Heat's Eddy Curry says injury is 'minor tweak'

MIAMI — Eddy Curry's road back to the NBA was a bumpy one. And now that he's back in the league, it hasn't gotten any easier.

Before signing with the Miami Heat this past week, Curry had played in just 10 games over the past three seasons because of injuries and weight issues. That trend continued after becoming a member of the Heat, as he sat out the team's first scrimmage Sunday night because of a tweaked muscle near his groin.

"We're just kind of going day by day, just trying to make sure that this is right so I don't have any setbacks, and I'm working hard in the weight room, and looking forward to getting back out there," Curry said.

The 7-footer, who said he has lost 70 pounds since he last played two seasons ago, called the injury a "minor tweak" and expects to be at full strength soon. But coach Erik Spoelstra isn't rushing things.

"I just like the fact that he's out there," Spoelstra said. "I don't want to evaluate at this point. Let's just see what he looks like each day and get him out there. Let him enjoy this."

And Curry is enjoying it.

After struggling to find an NBA team to play on, he is proud of what he has overcome to reach the place he's at now.

"I've made a lot of progress both mentally and physically to get myself at a mental place to be ready to come in here and compete," Curry said. "I'm proud of what I've done, and I still have a ways to go. But I'm happy."

I don't know if Eddy's going to be able to make it all the way back, but this was the most predictable thing in the entire NBA preseason. I wonder how long the Heat will stay patient with Eddy before giving up.

It's easy to tweak something when you're fatter than the planet Jupiter. Then again, he says he's in shape and down to a crisp, cool 335.
Surely you can't be serious. I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.

The Heat play so fast that I really have a hard time figuring how he could possibly keep up with that pace.

Eddie lost 70lbs in two years?

That net or gross?

I think he lost weight and then put it back on.

So lets say one summer he lost 30, but put back on 20. Gross loss 30, net 10.

then he lost 20, but put back on 15. Gross 20, net 5

then another 20, put it back on. Gross 20, net 0.

Total loss= 70lbs

net= 15 lbs.

Way to go Eddy!

You get a "Star"! (Weight watcher star)

It shows the desperation of the Heat in trying to find a bigger man in the middle. It's just so hard to go up against the bigger teams with a Joel Anthony in the middle. If they ever found a way to get Eddy in NBA shape he could at least give them some scoring inside. Just hard to believe he can come back after such a long layoff. It's been so long since he's played any meaningful BB.

One of the nasty things about hurting muscles near your groin is that you can't plant without hurting. Its not a good injury for a basketball player and is one that can linger for a long time. With a shortened season, conditioning and weight concerns, Eddy might not make it past training camp no matter how motivated he is.

All in the past my good man. All in the past. Now we can move on to brighter days. It turns out the light at the end of the tunnel wasn't a train after all.

At least the Bulls screwed up one of those picks by passing on LaMarcus Aldridge for Tyrus Thomas.

This is very true. I am still nursing a groin injury.

I doubt Eddy will ever be in NBA shape again. The extra weight really hinders conditioning. it's like a self defeating spiral for the guy. Plus he never has understood that it's not the Knicks or IT's fault.

If Eddy is true to form, he will come back and play in one scrimmage and pull a calf muscle. He will sit out the next two weeks. He will play his first game of the season around game 5, get hurt and will be out fOr the next 2 months and that will be it for Eddy Curry.
Trust the Process

This is very true. I am still nursing a groin injury.

I nursed one for over a year and found out that I had a sports hernia. Things are starting to get back to normal but it has taken forever.

Yeah these things are a pain in the ass. Poor Bill Walker is now nursing a groin injury too.

Green would look like a lock to stay.
Hunter and Green look like they can come in and contribute some minutes right away...

I believe we only have 1 roster spot left.
Shawne Williams will make his decision today as well.

Ak47, doesn't seem like a lot of teams are courting him.
He can play the SF, PF, C, but at his age, he probably slowed down a bit and play the backup pf/C with his length and athleticism.

Peja can still light it up and should be somehow added...
