Need to keep Carmelo at 4 use Amare as 6sixth man off the bench and find a reliable SF because Fields just cant seem to do it.

Find a quality back up C and PG retain Jefferies Lin and Novak

no way... its all about the backcourt. If Fields is here he will come off the bench. The future of this team is how good Lin/Shumpert can be. When Shumpert is really comfortable in this league and has a little more confidence and some more skills and savvy to go with his tremendous talent I think he can be the piece that makes the Knicks elite. He's the Tyson Chandler of the backcourt. Some days he will score a bunch, other days he will just have one of those 10 point, 5 rebs, 5 assist, 4 steals, 2 blocks type games.... but the bottom line is the Knicks are better when he's on the floor. When he's a smarter player (just needs some experiences) he wont have to work so hard to be as good as he currently is, and will have energy for other parts of his game.

Lin... what's his upside?

Also there is no way JR Smith is sticking around for 2.5mm

He's going to opt out and get the full MLE at the very minimum, and his play has shown he's worth it. He passes, defends, rebounds... does everything. Not just another chucker.

Next year will most likely be:
Melo sf
Amare pf
Chandler c
Shumpert sg
Lin pg

Fields will probably be gone in FA. The Knicks need to add a player like Odoms who can play Pf and sf. Hopefully they can add another pg who is younger. I hope that Smith doesn't come back need a more consistent shooter from SG position. Bring back Jefferies and Novak.

I would be interested in adding Odom to play backup forward. As long as his head is screwed on right.

I think Amar'e will be starting, but the Knicks have to plan as if he can only be a 25min per game player going forward.

He would be a perfect fit for what we need. Of course if his marbles are working.

I think we shouldn't thowaway this year just yet. I know we probably wont win the title but who knows maybe we get to the 6th. Or hey maybe we will silence the doubters and beat bulls/heat when we are actually healthy

BIG IF. I don't know if he'll be able to handle playing in New York.

If we get PJax, it's a no brainer. That's what he do.

Why? Knicks can match offers if he gets them...and I'm not sure how much he is going to command based on his play of late. The Knicks should be trying to keep every player they can seeing how FA signings will be tough with the limited amount of $$ that they can spend.

Right now Fields is only worth 2.5mm.

I think Odom is a nice bench player to add.

I also would like to add Shaun Livingson if the Bucks don't pick up his option.

my question is how can we sign all of the guys we want to keep with the $ we have?

i know with lin we have to use some/all of the mle, but does that apply to fields as well?

then what about novak and jeffries + this hypothetical odom signing (or another player)?

they will all have to take vet minimum contracts if we have nothing else to use after signing lin.

smith is a gonner, for sure. he's playing for a contract that he will get elsewhere, imho.

Knicks have MLE and LLE.

They also have Fields bird rights and Lins early bird rights.

I hoping that Lin doesn't take full Mle and the knicks can swing a trade for bit player to back up at point guard. I would trade Fields and TD for Shaun Livingston.

Right now Fields is only worth 2.5mm.

I think he is worth less: vet min for his experience, which is around $1M.

120% of his salary is .9 million........so even less to the knicks.

i can see fields going back out to cali if given the chance by another team. he'd fit well with the lakers or warriors off the bench.

personally - i wouldn't resign him. he doesn't shoot well enough to start at the two for us over shumpert (since amare is coming back and woodson has already said he'll start, so that slides melo back to the 3) and really he doesn't do a whole lot for us coming off the bench either, especially since he can't shoot or play above average defense. i'd keep our resources to resign smith, novak and jeffries.

The ideal team would have the same starting lineup we would sport if we were healthy (Lin, Shumpert, Melo, Amar'e & Tyson) along with a few additions:

Strong backup PF: Odom, if mentally stable, would be nice. Somebody that could easily step into the starting lineup if needed but strong option both defensively and offensively. How do you get him? MLE?

Strong and Young backup PG: Even if you chose to bring Baron Davis back, and I'm not sure I'd do that, you need a solid young backup point guard to organize the offense. Draft guy, maybe?

Strong scoring SG: Is J.R. the answer here? Can we find a way to keep him? I love the crazy guy but ideally I'd get a more stable player. Still, if its him, we'd be fine as we need scoring off the bench in the back court. Hopefully Shumpert will improve his offense next season and will be a solid contributor at SG.

Fields is basically Matt Barnes 2.0. There is value to that kind of player, but you don't want to break the bank for him.

I think our starting line up is set as long as we re-sign Lin. Hopefully we don't need to use the MLE for him and can target a veteran 6th man....Maybe Jason Terry if we can recruit him for the MLE. Smith is under contract unless he opts out, nothing we can do there, but I think he stays. Novak is going to be gone unfortunately unless he takes the veterans minimum....he's a good guy and I like him, but we just don't have the cap flexibility to re-sign him and someone will pay him more then the min. Odom could be a real possibility. Also, Sessions could opt out and we could look at him for the MLE
