http://www.cbssports.com/nba/story/17011944/knicks-nearing-rock-bottom-but-dantoni-isnt-to-blame

When the Knicks limp into Miami on Friday to face the Heat, it'll either generate a wakeup call of the highest order or produce a thud heard round the NBA. That thud would be rock bottom, one that could reverberate all the way to Madison Square Garden.

New York and its star-studded, role-player-poor roster has lost seven of eight and is showing few, if any, signs of turning its fortunes around. There was a spasm of ball movement and coherent play Tuesday night in Charlotte, but this was hardly a team that was built to consider avenging an earlier home loss to the Bobcats a significant accomplishment.

The clear vision within the organization is to wait until point guard Baron Davis gets into the lineup to see if he can make a difference. Davis has been practicing, and though he isn't ready to test his conditioning and injured back in a game yet, he could be in the next week or so. The question becomes whether that will be enough time to save Mike D'Antoni from what would be a cruel, unfair, yet inevitable fate.

In some corners of the Knick locker room, there was fear after a listless loss to the rebuilding Cavaliers on Wednesday night that D'Antoni could be gone soon if progress isn't achieved, according to a person familiar with the players' thinking. That would be a shame, because D'Antoni never asked to coach the ill-fitting roster he has, and his reservations about giving up so much for Carmelo Anthony are proving to be dead on.

"I hope you're wrong," one person connected to the team said, hoping D'Antoni can hang on.

"It's not the coach," said another person invested in the Knicks turning things around. "I wish it were that simple."

It isn't, of course. A mess of this magnitude rarely can be blamed on one person or factor. To anyone who thinks so, I ask this: If the best offensive coach in the game has a team that is struggling to break 70 points and 40 percent shooting on a regular basis, what does that tell you about the players he is coaching?

"It's got to be a willing thing from everybody," Amar'e Stoudemire told reporters in Cleveland after the Knicks lost to the Cavs 91-81. "We all have to be willing to space the court, willing to move the ball. It has to be something that we all have to buy into. It works, and it's been proven that it works."

"It" being D'Antoni's offense, which does work and would work for the Knicks if only they had someone able to knock down an open shot -- and just as important, if they had five players on the floor willing to run it properly. Stoudemire's comment about everyone needing to buy into floor spacing and ball movement strongly suggested that some on the team were not. Which brings us to what the Knicks should do, long before they consider ousting D'Antoni.

Anthony, who followed his injury-ravaged 35-for-105 shooting performance over a four-game stretch with one single point against the Bobcats and 5-for-14 shooting against the Cavs, should take a page from Dwyane Wade's book: Sit down and rest his body until he's healthy. Much like the Heat and Wade, the Knicks wouldn't be better in the long run without Melo. But a few days of rest and treatment could get Anthony's body and mind right and also get Stoudemire going again as the focal point of the offense.

It's worth a shot. Things couldn't get worse.

What the Knicks' decision-makers want to see before making a rash decision is how the team plays with a backcourt of Davis and Iman Shumpert along with a healthy Anthony. Such a concoction has a chance to be really good, but there's virtually no chance of seeing all those things Friday night in Miami or Saturday night in Houston. It becomes a question of how long Garden chairman James Dolan is willing to wait before making another sort of change.

Of serious concern to D'Antoni has to be who has his back within the organization. Donnie Walsh, the man who hired him and the executive responsible for restoring star power and fiscal responsibility after the Isiah Thomas era, is out of the picture in an undefined consulting role. GM Glen Grunwald, like D'Antoni and everyone else in the organization, is on the last year of his contract.

Mark Warkentien, whose consulting deal was extended this season, is represented by Creative Artists Agency -- the same powerhouse that orchestrated the Anthony trade. Warkentien, the Nuggets GM when Anthony was there, also is said to have Dolan's ear, according to a league source. This could be troubling news for D'Antoni, who is known to be regarded by Warkentien as a roster-specific coach -- perfect with personnel that suit his style, and not the ideal fit otherwise.

Whether Dolan makes an in-season coaching change -- something he historically has opposed -- or waits until after the shortened season, it is clear who the logical candidate would be to take over at MSG. Some telling comments from former Lakers coach Phil Jackson to the New York Times recently caught the eyes of several rival executives and coaching industry sources who are convinced of two things: Jackson, 66, has the itch to return, and the Knicks might be the only job that would lure him back.

