Ultimate NYK Decision: The Coach or the Star?

The Knicks are a mess and every possibility has been explored. In the end, it seems the two main culprits are the coach, Mike D'Antoni, and the star, Carmelo Anthony.

The coach is accused of not behaving like one, being too stubborn about his system and being incapable of designing new plays to make the pieces he has work. The accusers believe he has been given enough time to win in NY and can only seem to fail. And many of those hate the fact that he doesn't preach defense. But some argue that he hasn't had enough roster continuity to make this possible. Defenders use the "Linsanity streak" as his defense to show his system works but he has a player not helping his cause.

And here we go with culprit number 2.

Carmelo Anthony, the prodigal son who returned to NY amid great hope from the fans. Some people still accuse him of being too greedy in pushing a trade to NY where the team had to give up all its depth. But somehow management found a way to restock the talent and expectations grew. But there was always the doubt that Melo would fit with Amar'e and D'antoni, and their initial record backed this up. When he went down to injury, people expected NY to lose, but then Linsanity occurred. But almost as soon as Melo came back, Linsanity stopped, and many fans can't think of any other reason than Melo and his isos and ball domination. The fact that he lacks leadership, defense and rebounding don't help his cause. But defenders argue that he is a true star, that Lin the D-Leaguer can't be compared to Melo, who has been longer in the league and has the stats to back him up.

You are given the power to do only one of two things: Fire D'Antoni and keep the team running through Melo or trade Melo and run the team through Mike's system and maybe get "Linsanity" back.

What's your choice?

Fire D'Antoni
Trade Melo

The choice is get rid of a rare talented player who has had success in this league but is also a hard personality to manage...OR....get rid of a coach who has had succes with 1 out of 3 NBA teams he has coached and cannot find a winning formula unless his roster fits perfectly with what he tries to do, even if said roster is exceptionally talented and balanced. Oh, and the coach also doesn't communicate with his players (from everything that has been reported).

I say try with a different coach. Not saying it will turn Melo into what we all want him to be, but maybe the new guy will hold him and the rest of the team accountable when they continue to make the same mistakes that cost us games.

MDA seems like a very likable guy...which is probably his downfall. He's a nice guy, players coach. Doesn't like confrontation, doesn't hold players accountable. If we could all turn back the clock to 2008 and went harder for Thibodeau we all probably would. Let Woodson finish the year off, and go hard for Sloan or PJax, coaches that command respect, preach D, and will bench and get in players faces.

First of all, you must consider this decision to ways: business wise and basketball wise.

Business wise it's a no brainer that you keep Melo and fire D'Antoni.

Basketball wise some might say the above is still a no brainer but I think you have to consider the constant amount of times this man has been outcoached. I rather deal with having to force a player to play defense, not force a coach to coach it. Being a coach consists of more of just being able to construct a nice offensive plan. He can't adapt, he can't communicate, he's not developing anyone on the mental aspects of the game. I think you try this roster with someone who knows what the hell they are doing and if the same Melo problems still exists well then they will be clear as day and he will have no excuses for his actions and you get rid of him.

Look how long it took for him to insert Jeremy Lin into the Knicks lineup..."But it would destroy Toney Douglas confidence!!!" LOLOL

I think we need to think out of the box on this one and fire someone else. What's Herb Williams done for us lately?

If that is the case, he is not a good choice for head coach. He prolly doesn't know Amare's name.

He's lead the league in scoring, been to the playoffs every year and reached a WCF. He also won a National Title and Olympic Gold Medal while being widely regarded as one of the most valuable players on that team. What has D'Antoni done in his career? Loser in Denver, Loser in NY and a winner in Phoenix with the best PG of all time arguably.

Not defending Melo's actions of late, but he can be coached and can play at a very high level. D'Antoni doesn't have as good of a track record.

Europe? That doesn't count? Also, what about the book? Does Melo have a book?

Um....wasn't MDA the guy who designed the offense that gold medal winning team ran and is a very highly regarded player-like legendary status- in Italy for his basketball accomplishments?

Since there seems to be an equal amount of hate for each of them, why not just get rid of them both?

My feelings about Pringles/Melo are quite similar to my feelings about Congress

Because Melo, while not LeBron or Kobe, is a once in a generation offensive talent. Laugh all you want. But many would say the same about Bernard Kind and Melo is better. He needs a coach that will tap into his strengths while forcing him to understand what else needs to be done for the team.

D'Antoni, on the other hand, is not one of the better coaches around. Offensive genious? OK...maybe when he has the right roster, whatever that is. But as a coach, he doesn't do all the things that are necessary.

If Melo is a once in a generation offensive talent (if a generation is typically considered 30 years, that would include Kobe, MJ, Iverson, Larry Bird, etc.) -- then the NBA as a league has the worst defense in a generation.

By any generational measure however, that 40% field goal average sucks.

How about his prior 46 percent for his career? We know he sux this year but the reason is not just black and white unless you don't like grey.
