Tyson Chandler will be a New York Knick pending league approval, the center confirmed on the Ben and Skin Show on KESN-FM 103.3 in Dallas on Friday. "Nothing is absolutely certain until you put ink to the paper," Chandler said. "I'm just waiting on that part."

Chandler said that the deal, which will not be a sign-and-trade with the Mavericks, emerged over the last 48 hours. The appeal of the Knicks roster was a selling point for the big man from the defending NBA champions.

"Being able to play alongside Amare Stoudemire , Carmelo Anthony and the young talent that they already have, I felt like that puts us in contention for the next four or five years," Chandler said.

Chandler played one season with the Mavericks after stints with the Bulls, Hornets and Bobcats, and said he appreciated Dallas for helping him win his first NBA title.

"I wanted to reach out to the people of Dallas and tell them I will always love them," Chandler said. "We had one hell of a run."

"Chandler is flying to New York and could be in the gymnasium when the Knicks open training camp at 3 p.m. in Greenburgh, N.Y."

I highly doubt Turiaf will bring a draft pick back unless we take a much longer contract with a bad player. If to Denver, I don't see us getting a pick back for Mosgov unless we included Shumpert. For Denver, only realistic option chance of getting a draft pick back is to take Harrington's contract. I am not sure if we would have to match the salary and include more salaries with Turiaf since they would be under the cap. They have a lot of free roster spots and we have a lot of 1 year deals rentals to part with.

Would we be considered under the cap, after amnestying Billups, allowing us to bid for B. Diddy?

1) Would then be able to bid for Baron Davis's contract? If we do, we don't bid for just 1 year of his services, we bid for his entire contract.

2) We also can only afford to bid in a very limited amount, depending what team, and players we trade with Turiaf, and what we acquire back. We need the money to sign Tyson Chandler.

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/7335637/center-tyson-chandler-agrees-terms-new-york-knicks

The ink on the four-year contract isn't dry yet, but free-agent center Tyson Chandler confirmed that he will sign with the New York Knicks.

Chandler said Friday on ESPN 103.3's "Ben and Skin Show" that there will not be a sign-and-trade deal with the Dallas Mavericks, the team he helped win its first championship during his lone season on the roster.
The 7-foot-1 Chandler, who served as the best defensive backbone Dallas has had in the Dirk Nowitzki era, realized almost immediately in the negotiation process that he wouldn't be able to work out a deal to return to the Mavericks.

Chandler opted to sign with the Knicks after being heavily courted by the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets among other teams.

"It just really happened over the last, like, 48 hours," Chandler said. "I just think the future of the team, being able to play alongside Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and the young talent that we have, I feel like puts us in contention over the next four or five years."

Dallas owner Mark Cuban, who is determined to maintain financial flexibility under the new, more restrictive collective bargaining agreement, offered only a two-year deal. The New York Times reported that Chandler's deal with the Knicks is expected to be in the range of $58 million for four seasons.

"In this situation, signing back with the Mavs, it just didn't make business sense," said Chandler, who averaged 10.1 points and 9.4 rebounds and finished third in Defensive Player of the Year voting. "Business is business. Sometimes we get upset by it, but in this business, we can't take it personal.

"I just honestly thank the Mavericks for even bringing me [to Dallas] and giving me the opportunity to do what we did last year. I have absolutely no animosity towards the organization or anybody involved with the organization. I will always love the organization. I will always love the fans there and everybody that has anything to do with Dallas, because that won me my first championship. We had an incredible year last year, and that will always be in my heart."

The challenge for the Mavericks in adding depth to their center rotation is getting quality players to take short-term deals to preserve maximum cap space for their summer of 2012 recruiting plans. The Mavericks did try to convince Chandler to accept a one-year deal worth a whopping $20 million, but there was never real hope of that happening, sources said.

As far back as last week, as negotiations with the Mavericks quickly stalled, Chandler told ESPN.com in a phone interview: "I really think I'm going to be on a new team come training camp."