Jackson is said to be semi-enjoying a fitful retirement. With few if any hobbies, Jackson has been described as restless by those who have spoken with him. Just as important, the Zen Master feels healthy and rejuvenated after shaking off the effects of back and hip ailments that made road trips a nightmare for him over his past few seasons with the Lakers.

Returning this season, with this maniacal travel schedule, would've been senseless for Jackson. But with a year off, Jackson could settle right back into his routine next season with a normal schedule. And what better way to come back than to chase a 12th championship with the team he first became a champion with as a player?

"The feeling is, all Dolan would have to do is ask, and Phil would say yes," a person connected to the former Lakers coach told me this week.

All of this would align with some basketball moons and stars. Kobe Bryant believes Anthony will turn out to be the rightful heir to his greatness -- and Jackson might just be the coach to push him there. It also fits with the comments Jackson made to the Times. It was classic Phil who sat down for lunch with the great Mark Heisler in El Segundo, Calif., recently and dropped clues on the table like so many bread crumbs.

While insisting, "I have no desire to coach," Jackson said in the next breath, "You never say never, right?" He acknowledged, "Without a doubt, New York is special. Why wouldn't it be? When I was there, it was one of the greatest times to be in New York. I mean, the Mets, Jets and Knicks won championships all in one year."

Don't hold your breath for a repeat. But Jackson spoke of what a special time in his life that was, how friends and former teammates like Walt "Clyde" Frazier (the Knicks' renowned TV analyst) and Bill Bradley are there, while skirting the issue that his girlfriend, Jeanie Buss, is a fan of the city.

But the most pertinent words out of Jackson's mouth in that interview? The ones that give credence to league sources who describe Jackson as bored in retirement and still having the itch? These were the words:

"I don't miss it. I really don't miss it," Jackson said. "But I think I have to stick my finger into an electric socket every once in a while just to get a little jolt out of life to keep it going because that's what gave me the joys, the jollies of life."

The largest electric socket in the world awaits between 31st and 33rd Streets, and between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. If Jackson goes, the only question is who'd be providing the jolt.

Interesting article. It's good to hear that the players are still behind the coach and that they recognize the fault lies mostly with them. While it's true that you can't just give MDA any old roster and think he's gonna succeed, it's also true that they brought him in and to this day haven't given him the one thing they know he needs to be successful! To handcuff the guy after sending away players that fit what he was doing seems extremely unfair. Even down to not resigning Shawne, this has been a rough situation for D'Antoni. They left him with literally the worst passing PG from the team a year ago. At the least he deserves to play out the year and see what he can do.

Heck he even went so far as to give Dolan's guy Melo every opportunity to shine this year. He had the ball in his hands and a complete green light. They created plays for Melo and on top of that gave him an excellent pick man in Tyson. No player could ask for more in terms of freedom to do his thing. There's no way anyone could blame the coach for Melo's failure so far. It's literally Melo's team to lead.

I think we need to see if this group can get out of this slump and play some great BB this year. If not then you can make needed changes in the off season when it's fresh and any new coach can have a clean start. However, you've gotta give MDA a full shot and hopefully with a real PG.

its not MDAs fault as this article points out. The current roster isn't condusive for SSOL. MDA needs a guy like Amare or David Lee playing center. So they can run and gun with more speed at every position. A Chris Paul, DWill, Nash like PG. And the rest of the roster fill out with guys who shoot lights out. None of which the Knicks front office has provided him. Well Donnie built a Antoni team last year which lasted half a season. They scored like no other but were awful defensively and wildly inconsistent. Played great when the 3 was falling and got blown out when they were not . I've heard a lot of people say they heard from people close to Phil Had that he feels coaching the Knicks, coming full circle would be the fitting end to his glorious NBA career!

