Some liquid has leaked out of its pocket and is pressing a nerve. A long time of rest is ideal but the pro athlete can't have this, so surgery is required.

I guarantee Amar'e has surgery soon.

Stoudemire out indefinitely with back injury

Associated Press | March 26, 2012
NEW YORK -- Amare Stoudemire has a bulging disk in his back and is out indefinitely, a damaging blow to the New York Knicks with a month left in the regular season.

Stoudemire had an MRI exam Monday that revealed the injury. The Knicks say he doesn't need surgery and the injury will be treated with rehabilitation.

Point guard Jeremy Lin is also out for the Knicks against the Bucks because of a sore right knee, but Stoudemire's injury is the greater concern.

He was finally playing well recently after struggling earlier this season following a back injury in last season's playoffs. The Knicks currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

What is a Bulging Disk?

A bulging disk is a condition related to the spine, usually the lumbar, or lower back, that occurs when a disk bulges through a crevice in the spine. Disks are the soft, gelatinous material that cushions the vertebrae of the spine. A bulging disk occurs when the disk shifts out of its normal radius and most often occurs simply as a result of age.

A bulging disk is different from a herniated disk in that a bulging disk typically occurs gradually over time rather than suddenly. A herniated disk is often the result of an injury or trauma to the spine. In the majority of patients who experience a bulging disk, there is no pain unless the disk becomes herniated or protrudes into a nerve.

In many cases, a bulging disk may be diagnosed as a condition secondary to another problem. Because a bulging disk does not always cause pain, it may only be found during a routine or diagnostic imaging test such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Typically, a bulging disk is not a problem unless it begins to cause pain, becomes herniated or ruptures.

Treatment for a bulging disk or even a herniated disk is relatively conservative in most cases. Rest and lifting restrictions are common, and a doctor may recommend a combination of heat and ice therapy and anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone injections. Medication may be prescribed to deal with any associated pain.

Though usually a condition affecting the lower back, occasionally, a bulging disk may occur in the neck area. Usually, pain that radiates to the shoulders and arms indicates that a nerve in the neck may be pinched or pushed upon. In the lower back, pain may sometimes radiate to the legs.

A physical examination by your doctor will help determine where your discomfort may be coming from and whether the problem arose gradually or suddenly. In most cases, conservative treatment relieves the problem. Back surgery, though not as common, can relieve severe pain caused by compression on the nerves from a bulging disk that becomes herniated.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

You mean like having an awesome pg to fall into our hands and salvage our season?

Comon, it was a risk, nobody wanted to pay him that money, we did it with no insurance.

It was a bet and we just lost, now, Melo may be relieved from sharing the spotlight and become the star we paid for.

Otherwise, it's gonna be Eddy Curry eating our cap room all over again.

A bulging disc can cause discomfort and disability in various parts of the body, depending on the location of the affected disc(s). A bulging disc occurs when one of the discs between your vertebrae develops a weak spot and pops out beyond its normal perimeter. Interestingly, many people might have a bulging disc and not even know it, as long as the bulging area does not press upon surrounding tissues. When the bulging disc impinges on the nerves of the spinal column, however, that’s typically when symptoms begin. In the lower back, the damaged disc can cause pain to travel to the hips, buttocks, legs, and feet. In the upper back, the pain would radiate from the neck down the arm and to the fingers.

Approximately 90% of bulging discs occur in the lower back, or lumbar area of the spine. The most common lumbar bulging disc is seen around levels L4-L5 (lumbar segments 4 and 5) or L5-S1 (lumbar segment 5 and sacral segment1), which causes pain in the L5 nerve or S1 nerve, respectively. If the bulging disc impinges on the sciatic nerve in the lower back, it can lead to a back problem called sciatica. On the other hand, if the bulging disc is located in the neck, it is called a cervical bulging disc.

If you are concerned that you're starting to show signs of a bulging disc, you should take the time to visit our bulging disc symptoms page and also see your doctor to confirm your suspicions.

Bulging Disc Causes & Treatments

A bulging disc can be very painful, but you can increase your chances of avoiding this condition by learning more about bulging disc causes. It is important to know what activities to avoid and which ones you should take precautions against. Some ways you might be able to avoid a bulging disc are by protecting your back when lifting, using good posture, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting regular exercise. You should also be aware that age is another risk factor for bulging discs, since discs tend to become weaker and less elastic over the years.

After you have been diagnosed with a bulging disc, your doctor will recommend a range of treatments such as rest, a heating pad, exercises, and medication. Most of the time, a bulging disc will heal on its own, but in a certain percentage of cases, your doctor may recommend surgery.

I had the same situation occur last year, and it rendered me paralyzed from the waist down until I had emergency surgery. Had I waited two more days, the paralysis would have been permanent. Thank God for good neurosurgeons.

Herniated/bulging discs are nothing to play with. Hopefully Amar'e will be able to recover quickly.

Another season, and more adversity to persevere through. We will get the job done, even BETTER than last year. GO KNICKS!

To think we had David Lee. Not the news I expecting to here getting home from a septoplasty to fix a deviated septum and week of recovery with constant bloody nose. And I was actually looking forward to doing nothing but watching the Knicks. Fortunately we have Jorts and get Jeffries back soon and maybe get Amare back by the last week of the season.

The other fortunate thing is that with the Oxycodone I was given might not only easy my pain but ease the pain of dealing with a Knicks loss tonight and this awful Amare/Lin news but what can I expect from a cursed franchise. Prescription says to take 1 or 2 pills every 4hours if needed. So I started by taking only 1 as the first dose given to me at the hospital wore off and I could feel the pain coming.

Sorry UK family for my ramblin state. Amare if you're reading I'm here for you if you need a friend we can recover together!

Wow man glad you made a full recovery core as you seemed to be walking fine the other night. I know Baron was shelved forever and this Amare one seems more serious with the leakage
