Here’s the thing though: Even as Lin was providing the Knicks with the energy and the offense to win a third straight game, even as he was electrifying the Pacers crowd and drawing his own share of arena-rattling roars, there was a small gaggle of NBA scouts sitting behind the baseline who were, to be kind, unimpressed.

“Still a D-League player,” one of them said.

“Nothing special,” said another.

Look, scouts are the forgotten warriors of the NBA, pounding the road with their laptops and their notebooks, charting plays, meticulously turning squiggles and arrows and letters on a computer screen and a legal pad into strategies that the home office can employ on some future night. It is a thankless role. And a good scout’s eye is often as trusted as any voice in any organization.

So it’s hard to just dismiss commentary like that. Most scouts know what they’re talking about. They’ve watched more basketball than any 40 of the most rabid hoops junkies you know. It’s their life. It’s their livelihood.

And they still think Jeremy Lin is a D-League player?

does he still have weaknesses in his game? yes—but there's a lot of upside with Lin. Man what does this kid have to do to prove himself?

Scouting is an inexact process (I wouldn't even call it an inexact science). It's as much true in baseball (where plays are isolated so you can evaluate pitchers, hitters etc. more exactly without teammates confusing the issue as much). In basketball, only more so.

Lin has shown about as much consistency as anyone (look at all the grades assigned by Jim Cavan on their blog over the past 15 games) -- you'll probably see that Lin has been the most consistently well-performing Knick. And that's pre/post MDA, pre/post Melo, etc.

In the movie "White Men Can't Jump", the Wesley Snipes character says (I think in regard to Jimi Hendrix) -- something like "I know you listen to the music, but can you HEAR him" (inexact quotes). It implies a lot of people listen to the music, but only a few actually HEAR it.

The same is true here (when you read this forum). A lot of people watch games (some for a long time) -- I've watched for a long time AND read Starks' autobio (how many here actually have while claiming themselves fans?). Most here watch the games, but a very prescious few SEE the game.

Exactly, just because someone has a job doesn't mean they're good at it.

This is Moneyball personified. I watch him play...and at face value...he really is not that impressive. He is not as explosive as many point guards, he cannot jump as high, his shot almost has too much arc, he turns the ball over too much, he doesn't have eyes behind his head, he is relatively weak going left. He does not jump out at you. He simply doesn't "look like an NBA point guard".

I posted this before...and I will post it again.

I know it is not fair to compare Lin's 22 games since the start of Linsanity to other PG stats that have started the full season, but I will do it anyway. This is where Lin stands versus other PGs.

PG - 19.3 - Rank 5th
APG - 8.1 - Rank 6th
Steals/GM - 2.2 - Rank 2nd
Rebounds - 3.9 - Rank 4th

Not too shabby...right Steven A? LOL! Send him back to the D-league.

"Some Scouts" is so Fox News-ish

Is this the same scout who said D'Antoni's departure would cost Lin millions?

Who is the freakin' source?

IF he fails those scouts are "right".

If not, they fail.

Or, check this out:

Maybe they're more right than wrong, and maybe TripleThreat is the rightest of all when he tells us that David Stern is pushing for Lin success by pulling the strings on the referee puppets!

Something to chew on, not saying I back this view!

Lin FOR THE WIN, SILLY BITCHES!

Jeeez, if he's a D leaguer than what were some of the other PG that we've had? I don't know about some scouts, but I would take Lin over almost every Pg the Knicks ever had.

Watching every game on HDTV, JLin has been getting less calls than he deserves. However in the last few game, JLin has been much more demonstrative in making sure the ref are calling the fouls. He's learning.

sounds a lot like this messageboard. you have an opinion, get proven wrong, but instead of moving on the error gets stated louder and prouder

I wonder who these dumb scouts are. Give us a name so we'll know just how stupid they are. Why don't they give their name with their replies. What are they afraid of?? How the hell are you still a D-League player putting up 20 plus points, grabbing 5 rebounds, nearly 10 assists and 4 steals...etc and doing it consistently??? Put them out of a job. I'd fired anyone on my staff who over looked Lin.

How about turnovers per game. how about games lost during losing streaks? how about getting burned on defense per game? how about getting owned by Rondo, Lou Williams and Deron?

Rookie, Please. Open your eyes. The guy has major flaws, but can distribute the ball better than anyone else on our roster - we have not had a good PG in forever. Defensively, he is bad, and his move is drive to the congested paint and see if he can pass.
