Whatever happens in Detroit could trigger Mike D'Antoni's activity in searching for a defensive assistant coach.

All eyes will be on what happens with the Pistons head coaching position, as the finalists appear to be Mike Woodson and Lawrence Frank.

From what we've been hearing, D'Antoni personally likes Frank and there is a strong mutual interest there for many reasons.

First of all, whomever the Knicks hire would have to accept a one-year deal because D'Antoni is going into the final year of his contract and there is some uncertainty about his future. Frank, unlike most, would likely be amenable to accepting a one-year contract because it gives him the freedom to continue to look for head coaching jobs.

Frank might also prefer New York over returning to Boston for proximity reasons, as well, because he could be home full-time in New Jersey, where his wife and two daughters remained last season when he worked for the Celtics.

But Frank reportedly had a strong interview that impressed the Pistons' hierarchy, so there is a good chance he could get that job. What does that mean for D'Antoni's search for a defensive assistant?

The rest of the coaching staff hasn't been officially re-signed, but those contracts do not expire until July 31. All four -- Phil Weber, Dan D'Antoni, Herb Williams and Kenny Atkinson -- are expected back. The bigger story, of course, is who will be chosen to join them.

great news.. glad d'antoni is serious about bringing a defensive lieutenant and frank is certainly a good defensive coach, hope this works out...

This is very good news, hopefully it works out. I think it is essential for our role players, particularly Fields.

The NBA better watch out when the lockout ends, because the Knicks will be the best defensive team under mike Dantoni.

Frank worked out well in NJ back when they had Kidd and ran an uptempo offense

I would love that hire

MEH! The defense will improve when we fix the holes in the roster. All this defensive assistant stuff looks great when you have the personnel, but those guys on bad teams still lose. The best thing we did was draft a defensive guard and hopefully we can finish the job by adding a good defensive C. The rest will be about effort and desire. If we can get STAT and Melo on board with defending for an entire season that would mean more than adding some defensive coach. It's real simple stay in front of your man, get your hands up and block out for the rebound. Things this team has struggled with that have more to do with attention to detail, effort and desire.

Funny how Anthony Carter didn't need any special coaching to play D. It's not about coaching! Get some players that give a damn about D and you'll be a good defensive team. I guarantee that if we had D. Howard and Artest the team would all of a sudden look a lot tougher on D no coaching change at all.

If the defensive assistant makes the team develop that care and effort on defense, only by that he will be extremely valuable for us. But while we do need to improve the personnel to see better defense, we do need a coordinator because sometimes our D just looked unorganized and lost.

If we could care for D like we did in the first games of the playoffs...

I was never impressed with L. Frank as a coach or how his teams played defense and Woodson was just pathetic with Atl.

Artest can't stay with anybody anymore. He's a liability on both ends of the floor. His best days are waay behind him.

It would be a good move because Franks would be the next in line for the big lights in the big city with the big 3!!!!!!

Frank is a local guy, grew up in Teaneck NJ and was the towell boy for my varsity basketball team. He was always tenacious. I say he'd be a good fit for the knicks in the short and long term..

Dude was top deputy dog to the over rated Byron Scott. Say what you want about the Nets who were a pretty good team, but if its been said that Byron Scott (assistants used to rig the cassete tapes to see if he watched them) was not detailed oriented, then someone had to do the job cuz that team still went to the finals two years in a row!

still true you gotta have some players who WANT to play defense. Melo don't crack the 1st, 2nd or 3rd team all pro for a reason. DEFENSE.

Spot light is on Melo. He got what he wanted. Big city and bright lights and all the baggage that comes with it!

I was using him as an example of the kind of players you would need to improve on D. I realize Artest isn't Artest anymore. The point is that you need those kind of players to really make an impact on D. If you remove Noah and Gibson from the mix on the Bulls and just put any avg Forwards in there with the same coaching there would be a drop off.

MY MAIN POINT IS THAT THERE IS SUCH A THING AS TALENTED DEFENSIVE PLAYERS. Just like we have talented offensive players in this league. The truly elite players can impact a game on both ends.

As for our defense looking lost. A lot of that has to do with having STAT on the floor for huge amounts of time and he's not the most focused defensive player to anchor you defense. In addition to a lack of focus from other players as well. If neither STAT nor Melo come ready to play D for 48 mins, no amount of coaching is gonna matter. They play major minutes and have to be part of the solution. It starts with them both dedicating more energy on the defensive end. That's no a coaching issue!!! I'm not saying that you don't need great defensive coaching. I'm just saying that MOST of the improvement comes from the talent you have and the desire they have to play winning basketball. The Mavs could have all the coaching in the world, but until they added Chandler and some other guys that could actually defend nothing really changed.

For the offense and overall performance, when Frank was head coach? Agreed.

But I meant how the defense performed from when he was assistant coach before he took over for Byron Scott, which complimented a similar offense well.

I'm hoping this was sarcasm. No matter, I still wouldn't want a bleary-eyed midget who looks like he's always on the verge of tears to be in the long term plans of my team.

A tenacious towel boy from Teaneck as head coach. At least JVan Gundy actually played ball.

It's true. He was the "manager" of the team. He did learn a lot under our head coach who had a pretty solid reputation.

Maybe Frank will offer a different voice than these guys have been used to and just maybe that makes a difference in some of these guys. I still think that the biggest change is the mentality of our stars. STAT and Melo decide to be accountable on D, then everyone else will fall in line. I honestly think this team made a mental shift once they saw how they did against the C's. They stepped up on D and really put it to the C's in those 1st 2 games. I think STAT and Melo got to see that they could lift the team with their effort on D even more than on O.

Now factor in adding some guys that want to defend like Iman and even Jorts. Add a C like Kwame, Pryz etc. and this team could be a much tougher group going forward.

I really love Lawrence Frank - I think he'd be an ideal head coach for this team, so I'm all for bringing him on as assistant. Lawrence Frank head coach in 2012-3 with CP3, Melo, Amare would be pretty great.