I'm hoping Phil stays retired. I know i'm in the minority, but he just rubs me the wrong way. People want to give Nash all the credit for D'Antoni's success, but when it comes to Jax, he's great and no one seems to notice he's had ALL TIME GREATS when won his titles. He didn't just have some good players like the Mavs or Pistons, this dude had Literally the greatest player of all time and the next guy in line for that and the most dominant Center in our generation, plus boatloads of other really good players. His teams were fully loaded. He did a great job handling those teams and talents, which he deserves all the credit for, but Jordan was an assassin and then he gets Kobe who is also an assassin, plus throw in Pippen and Shaq and a little Pau. No one else in the modern era has had that level of talent except for Riley and KC Jones.

I don't want to win a title with this guy so he can claim all the credit. I'd prefer to win without him. It would be much sweeter for me. I don't think he'd really take the job without an assassin leader on the team to insure that he didn't have to get up off the bench much like he's used to. People complain about MDA not calling timeouts must never have seen Phil coach. Dude didn't invent the Triangle and I think he takes so much credit for what his players and staff did so he could just manage personalities. That's a luxury most coaches don't have cuz they don't have the best players in the league. Is he better than Spoelstra? Hell yes!!! I just don't think he's the only guy that could win with the level of talent he had. Sloan, LB, Adelman, Karl could all have won multiple titles with his teams.

You make too much sense, nixluva, go away again.

I think this settles the question, "has D'Antoni lost the locker room?". He clearly has not lost the locker room.

coaches need players. and for an offensive coach it's nearly impossible to run any offense when you don't have a pg (sorry guys jeremy "jason kidd" lin doesn't cut it.) i'm glad to see d'antoni still has the backing of the locker room and that these guys know they have to play better. i don't see anything getting better before we actually start putting a real pg out on the court with these guys. until then amear and melo are going to be continue to be inconsistent. sadly right now our best offense is the lob pass to chandler. yikes.

I'm not seeing that D'Antoni has the backing of the 'locker room'. There is one source close to one player - probably Amar'e. Definitely not Melo.

I also don't see how you can read this, and not fault MDA for not adapting better to his roster.

He'll be happy in Toronto next year. Just hope Nash doesn't return to that home at a discount!

Some fans aren't . Seriously, I get that D'Antoni has had a lot on his plate. I just don't believe that he was up to a rebuilding job. He might do fine with a more balanced roster. I don't believe its the same thing as saying that D'Antoni can't coach under any circumstances. If that's still a bridge too far for some of you to cross after more than three seasons, then I doubt that anything will convince you.

Lets not pretend as if the roster was turning over every week. There has been enough time to examine what kind of a job he's done with what he's been given IMO.

Its encouraging to hear that there are some players who still have his back. It would be nice though if we could see them translate that loyalty on the court by playing smarter, being better teammates, and in some cases playing harder. If they really have his back, the lack of a decent PG shouldn't stop them from doing these things.

Besides, it clear that Herb and the Illuminati are behind our losing streak, you just are all too blind to see it.

Players can be worried about the future of the coach, but its exactly them who hold his future in their hands. There is no logical explanation to the collapse this team has had this season. With less talented, especially less players suited up for D'antoni's offense, we have certainly looked better than we have this season. Blame the PG all you want, but this team shouldn't look as bad as it looks on offense with guys like Melo, Amar'e and even Chandler cleaning the boards and scoring putbacks like a machine. It really shouldn't.

Is it the coach? Such a big mess can't be caused by a single guy, so the answer is "no". We've already seen videos were D'Antoni ask one thing from his players and he gets another one.

If a point guard can help this and Baron Davis is questionable forever, its managements' responsibility to get a new one at any cost. If they can't, then then can't use D'Antoni as the scapegoat because he isn't responsible for not having a PG.

Where is the leadership in this team? If this is Melo's team but he doesn't want to take that charge, then screw it Amar'e and take your team back. Stop being a ghost out there and push this team. This team needs to wake up and the origin of the awakening can't nor won't come from management nor D'Antoni. There has to be a player who pushes himself to the limit while demanding the same from others.

If Melo doesn't want the position, I hope Amar'e takes it back, like before the infamous trade.

Okay but D'Antoni has a top 10 player of this generation in Melo and what is suppose to be THE most dominant PF in the league. So whats the difference? I'd rather have the coach who knows how to win with talent. Once again, whats the difference? Our current coach obviously CAN'T manage all-star personalities. I'd rather keep the talent, and have the coach who CAN have those personalities working together and on the same page with one common goal. The fact of the matter is, whether you guys realize it or not, we won't be winning a title with D'Antoni any time soon, if ever. Everyone complains about giving up too much talent or reversing the trade and keeping our old team. That Denver team may be good, they will probably go to the playoffs, but they WILL NOT win a championship. If the article is right about it only taking one call from Dolan, then Dolan needs to get Jax's ass on the damn phone. Especially if he wants to keep selling tickets..

