As assembled, with the core pieces of Melo, Stat and Chandler- the three players that take up 5/6th of our cap, can we win a championship?
Yes, Melo & Stat are awesome
No
Maybe yes, but one of those core pieces will have to be traded

No, but we won't after this latest starphuck because Dolan will find some newburies to replace the current ones with.

I've come to the realization that we won't. Melo is a really, really, really good player. But he isn't great. And you need great.

Stat, even if healthy and fitting in, simply has too many holes in his game. A power forward allergic to rebounds and defense? That is the antithesis of an NBA power forward.

Chandler, with or without post moves, is the one player you could build around- he's already proven to be a major contributor to an NBA Champion, and has himself won Defensive Player of the year honors.

And I don't see Melo or Stat being packaged for value back that brings in a championship talent.

I consider Lin and Tyson part of the core group as well.

Yes, if they can get their act together, be determined about it and like Silverfuel said, if they can stay healthy. That'd be perfect.

Lin- the person not under contract whom we might not resign this summer? OK!

I'd include him and Shup as well, but they aren't part of a 'big three', but both showed signs of being stars.

And I think that is the only chance we have at a championship - that Lin turns into Nash-lite, with 15 & 7 type numbers, and Shup turns into a Sprewell lite - with similar 16+ & 2 steals per game.

I think coaching is the reason they will never win a championship.

There were very few times this season when Stat and Melo worked together, set each other up. Its hard to understand why the two best players on the team aren't in better synch. I believe its more than just their games not meshing, it doesn't look like they are even trying to. That's why we need a PG who can bridge the gap. Lin could be the guy but I don't want for the Knicks to go all in on Lin. He needs help anyway and Jeremy still has to develop as a PG. He's not there yet.

I wish they could find a taker for Stat's contract but that probably wouldn't happen unless Stat came back and played like he did his first year as a Knick. Or as others have pointed out, we could take back someone else's bad contract. If this player meshed with Melo it might not be a bad thing. Depends on their health, the length of the contract, and wether or not they are a team player.

I love the Knicks - I have been a fan since I was a kid, stuck through some of the hardest years to be a fan (Layden/Isiah), and I still love this team.

However, I do not believe we are on the path to win a title with our current group of guys. I think it may be possible with a different supporting cast, but financially our hands are tied and I don't see us being able to make the moves necessary to win with such a short window of opportunity.

I would love nothing more than to see this team hoist a banner to the rafters at MSG, but its a long shot.

Not with 2012 Amar'e. And as much as I love Melo, he doesn't bring it every night. LeBron, for as much crap as he gets, always brings everythign he has. Same with guys like Parker, Ginobli, Kobe, Rose, etc. We have a tiny window and all 3 stars need major improvements (Tyson need A move...at least one). Don't know if there's enough time. Hope like hell I'm wrong. I really thought Melo could be the guy. Still not impossible.

They couldn't win it all with a franchise center, Charles Oakley, John Starks, Pat Riley, and a stingy defense

So what do you think?

Title?

"best in revenue"?

yeah, we can win that!

Its not really about winning a title, its about the hope of one.

Here is my nightmare:

Knicks win a championship. The management team of Grunny, Gabriel, Warkenwinkydink, and coaches are all mute while mr horse teeth Dolan is getting the trophy. And he thanks Isiah.

ANd then I need a shower.

Yes the core of Melo, Stoudemire, Chandler, and Lin can win us a title. If last year's Mavs and this years Spurs have taught us anything, it's all about the bargain bin role players you can find to support them.

if the rest of the team is healthy and we get a decent PG with Lin, yes!

I voted yes not because Melo and stat are awesome but because the pieces are there, when healthy, to compete on a level with any other team.
