What's up with D-Will?
January, 10, 2012 Jan 103:21PM ETEmail Print Comments5 By Mike MazzeoDeron Williams is still one of the best point guards in the NBA.

He possesses the league's best crossover dribble, and his court vision is second to none.

But Williams has struggled with his jump shot this season and currently leads the NBA in turnovers. His PER of 15.68 ranks 132nd in the league.

He's currently shooting a career-worst 34.7 percent from the field, and 27.7 percent from 3-point range, far below his career averages (46, 35.2). Williams has shot less than 50 percent from the field in all but one of his first nine games this season, and has made just seven of his last 32 attempts from downtown.

His 4.4 turnovers per game are 0.3 more than any other player, and he has turned the ball over six times in four of those nine games.

His stat line in Monday night's 106-101 home loss to Atlanta seemed to epitomize his season: He had 15 points and a season-high 14 assists in a season-high 41 minutes, but shot just 6-for-17 from the field -- 1-for-4 from beyond the 3-point arc -- and had six turnovers.

"I'm not happy with the way I'm playing," Williams said.

Someone within the organization wasn't happy with his body language, either, which is why the 27-year-old All-Star was told to quit sulking. And rest-assured he probably won’t be saying the team's offense "sucks" anymore.

"I gotta do a better job of leading these guys,” Williams said. "They can't see me visibly frustrated, because that's not good for anybody's confidence."

In Williams' defense, he plays for a bad team with only one offensive weapon: rookie MarShon Brooks. The Nets have no inside threat since Brook Lopez is out with a broken foot, and their perimeter shooters -- aside from Anthony Morrow recently -- haven't knocked down open shots (hence Williams' 7.7 assists per game, which should be much higher).

As a result, Williams has had to force the issue himself, which has led to forced shots and bad decision-making.

Still, Williams was voted as the ninth-best player in ESPN's rankings, and one would think a player that dominant would be able to lead his team -- despite all its injuries -- to a better record than 2-8.

Rumors about Williams' future will continue to swirl. It comes with the territory when a superstar says he’s going to opt out of his contract at the end of the season -- even if his reasoning makes perfect sense.

Williams has reiterated that he wants to stay and will stay if the Nets can put the right pieces around him.

Right now, they don't have many of those pieces, but if they can acquire Orlando center Dwight Howard, they'll be in fantastic shape. ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard said Monday that D-12's first choice is still to play with D-Will in Brooklyn, but admitted Dallas may be a better fit given the Mavericks' cap space and the fact they could conceivably put together "The Big 3 in Big D" in the offseason.

But for the time being, Williams is still a Net. And he'll have to raise his level if he wants to keep the Nets in the race long enough for them to make a splash at the deadline and have a shot at the playoffs.

The Nets are a lottery team right now, which is great. The idea of Brooks, a healthy Lopez and a top-10 draft pick playing together next season is an intriguing one.

It won't be if D-Will bolts, though.

Well, he's playing with rec league players, for one thing.

But on the other hand maybe he is not the dynamo everyone thought he was.

Is it true he chased Sloan out of Utah?

When I watched in the preseason, a few times he would grabbed his surgically repaired wrist and grimace. I don't know if he's healthy.

Didn't they trade away this years lotto pick? ... I checked and they still have their pick - http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed

I really thought they gave up their first in that trade for Deron. Nice job there.

His attitude has really gone down hill over the past few years- it was bad before he got to Jersey, and I think it was the reason the Jazz coach quit. He was overweight and out of shape when he started playing in Turkey, but you'd think by now he'd be in peak condition, and be sharper than most players since he actually played regularly during the lockout.

I just think he comes across as an a**hole these days, and nowhere near the hard-nosed competitor he used to be. Very doubtful he re-signs with the Nets, so it looks like they really shot themselves in the foot with that trade last season.

It looks like they have their pick. If you look at the debits column, I do not see their 2012 1st rd pick listed. It looks like they also have Houston's 1st rd pick.

Yes, you did misquote me. I said he does not have any major flaws in his game. That is not the same as saying he's flawless.

The norm would be for the person quoting someone to find the quote or not to mention it. If you write a book and want to quote someone, do you ask the person your quoting to find the source for you?

That's a much more balanced team with a a lot of size and it keeps the team fresh for the playoffs.

Waiting to see what Melo does this year is the most reasonable assessment. Only a partisan fan would declare either team the definite victor of the trade at this point.

Don't ruin the buzz. Dudes running around pounding their chest claiming Dolan made the Nuggs his trade BITCH is way too good to reduce.

Some how the Nuggs exodus to china some how enhances our trade value?

The failure of one does not enhance the success of another.

you know, in light of what the Clippers and the Nets had to give up for their stars, i think the Knicks package was a relative bargain.

Those two are flawless PGs. There's no point in comparing what we gave up for Carmelo with what other teams gave up for true superstars.

now how did i misquote you? you ****ing jackass.

just because you backed off later doesn't mean you didn't say D-Will is flawless. telling me that i should "ask for clarification" after you said something that was completely and totally unambiguous is retarded.

honestly i wish i didn't respond to your blatantly trollish post. but then again, it's always gonna be fun to point out the flaws of these players you consider flawless.

OK, it's not that complicated: in the next post down, I corrected it by saying that I meant he had no major flaws. Other than to be a troll, why would you continuously quote someone's misstatement that they later corrected?
In the same thread just a few minutes later, I specifically clarified the comment to you. You seem like a politician who's trying to jump on any misstatement an opponent makes rather than a message board poster who wants to have a fair discussion.

Ask for clarification before you accuse someone of being wrong or not astute. All I meant was that unlike Carmelo, they do not have any major flaws in their on-the-court performance.

Definitely prefer Melo to the Great Green Mouth. That Melo jumper from the baseline last night was sick. I haven't felt this good about the SF position since BK.