EXACTLY! Its obviously one guy who is head over heels with MDA - STAT.
Well, if STAT wants his career to end being the "most dominant PF" without a ring then so be it. He can request a trade and follow MDA. Meanwhile, Dolan needs to be on the phone with Jax making **** happen.

And I'm sick of hearing about his players not fitting his system. Okay, yes we get it. But what pieces was he exactly missing in Phoenix? Last I checked, they didn't get any rings. If a player such as Kobe, Melo, Durant, LeBron, DWade, DRose, or Dwight falls in my lap regardless if they fit my current system or not, I accept it and fit my team according to that player's dominance. The man is stubborn. So because the **** doesn't fit your lousy ass system the fans are suppose to suffer and be okay with watching the nonsense? Because they don't fit your system you can't motivate your damn players to hustle and to play to win? Because you can't get what you want when you have 3 damn good players on your bench you can't ATLEAST look like you are trying to coach. Bull****.
Amar'e can follow is ass to whatever town. Give me Jax or some coach who is willing to work with our current nucleus.

Listen if you're a top 10 player you make people better. He has made the Knicks worse and Denver has gotten better and they don't even have Chandler, Smith, Martin. So it speaks volumes about Carmelo as a player.

At the end of the day basketball is a simple game. Defend, rebound, move the ball. We don't do any of those and a big reason falls on Melo. He holds the ball, players don't play there games, they are no in rythm when they get it and then other players force shots because they know it's not coming back out.

The Billups for Chandler move was just a terrible decision. Tyson is a nice player, but you don't sacrifice your offense to improve your defense and lose the ability to make a move with the amnesty in the future.

How can we really say that he makes this team worse when he has no point guard. When he is being given roles he is not used to. When the only thing that should really be on his mind is scoring. Let's not forget how things could have been much worse last year in our first time back in the playoffs. Granted, we didn't win a game but who put the team on his back and damn near did everything he could? He was holding the ball then, with no point guard but no one had a problem with it. But now that he is missing due to an injury that everyone likes to ignore, its a problem. Should he adjust? Yes. Did it take him a long time to realize that, yes! But has he not taken less than 20 attempts in the last two games? Many people have Amar'e listed as a top 10 player too you know. But his lack of effort and aggressiveness seems to go unnoticed on here.

Melo has never been an alpha male on any denver team. It was andre miller-Iverson-Billups for the most part. Melo is the best player but the leadership type. Same for Amare to some extent. Nash and Marion were more the vocal-emotional leaders.

Best player is not always the best leader.

Neither of our big two is really that kind of personality. Amare last year was more leader than perhaps he has been in the past in PHX.

This team is finding itself and it takes time. We have had neither time in either quantity or quality enough to work it thru.

Is that the coach's fault?

Question is could another coach have done better? Or worse?

It could be worse believe it or not.

My take is everyone is on board with "Team" and the coach but they are not executing and lose confidence in themselves, and can't see the system yet.

MDA could just drop the who thing and just let them "Play" which was what the first game looked like but that won't really take us anywhere.

Or, they can keep trying to work it thru. That seems to be the lanugage coming out of the media.

MEdia is all we got to go on.

After that, Its Phil Jax's job if he wants it.

If not, Im for resigning MDA

We got swept in the playoffs; how do things get worse? And he didn't put the team on his back. If the guy just played like **** instead of terrible we actually win game 1. He was medicore in the series outside of game 2.

If you're a great player you adjust to your role. Lebron took a team with virtually nobody to 50 wins every year in Cleveland, Wade took his team to the playoffs with no one, Dwight Howard wins 50 games every year, if you're demanding max dollars and you call yourself elite you make your team a playoff team by yourself. You don't need to win in the playoffs, but with the 2nd easiest schedule in the league and embarrassing losses to lottery teams it falls on you.

If you're injured you don't shoot 30 times
