Iman Shumpert Update: When the rookie cramped up Wednesday, it wasn't because he was dehyrdrated, it was because he hadn't played in over a week and had played nearly 30 minutes against the Bobcats. Shumpert said he suffered from cramps in college often. Trainers have told him that it's the type of athlete he is and the way his muscles react because he sweats a lot. He's always been a person who has to hydrate more often than other guys. He was taking the trainers' advice, because he was drinking two big sports drinks while I was talking to him.

let's hope not.

i was re-reading something about the knicks' workout of iman before the draft and it said that he had to have his workout cut short because he injured his hip. he seems like the kind of guy who plays 100mph and can get hurt doing so all the time. he might need to learn to pick his spots.

Amare, apparently agreeing with all of you, said with a smile, "He needs to start drinking some fluids."

D'Antoni said it's just rookie nerves but brushed off concern. "I don’t think there’s a crampism kind of disease, is there?"

Some amusing differences of opinion on Shumpert's recurring leg cramping issues. Many tweeps advising more Gatorade.

They may need something stronger than Gatorade for Iman. It's a strange thing, but he does go HARD!!! Better that than the "I'm saving my energy for scoring" guys.

Maybe he has cramp problems because he goes hard on Off and Def. I think we should cut his minutes alittle when Baron is no longer injuried. Right now we just can not afford to do that since our bench is so weak.

If the lead didn't disappear within minutes of him getting a break he could rest longer. MSG doesn't make it easier when their chanting "We Want Shumpert" LOL

HA! Yeah that's who i'm talking about. To be fair they've been playing harder, but still they take more plays off than a little bit. Iman doesn't mail any possessions in. I think that's why MDA like Jared, cuz he's another player that goes hard on D and you can't underestimate the value of having guys like that.

He should eat coconut oil. Also, I sweat a lot, I am always drenched after balling, so I can relate to Shumpdawg.

Every morning I put a big spoon of coconut oil in my coffee and this gives me strong energy for the brain, so maybe Shumpert could benefit from this.

Sit Shumpert for a week and allow his legs to heal fully.

Unfortunately, the ticket buying public is desperate to watch him play.

(via Howard Beck, NYT) "Shumpert, who joined the starting lineup Saturday, dazzled in his first start at the Garden, throwing an alley-oop dunk to Landry Fields and converting a lob from Chandler. When the Knicks struggled in the fourth quarter, a booming chorus of “We want Shumpert” filled the arena. The Knicks are 2-0 with him as the starter and 3-1 since he returned to the rotation.

Shumpert, who sprained his left knee on opening day, said that he was getting plenty of fluids but that his body was still reacclimating after a long layoff."

“I sat out nine days with my leg completely straight,” he said. “I guess my muscles got to get back used to playing so many minutes.”

Clyde attributed it to the bulky, heavy knee brace. Said that when the muscle expands, the tight brace can and will cause cramps. He also said his body was likely not accustomed to all the minutes he's been playing.

I attribute it to overcompensating for the leg he injured since it is the opposite leg.

Lots of salt, so that the body retaines water better. That's my guess.

wouldn't that actually contribute to his dehydration.
