which is why i love Thompson. Could easily become a very solid backup SG/SF.

Haha, not directly. He's worth the $$ and has experience, so we wouldn't need to invest too much time and effort into him. He'd do the job and allow the team to focus on Lin's growth. Of course, the more expensive options of Kidd or Miller would be situations where they could help guide his play.

Looking into Acy a little more, although undersized he is a great athlete. Could be a 12-15 mpg energy guy who can mix it up.

I did the same with James. His back-story is great, shows maturity.
Basketball wise, his shot blocking seems to be the key to his success. Apparently he has great timing defensively around the basket. While awesome, not as important as man-to-man post defense for the Knicks I think.

Thanks for the reminder as I was thinking it was weeks away! LOL

I agree, it's a really fun time. Too bad we don't have a first but someone good should fall to us.

My advice, don't. The draft is the most exciting night of the year in basketball in my opinion. I think the Knicks will somehow get another pick. With Smith being able to be resigned and Foye interested the Knicks might move Fields. I think Jorts, and Jordan are probably in play for moves as well. There are some guys dropping that should be very productive players. Also, it will be interesting to see how the crowd responds to Stern this year. It hasn't been a good year for him and his an arrogant, unlikeable guy on a good year.

Skipping it. Hope they pick a good one but it is ok if they don't this year.

Maybe the knicks can trade fields and move into the 30s and find a diamond in the rough. Maybe to Golden st @30. Fields go back home to Cali

Fields is a restricted free agent and can't be traded.

Knicks have the option to trade him. As a young player at the end of his first deal he has no options. The restricted part is just to help the knicks not lose bim to another team if he was any good. Since they drafted him and have his bird rights

You can't trade free agents; Landry would have to agree to a sign and trade in order for us to trade him.

I suppose as long as Landry agrees to a sign and trade.

I think the scenario in that article is more likely; we have some players with unguaranteed contracts next year and we could trade one or two of them for a late first/early second.
