New York Knicks Pursuing Jamal Crawford
By Alex Kennedy

One day after reaching a surprising agreement with center Tyson Chandler, the New York Knicks are attempting to acquire another notable free agent. The Knicks are zeroing in on Jamal Crawford and trying to add the veteran shooting guard through a sign-and-trade, according to sources close to the situation.

The Knicks contacted Crawford’s camp on Friday and are trying to sell him on the situation. Crawford would have to take a significant pay cut to join the Knicks, but sources say he’s open to the idea.

New York is over the cap and has no exception money. They also have few trade assets to offer. If the Hawks were willing to do a sign-and-trade with New York built around Renaldo Balkman’s $1.67 million deal, Bill Walker’s $916,000 deal and Toney Douglas’ $1.145 million deal, the Knicks would be sending out $3.73 million in salaries. The new collective bargaining agreement would allow New York to take back 150 percent plus or minus $100,000, which would give Crawford a starting salary of $5.6 million.

Last season, Crawford averaged 14.2 points for the Atlanta Hawks. In 2010, Crawford won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award. Mike Woodson, who is now an assistant coach with the Knicks, coached Crawford in Atlanta and the two are still very close.

The Knicks are doing whatever they can to surround Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire with talent. The addition of Chandler was a start and they’d love to add Crawford to their core as well.

I don't know. He's as ball dominant as it gets. Although he was doing well with D'Antoni before they traded him. If he committed to dishing it could be interesting.

please no. this makes no sense.

douglas is a perfect fit for this team. plays hard on D and knows his role.

what does crawford bring to the table? he is certainly not a distributor or a guy who runs an offense. he's an off-the-bench gunner and guy who is good at the end of games. we have melo, we have stoudemire; we need to fill players 3 through 10 in the rotation with guys who play D, who know their role, who don't demand the ball to be effective. crawford is NOT that guy.

i miss JCraw too. he was the only guy who was a professional during the isiah years. unfortunately, he just is not a good fit with carmelo and STAT. we have offense, we need defense!

douglas is a better PLAYER than crawford is!

we do need a shooter but not a high volume shooter.
Someone that is a defender and shooter.

If we go this route, I would rather go for a min Peja.

Although Crawford can play some PG, its tough, i wouldn't be totally against it.... just wont be my first choice.
I would rather have Barea.

Barea is not a defender.

Id get crawford, he shined under both coaches!

He played well under d antoni and won the 6thman award under woodson.

He can give us so many options come clutch time

Hmmm. This is interesting. My memory of Jamal is that he was GREAT at throwing the alleyoop to Curry. He's got a great handle and can get into the lane. If he used his powers for good, he could be a very useful player. People hated on him back when we didn't really have the kind of talent we have now. He's MUCH more of a passer than TD!!! He's a flawed player, but a talented one.

Allow me to jog your memories a bit. When Jamal as playing for MDA he avg'd 19.6 ppg and 4.4 assists. He shot 45% from 3pt range under MDA. I think it makes sense that they'd see Jamal as a better alternative at PG to TD. The way PG's play in this system lends itself to improved play. Just about every guard that plays for MDA sees a boost in their efficiency. It's not as bad an idea as some are making it out to be.

I loved the Chandler signing, am ambivalent about Bibby unless he starts in which case I hate it, and I am worried about what the Knicks might give up to get Crawford.
