Was talking with a friend who goes back with me along time. We were in Jr high when the best starphuch in NYC history was doing his thing.

We rooted for him to get 40 each nite and we won 2 championships in the 3 years he was in NYC.

We talking Dr. J. We talking the ABA and there was only 8 teams left in that final season.

But, on that spring nite in 1976 down 20 pts against the hate Nuggets coached by Larry Brown a full house of 16,000 fans went crazy cheering their team. We were not thinking about the knicks or the pending merger (unknown at that point), we were thinking how great it was to have the most exciting player in professional basketball right in front of us.

We actually used to laugh an say how great it would be if DR J was actually a Knick in MSG. Little did we know that the OWner of the nets did not have the money to gain entry to the NBA and had to pay the knicks like 6 million. They offered DR J but the knicks wanted the money. Philly offered the money. This was pre dolan of course.

My point. Starphuching can work but in time you gotta deliver. Dr. J's first year in NY yielded a championship. He was just 23 and was already in the league 3 years.

Our conversation went onto the move to Brooklyn and we both thought it was cool. Discussed Reports of Deron likley staying in NY. We discussed what a dick knick fans thought Deron was but we came across some parallels:

1. Deron had friction with his coach (Sloan) as did Melo with Karl. Melo basically **** on MDA so we think Melo is the bigger dick.

2. Deron is a net and knick fans have him pegged like Jason Kidd. Melo and JR Smith punked the knicks as a Nugg. We don't recall Deron doing this. KNick fans fawned all over Melo as a savior but many of us did not like Melo prevously. We are trying.

We discussed if the knicks were genuine in their persuit of being a champion or just trying to fulfil a successful model of being an entertainment company that makes its shareholders money. WE decided if we were shareholders (I have been and made some decent money on the stock)that profitabilty is the priority. As a fan of the team, we think it should be a passion and profits should be born from success. we don't think MSG does this.

We both agreed that we are long time NY basketball fans and like the Brooklyn vibe the team might be reaching for. I asked him what it would take to transfer his loyalty to the Nets and we both agreed it would be hard to do and take years to accomplish but the knicks are volunerable in our opinion because they starphuch instead of building.

We don't love the current direction of the Nets but if they can retain Wallace and Williams, keep Bropez and Brooks and add some pieces it might not be so bad the first year. We all know whats on paper and what is on the court does not always correlate. Maybe bring in MDA would be great point of interest for Nets!

It would be very hard to like the nets if they get Kevin Garnett I bought up. Then he reminded me what we all thought of Melo before he was traded here. If nets do well he'd win over the causual fan first.

Winning cures all. StarMelo can achieve love in NYC by winning. So can Deron.

It will be an interesting summer for shure!

Dwight still looms.

Just curious, do yankee fans root AGAINST the mets if they make the playoffs and the Yankees don't?

Go Giant fans root AGAINST the Jets if they advance further?

Can a Knick fans still keep an interest and even root for the Brooklyn team should the knicks be eliminated but the Nets advance?

I Like when NY teams do well. Its fun for everyone. I don't root against any NY team.

I love a Subway series and would love an all NY Superbowl.

I would love a NY conf. finals between Knicks and Nets!

We both agree that for some strange reason the rebranding of the team and our nostalga from the ABA erases the 35 years the team was in Jersey. We both agreed that we loved our red-white-blue basketballs back in the day.......

nothing to debate. they will be the clippers and since I hate Brooklyn in general, I get to continue to hate the Nets in good faith.

What about Jets vs. Giants? mets vs. yanks?

While you maybe a fan of one, so you root AGAINST or just go with it and happy if a NY teams wins?

Would you root for the Texas Rangers to win a world series over the mets?

if the Brooklyn Natz won a championship it would mean nothing to me. I likely wouldn't watch the games and they wouldn't even be on my radar so to speak. Same thing goes for when the Yankees win (me being a Mets fan). I have a team in each sport (except hockey) and I stick with those teams. My dad took me to Mets games which, is how I became a fan and the same goes for the Knicks.

So to answer your question no, I wouldn't bet on the Rangers no matter who they were playing.

I actually take this question/theory very seriously, and have been contemplating it now that they are right in our backyard.

Growing up in the 80s I gravitated towards the underdogs, at the time, the yankees and the jets. Since the Knicks were the only "NY" team, of course I rooted for them.

