In 1938, the rank for who occupied the most newspaper column space was:
1)Seabiscuit
2)Roosevelt
3)Hitler

It was a difficult time with the country still not fully recovered from the depression, and with a world war looming. And here comes the unnoticed racehorse Seabiscuit, who trainers and those involved with horseracing overlooked because he just didn't look like he was a good racehorse.

Lin is not Secretariat. He is Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit's most famous race is probably his match race with War Admiral. War Admiral won the Triple Crown -- the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont (no horse has done that currently in the last 30 plus years -- that's how hard it is to do). Seabiscuit's trainer told the jockey to let War Admiral get ahead of the Biscuit. He knew of the competitive fire within Seabiscuit's heart. Seabiscuit passed War Admiral that day when most did not think he would. He didn't have the pedigree. He hadn't accomplished as much as the Triple Crown Winner, and son of Man o' War. But he touched the heart of the nation and was the #1 story of 1938.

martin, there are books? You know, with reliable research? Laura Hillenbrand's book is well footnoted.

You do know that you don't have to be present to know things, right? For example, you do know the Knicks won the championship in 1973? Do you remember witnessing that?
