Pretty good piece here. I think the rankings are very accurate as well. Definitely a possible take on the Knicks.

4. New York Knicks
Assets: Amar’e Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Landry Fields, Chauncey Billups’ expiring contract

Anchors: None

Questions: Depth, size, positional balance

Analysis: It took a long, long, long, long time, but the Knicks have reached a high-water mark in terms of roster desireability. Not only does this group boast a pair of All-Stars locked in long-term at the forward positions, the presence of multiple expiring contracts allows the flexibility needed to build around them. Are Stoudemire and Anthony an ideal pair? Probably not, at least not without an excellent point guard distributing the rock and keeping the egos in check. But even if we allow for the fact that the pairing isn't ideal, they will deliver winning seasons and playoff appearances for the duration of their contract. The rest of the pieces around them can be accumulated at whatever pace is most prudent. The roster has starpower by the boatloads and is one major move -- or two or three minor moves -- from serious title contention. Not bad at all.

I agree with this analysis. The team ended the year with a 42-40 record, but it's clearly better than that final record now. Starting the year with this group will mean more early wins than we had last year. It all depends on what we can get from our bigs and how much Iman can contribute. Everything else is set in stone right now. CB, STAT, Melo, Fields, Turiaf, TD, Iman, Williams, Walker, Jorts & Jordan. That's not a bad roster. The only caveat is if they can get a guy like Dalembert, Kwame or Pryz to land the starting spot. If they can do that this team is gonna be one of the elite in the East.

to be sure, this article is about roster rankings in terms of desirability, not probability of winning championship ranking.

Yea I noticed that when I stopped to actually read in depth. I was agreeing with the sentiments of his final sentences:

hate to be a downer, but by the same token, the Knicks are one major injury from being bottom dwellers for another decade.

That is the case with almost every team. And if CP3 is added by 2012, then we're basically in the same position as the Heat. Just with worse contracts on our big 3

injuries suck for all teams, yes. only worse when the team is top-heavy with no picks. amare or melo go down and we're toast.

These kinds of evaluations are always based on good health. How else can you really look at a team and try to figure out it's chances? How good is any team when you take away one of it's best players? What if Dirk gets hurt? Durant? I mean you can keep going and it's really not constructive. Barring some major injury, this team is going to be in a good position to compete for a title with just one or two good moves. I will say this tho, the team is better off having Melo than we were before. He at least can help the team stay in the mix if STAT went down. We already know that STAT was able to carry the team for a stretch.

i know nix. i'm just saying our team has very little margin for error. if dirk or durant go down, at least their teams likely still have picks. we don't. put me in the cautiously optimistic category. rooting for the best, but prepared for the worst.

We have very little margin for error? You are making this conclusion based on draft picks alone. We are tied into no long-term contracts for non-superstars. I would say the teams who have role players tied into long term contracts are the teams with very little margin of error if there superstar goes down. Knicks still have flexibility outside of the two stars. It's the teams who are trying to put talent around players like Dwight by trading for Arenas that have margin for error in the negatives, not us.

And to think, this time of the year, we would still be arguing over the play from the summer league. This summer really sucks. It is bad enough that the NBA season is over, but no summer league and no idea if there will be a season. It is hard to even think about rankings, but I seriously doubt the Knicks are going to be the fourth best team in the league next year. The only way that happens is if Fields takes his game up 2-3 levels, Iman actually is able to hit open jumpshots, and Jordan actual is something more than a stiff.

true. good point. that third star is still a year away though. unless we make another asset clearing trade. i sense this offseason is going to be mostly uneventful with the 2012 free agent class looming.

i just hope we're healthy all year long. amare is a concern. not having draft picks just scares me.

All of that doesn't have to happen for the Knicks to rise to the top of the league. I'd say that mostly we would just need to secure the C spot with a proven dependable player. A guy like Pryz or even Kwame would do wonders for the defense. It's not about shot blocking as much as being able to hold position on D and rebound. We got pushed around inside and if you fix that this teams D gets a lot stiffer and supports an already powerful offense. That's how this team is gonna be able to rise to the elite. It all starts in the paint now. We've got more than enough firepower on the outside.

can be accumulated at whatever pace is most prudent.

The fluff lost me here.

Pretty abstract ranking.

Well they don't have to rush and make any crazy deals. Melo is still young enough that our window is gonna be wide open for a good 5-7 years. That's the beauty of bringing in stars in their primes. The Celtics have been Rolling as contenders now for 4 years and KG was already 31 when they brought him in and Ray Allen was 32!!! We've got STAT and Melo under 30. That's not a bad scenario going forward. KG and Allen are now 35 and 36 and were darned productive at that age. STAT is 28 and Melo is 27. You add that to having a very good cap situation and this team is in great shape.

There is no need to rush any trades, i would like to see us get Chris Paul for free because i think we have all of the leverage. If we run into a Melo situation again where we have to trade Billups, Fields, Shumpert, and Jordan for Paul then we might be better off passing. Next summer we can resign Billups, sign or trade for someone like Sessions to back him up, and offer a couple of strong players like OJ Mayo and Chris Kaman reasonable contracts. But obviously first option is trying to find a way to get Paul and a very low cost.

When I was watching the finals, I definitely felt we were better than the Mavericks!