Chandler maintains that staying in Dallas has always been his first choice, but he expressed disappointment last week that communication between the sides was minimal from the end of the NBA Finals in mid-June and the June 30 deadline for a contract extension.

The Mavericks maintain that they were reluctant to talk about an extension before July 1 because no one knew how drastic changes to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement would be at that time.

The best estimates in circulation suggest that the Mavericks would only have roughly $5 million in cap space for the summer of 2012 if they match an offer for Chandler, even if J.J. Barea is let go as expected. Fellow free agent Caron Butler already accepted a three-year, $24 million deal from the Clippers Thursday.

To have the needed cap space to bid for a player of Chris Paul's or Deron Williams' caliber if Chandler is retained, Dallas would likely need to set free either backup center Brendan Haywood or forward Shawn Marion through the amnesty clause, bid farewell to 2012 free agent-to-be Jason Terry and perhaps even be forced to send away younger prospects like Corey Brewer or Rodrigue Beaubois in trades that bring back no salary.

Chandler, 29, was acquired by the Mavericks in July 2010 in a deal sending Erick Dampier to the Charlotte Bobcats. But Chandler was widely billed at the time as a consolation prize, after Dampier's cap-friendly contract failed to get Dallas in the bidding for the league's marquee free agents -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh among them -- through various sign-and-trade offers.

Yet, Chandler wound up meshing with Nowitzki better than anyone anticipated, supplying a blend of length, athleticism, rim protection and vocal leadership that no big man who previously lined up alongside the eventual NBA Finals MVP had ever provided in Dallas.

"The most difficult thing is having to make those phone calls to Dirk and (Jason) Kidd and Jet and all the guys that I played with," Chandler said. "When I say this, I say it from the heart: I truly love those guys and I will forever, because we stood side by side and accomplished the ultimate."

Hey Ron....we now have one of...or maybe even the best front court in the entire NBA....and not just pieces....pieces that compliment each other

While not as big as Nash leaving Dallas for PHX it is almost as big. Chandler was a key piece of their success, I just don't see them getting back to the finals without him. The Knicks definitely improve with Chandler and I was a huge fan of him in the playoffs. Hopefully he keeps it up now that he got paid.

All risks aside with the signing, I prefer Chandler over CP3 - we needed size up front and Chandler brings it.

Seems like things are working out for the best. I can't say I didn't like the idea of having CP3, but I wasn't too happy about gutting the team again and the process of trying to rebuild the roster. This path is at least giving the team a chance to win now and not having to wait to fill in an entire roster. There's a lot fewer holes in the roster now. STAT, Melo & Tyson is a sick frontcourt!!!

I'm more convinced now that Nash will be here next season for the MLE than I ever was for CP3 coming this year.

Really not sure if I'm happy about this or not. The current cap with some of the new restrictions is even closer to a hard cap than before. I love the tandem of Chandler, Amar'e and Melo, but is it enough? I don't know how we build upon it.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I can't wait for the ink to dry.

So does signing Tyson Chandler over CP3 give the Knicks more $$$ to acquire other players? Or were they financially similar deals?

I read somewhere that it was a complicated deal....just waiting for the pieces to shake out. There has to be atleast one trade here.

I thought of that also. Nash is in such great shape. He's skinny, is a cardio freak, doesnt lift weights, has a super healthy diet... I could see him playing PG at a high level well past 40

Don't underestimate Fields and Iman! Fields has a 39" vert at 6-7 and rebounds, shoots well. Iman has a 42" vert, long arms, filthy thief, can do it all on the basketball court and is bigger than, as fast as and jumps higher than Westbrook! Those 2 guys are the future backcourt. I say don't be scared let them play.

if Bilups retires...do we get our amnesty and MLE back?

"But I wouldn't be surprised if Chauncey retired rather than play for a team he wouldn't want to play for," said Andy Miller, agent for the 35-year-old point guard. "He doesn't need the money, his kids are getting to an age where he wants to be an active participant, and he doesn't need the frustration and instability he's constantly dealing with. So he may choose not to play."

This is Billups agent telling teams not to pick him up. He wants to choose the team he plays for.