As a diehard Jets fan, I have one feeling about the Giants, I despise them, I actively root against them no matter what, in fact I rooted for the Patriots in the Super Bowl(s). I get a ton of flack for that from everyone and I understand, but originally in 2008 it was because the Patriots were clearly the best team in the NFL, had won three Super Bowls already, and who cares if they win another, it's not in my face, and I don't have to walk around everywhere seeing Giants fans so deliriously happy about their title win. This past year, I couldn't stand the fact that Giant fans think that every few years, they get gifted a Super Bowl victory when they barely make the playoffs. Ughh makes me steam just thinking about, in fact I think Linsanity was a gift for all the Jet/Knicks fans out there who didn't want to see the Giants on the backpage for 2 weeks. And yes, I am very much aware with how bitter/jealous I am on this topic.

When the Yankees were going through that awful Stump Merrill, Dallas Green stretch I would actively root against the Mets, but as the Yanks piled on the rings, I felt bad for my friends who were Mets fans, and understood the allure of rooting for the underdog, and my stance on the Mutts has softened considerably over the years, where I'm happy if they do well, because most Mets fans are generally knowledgeble (long suffering like us Knicks/Jets fans) and overall much less abrasive than your average Yankee fan.

As for the Nets, I've never felt that hatred, maybe it had to do with Drazen Petrovic, or that we never were really good at the same time. If you are an NBA fan, the Jason Kidd era was really fun to watch. Or that just like Yankees/Giants fans, the Nets seem like your plucky younger brother, and as long as they don't disrupt our goals of winning a ring, if they succeed good for them. So for now, I'm going to lump them in the "Good for you" camp. Now if they end up getting Dwight Howard, that's another story...

I loosely follow the nets....they used to be on channel 9 back in the day. I remember Alot if bad Trans they had. They had two of my favorite teams throughout the years with Derrick Coleman and Kenny Anderson and drazen....then Jayson Williams,.kittles, Kendall gill, Sam Cassell and those guy.....

they have Brooklyn on the chest and I'm from there so I will follow. If they get good they will be like the Mets are to me....I will be happy they Won but would be hurting for my knicks to finality win something

Good take and thank you for participating. I have not lived in NY for 25 years but Im a fan of teams it seems. Growing up Nets were ABA, Knicks NBA so no real conflict. NBA nets for the most part sucked and they were Jersey's. They never really got in the Knicks way.

Giants NFC, Jets AFC and rare they ever crossed paths. Same for Yanks-Mets.

Since your being honest do you hate the Giants out of envy? They do seem a bit lucky from time to time.

Back in the day before my time, and before massive expansion we had three Baseball teams in NYC. Giants in Manhatten, Yanks in Bronx and Dodgers. Not many teams so I get why the love for some and hate for others.

I could never root for a Boston team over a NY team. In fact, I could never root for any team over a NY team. The Devils are a jersey team. There was once a great 5 year Islander run that was amazing. But they and the rangers never seem to have it together at the same time.

Just me.

I get the Hate on the Nets and perhaps rebranding is not going to resonate with many die hard knick fans.

The Nets IN jersey was never right in my head. They belonged on Long Island. The Brooklyn thing is cool.

The Causual fan will gravitate to the better teamand the one who wins first.

We have a whole generation of basketball fans in NY that don't have the attachement of a championship team. Knicks have not won in almost 40 years and we going on 20 since they were in the finals. Many of you got to be fans in the Ewing era.

The nets run to the finals were bland and the team lacked any marketing push.

Nets win a chip before the Knicks and the tides will turn. They will grab a whole generation. Jay Z and Prohkerov are much cooler than Dolan also!

I hate the NEW JERSEY nets. The only way id root semi root for them is if the nba was divided into two leagues like football and baseball. Cant root for a team in the same division as the knicks no matter how far removed from nj they are

totally off. I wouldn't know how they were doing unless I came across the scores in the Paper. I'm just not into a lot of teams but, I am die hard with those I do support.

I probably much more diverse basketball wise than I am with other sports. There are a few teams I will check at from time to time but, since the Dr.J sell, I have loathed Jersey.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Im most likely on this track.

ANd yeah, when they sold DR. J it broke my heart!

They did bring in Tiny Archibald who was a big time player in the league and worthy of a star attraction.

34 games in he blew out his knee. Nets won 20 games that year and then bolted for Jersey. Never went to Net game in New Jersey.

Selling DR. J was like RedSawx sellng Babe Ruth. Just not cool.

Dr. J at that moment in time was best attraction in basketball. The knicks so very phucked up by passing on him. Nets handed them a wrapped present in his prime.

The fact that they are taking on the name "Brooklyn" and not New York takes them out of the running to seriously compete with the NY Knicks. I can definitely see some Brooklynites converting over to the Nyets and supporting their borrough.

I'm from the Bronx and I could care less about Brooklyn, as many other residents of the Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, etc. The Nyets are not representing NY as whole, IMO, so to me its not the same as the NY Mets and NY Yankees.

Cant front. Eventhough I rep the Bronx, when this song came out, I was definitely in a Brooklyn state of mind....
