Knicks on the FM dial in a huge shift in NYC radio

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/7857507/espn-new-york-1050-moving-987-fm-dial

NEW YORK -- ESPN New York 1050 AM will be broadcast on 98.7 FM beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Monday morning, April 30, the station announced Thursday.

"This move to the FM dial is in keeping with the industry trend of sports radio shifting and offers an even broader reach for our content," said Dave Roberts, ESPN 1050 New York vice president and general manager. "By combining the FM reach with our wide variety of digital offerings from ESPN Audio, we are uniquely positioned to provide coverage of all of New York's sports."

"As part of ESPN's continual commitment to serve the U.S. Hispanic sports fan, we are thrilled to provide New York fans with a sports station that offers culturally relevant programming in Spanish," said Freddy Rolon, vice president of ESPN Deportes programming and business initiatives. "The launch of ESPN Deportes Radio will also provide advertisers and marketers a unique opportunity to reach local Hispanics sports fans in this market."

"Opportunities like this don't come along too often and it's tremendous that we were able to conclude a deal that will enhance our mission of serving sports fans in not just English but Spanish as well," said Traug Keller, ESPN senior vice president/production, business divisions. "Come fall, Spanish-speaking New Yorkers will have their first 24/7 sports talk radio station."

ESPN New York's regular weekday lineup also will be slightly altered, accompanying the change of frequency. "The Mike Lupica Show" will now be heard from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, followed by a new show from 1 to 3 p.m., hosted by Stephen A. Smith along with Ryan Ruocco.

ESPN Radio national shows "Mike & Mike in the Morning" and "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" will continue to be broadcast in New York, from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and 10 a.m. to noon, respectively. "The Michael Kay Show" will air from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Weekday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. will be handled by Dave Rothenberg.

Robin Lundberg will take over hosting duties for the weekend morning shows. Saturday mornings will also feature a new show from 10 a.m. to noon hosted by Patrick McEnroe, who will continue as a tennis commentator for ESPN.

am I the only one who thinks that's a good thing?

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

"WHEN 1050AM PUTS OUT A SIGNAL THAT ONLY DOGS AND CATS CAN HEAR"

I know that dog signal very well.
I remember a few years back when I had to listen to knicks games at night from right across the Hudson river in Newburgh. I wasn't in the boondocks either, I could literally see Beacon and Fishkill, but lame ass 1050 would turn down the broadcast near the end of the Micheal Kay Show. You tell exactly when they powered down, because that's when some 1960 music AM station would start breaking threw in the back round.

Nice to see 1050 finally stepping up there watt game.

1050 had some of the worst reception. Powerlines caused you to lose signal very hard to listen to them while riding to work. Good move on their part.

Yea I know every time I was in the piscataway/south plainfield area 1050 would lose signal completely. Going to be annoying now switching between fm and 660am

Biggest unfortunate thing about this move is going to be listening to that idiot Michael Kay with clarity. In which case I will turn back to WFAN.

Its actually a sad day for those of us he grew up listening to Hip Hop in the 80's and real R&B music. Kiss FM along with WBLS were the only stations that would play hip hop in the 80's. I remember listening and taping Chuck Chillout and Red Alert hip hop shows on Kiss late friday and saturday nights. Aftr a while, they stopped playing hip hop after Hot 97 emerged, but Kiss continued to play old school R&B, neo soul etc. Good for the Knicks, but I hate that it has to be in place of such an iconic radio station.

Back in the 90s I was into 92.3, 92.7, 97.1, 98.7, & 104.3... Good times..

It will be nice to finally hear the game on the radio called with some clarity though.

I can't believe it took them this many years to do this. Not being able to listen in south jersey has been brutal.

Haha, yes! I can't stand him. His voice annoys me especially when he gets himself all riled up. And he's such a name dropper, "I was having brunch with Joe Torre and he said blah blah blah". I could go on, but I can't stand listening to him.

Then there's that awful show on YES where he does a one on one interview. Gawd, gag me with a spoon. I remember hearing him once blab on and on about how he will single forever because of all the women who just flock to him. Christ, what a world we live in where that Cheez Doodle mother****er has groupies. Wtf.

AM is tough in the city too. A lot of devices with radios only have the FM band, and all the radio frequencies out there with mobile phones and WiFi makes AM pretty unusable up north in certain spots.

Kiss FM is a legendary station... I always think of the namecheck in ATCQ/LONS "Scenario". The big news in this story is hearing Inner City Broadcasting was bankrupt. I wonder what's up with WLIB.

Nice reference! 1992 "Scenario Remix", Charlie Brown of Leaders of the New School at the 2:43 mark

The return of talk to FM radio. Remember all those Spiro Gyra CD 101.9 commercials? That's now a news station.

I used to love 98.7 back in the day but honestly can't remember flipping to it any time in the last few years. Sports talk on FM is pretty common outside of NY. I'd be excited if it were WFAN going to FM. I don't listen to 1050 unless I'm stuck in the car and can't watch the game.
