Salaries DO count because there's a cap. It's a resource that needs to be managed. It only doesn't matter in MLB, in which case a starphucking strategy is viable.
Well, the Knicks are actually managing the cap pretty well. Once Billups and Turiaf expire heading into next off-season, they'll have max cap room to get either a third star, or hopefully a couple of really good players who compliment Amar'e and Melo.
So, not really sure what the compliant is there. The Heatles took less, but they used that extra money to lock Mike Miller into a loooong deal (5yrs $34M, i think) - and he is pretty much useless at this stage of his career.
