I wish he'd retire after this year... he was the best commissioner in sports but that clearly has been far from the case the past few years

I'm not so sure about that. He was lucky enough to be there when Magic and Bird came into the league, even more lucky that Michael Jordan came in later on, and made the NBA so God**** star-driven and dependent on its few biggest stars, when MJ retired the NBA never came close to those types of numbers and ratings since. I think last year's LeBron numbers came close, but there is such a huge gap from the 90's to the 10's. His problem is he builds the entire NBA around a tiny handful of guys and most fans realize there are only a few teams that actually have a shot at winning it all.

In contrast to the NFL which seems to feature a new team almost every year, constantly churns and creates new stars, and has had popularity grow consistently every year for the past decade and every playoffs and primetime games, their own records for ratings and viewership get destroyed. One of the reasons is because NFL fans know every year their team has a legitimate shot at the spotlight.

Luckily for Stern, Jeremy Lin showed up, and if the Knicks can make themselves a top team, then he can be that crossover star, but that still doesn't fix the problems of the NBA.

So if stern goes, you think his replacement will be "better"?

The guy is a prick, but in the end, attendance is up and the league is doing very well.

He did well. He had to deal with a lot of bull**** but managed to keep in the league in top gear.

Handled this lock out like a GANGSTA. "Oh, you want to f'ck around? ok. now play back to back to backs".

I don't understand the hate. The NBA is thriving and they have a very good product. Before he took over, the NBA was down in the dumps. I know he lucked into Magic and Bird era but he knew how to run the show.

Adam Silver is going to be an absolute disaster of a commissioner- he has no charm or charisma at all, plus his lockout performance was especially poor- when Stern left him in charge for a day while he (allegedly) had the flu, the owners side suffered a drubbing in the press. He's a great number two, but not someone you want heading the nba- hopefully they'll find someone else by the time Stern retires- I find it hard to believe that there is no one in the world more capable of being an nba commissioner than Davis Stern and Adam Silver!

If theres one thing I hate is the " respect for the game" rule. It took out the fun out of the game

I do admire him for making players dress like professionals during game day

The only thing that was dragging the league down was the drug culture, so I give him credit for cleaning that all up. Other than that, what has he really done? He negotiated a terrible TV deal for the league which is why teams were losing money. His efforts to take the NBA global has not really produce much that I can see. Bird, Magic, Jordan kept the league going during the 80s and 90s. I mean Stern did keep things rolling, but what has he really done that any other commish would not have done. The guy turns me off with the disrepect he has shown to his players on several occassions through his reign.

Is the Francessa thing a joke? I would love if Mike retired. I like every guy on the Fan better and when I drive home Francessa drives me nuts with his droning and lack of knowledge.

I'd have to agree its time for him to retire. Remember those alternate balls (pause) he had them use a few years back.

Francessa is the refined troll of AM sports radio. He thinks because he likes the smell of horsesheet at the track that that somehow makes him better and more knowledgeable than anyone else in sports. I certainly will miss listening to him predict/guess what the Neilsen ratings were for various sporting events. That whole bit was broadcast radio at it's finest.

Hopefully the FAN replaces him with someone who at least knows the difference between Bill Russell and Bill Walton. Listening to him ramble on mindlessly about the Knicks and the NBA year after year was only slightly more painful than reading most of the posts in here.

Al ot of the stuff you're talking about is hard to pin on Stern. There was an obvious drop off in talent after MJ and his foes retired. But, okay, let's pin it on Stern.

In spite of all that, the NBA brand went international in a big way. Part of the reason Linsanity, for example, took off, was because of Stern's international commitment. In that regard, he's exceeded the NFL.

I am not a Stern fan, especially his condescending manner. If I wer ea player I'd want to punch him. I fi were a new owner, I'd want to punch him. When it was Stern and the last group of owners, the NBA made great strides. But that era has long since passed

Major Sports commish:

Roger Goodell, Selig, Bettman and Stern.

All hated by fans.

These guys can't please everyone all the time. They have to please the majority of the owners that constitute the leagues they represent.

How do fans vote their displeasure? They stop buying tickets and stop watching them on TV.

If ratings are doing well, there is the evidence you need.

he has been awful for years now. My biggest argument, too many teams and watered down talent.

Stern presided over the addition of teams that has further watered down the talent level.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt
