It's safe to say his defensive strides are permanent. With Shump returning from injury, do you think it would make more sense for the rotation to move JR to starting SG?

Lin(36)/Davis(12)
JR(30)/Shumpert(16)
Melo(36)/Fields(16)
Amare/Novak/Jeffries
Chandler/Jeffries/Harrelson

It moves Fields to his natural position. Shumpert and JR aren't forced to play out of position at SF. JR spaces the floor for the first unit, and when he gets burn with the second unit, he can be more assertive.

I would guess that this type of move will eventually happen, but probably not until just before playoffs or next year. Mostly because of continuity sake, and little cause JR may not know system well enough. Also, I gotta guess that JR brings instant firepower off of bench (something Fields is not as good as) and the fact that JR is meshing with Davis.

martin -

will jr smith even be on the team next year?

didn't we sign him to a one year deal?

i doubt we can afford him after this year, unless i am mistaken.

JR Smith coming off the bench makes the most sense to me. Fields tends to start strong and wilt later, so having Smith close games also makes sense. Need the guy's energy (and he's got a molecule of chemistry with Baron Davis).

Is JR really our bench scorer though? Davis is the one that pounds the ball away and plays as Lin's understudy with Lin out of the game. As for chemistry, for every Davis-Smith alley-oop connection, there are two botched alley-oops (thanks to Baron). I think Landry would do just fine with the bench.

We need a 3 point threat at the 2 and Landry is not cutting it.
We should insert JR Smith into the starting lineup right away to get the chemistry going.
Landry is still valuable for his hustle and defense but we need someone who can spread the floor for Lin to operate.

This is the bottom line, we really need more shooting in the lineup.

I'm still in favor of starting Shump with JR as 6th man

you are judging Baron after game 2 after 9 month layoff? is there any thought process here?

This is inevitable at some point and exactly why I though signing JR would hurt Fields. But people told me JR would only take minutes from Walker -- We have only seen JR for 3-4 games and there is no way we should make this change right now. I think for now JR and Novak should come off the bench and be part of the core rotation of - Lin, JR, Melo, JJ, Tyson or Lin, Shump, Melo, Novak, Tyson those rotations should play together and log heavy minutes. Baron, Fields, JORTS, STAT and JJ should also log minutes to take on teh second units of most teams.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Alley-oops don't win basketball games. I could care less for them as an indication of chemistry.

Fact of the matter is that Davis was dominating the ball from the get-go with the bench unit, even with his rust. He is the bench's equivalent of Lin. When the rust wears off the ball domination will continue.

Answer
nope!

Leave Fields alone
he is a 2 way player & its only recent yrs that J.R. stepped up his Defense
JR is better coming off the bench than Fields coming off bench

Fields is playing well Why ?
oh why would Knicks wanna mess with Fields again ? right now. He's improving every game vs good team too

Good to see J.R. got a haircut.
What was up with that line in his head - The inevitable horseshoe receding hairline....that thing was fascinating.
I was mezmorized by that, it was even better in HD. I can't be thae only one that noticed it, and if anyone else pointed it out before this
apologies from me as I haven't read all the posts.
Damn, I wish he would have kept it - could've been the new cornrow. I miss A.I. and the 'row 'do.
Melo held it down just as well for a while there....
Sorry for the hijack - as for the thread question, let;s see the dude do something in this uniform for a bit. I think Fields has been doing a fine job so far. He threw down a nice baseline reverse dunk the other night - he has some nice moves to the hoop and is a pretty smart player.

Gotta love reminiscing about J.R. & Nate a few years ago....Melo throwing that punch & backpedaling....Good times!

Shumpert is better than JR - I'd rather have him on the floor. The Shump/Lin backcourt is incredible and has won us quite a few games.

Because Fields can't shoot!! He can't throw it in the ocean from 10+ feet right now. And now, it's starting to turn into airballs.

JR moving into starting lineup is inevitable, but I'm gonna miss that nerdy handshake...
