New York Knicks
Now that the broomsticks have been unleashed and it has been emphatically established that the New York Knicks, for all their bluster and bloviating, are nothing more than an average franchise with an exorbitant payroll, it's time to move forward. To put legitimate pieces in place to preserve assets and eliminate liabilities.

And after watching the Knicks' first-round loss to the Boston Celtics -- how they spent most of Easter weekend stinking up Madison Square Garden before a 36-year-old journeyman point guard nearly came to the rescue -- priority No. 1 is too obvious to ignore any longer:

Mike D'Antoni has to go.

Hot Button: Should D'An Get Canned?

Should the Knicks fire Mike D'Antoni after their first-round loss to the Celtics? We debate. You decide. Vote Now!

It is not easy to call for the exodus of a coach who averaged 58 wins a season in his previous job, who is as kind and decent as they come. Nor does it seem fair to call for the head of a coach who, some would say, helped resurrect this franchise and made the Knicks relevant again. But when players are devoid of respect for a coach's basketball acumen, when the opposition laughs over the transparency of his game plan -- so much so that D'Antoni's players intimated they had instituted their own changes at halftime of a close-out game -- the need for a change simply cannot be denied.

The rare display of heart and guts the Knicks exhibited in the second half of Sunday's Game 4 didn't happen just because they started hitting shots and the Celtics suddenly forgot how to defend them. "We got tired of the way things were going," one player explained in the wee hours of Sunday night, long after everyone had departed from the Garden.

"We walked in at halftime and said 'We can't go out this way.' We were pretty ticked off, especially at us not seeming to have any answers scheme-wise. We knew Boston knew everything we were going to do, how we were going to do it, so we needed to do something differently. We just couldn't keep going the way we were going."As coach of the Knicks, D'Antoni deserves credit for inserting Anthony Carter into the game, allowing him to defend Rajon Rondo. He also deserves credit for allowing the team to go zone on occasion, for switching on shooters Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, with Carter serving as the catalyst. But if D'Antoni deserves credit for allowing those things to take place, he also harbors culpability for going a full game-and-a-half without a true point guard on the floor, for making little to no adjustments, for leaving the players to essentially decide for themselves at halftime Sunday that swinging back wouldn't entail just jacking up 3s inside of 10 seconds.

Notwithstanding the tremendous effort displayed in Games 1 and 2, the New York Knicks cannot play defense, folks! Primarily because schematically it's never important, nor has it ever been a priority in D'Antoni's mind.

The same coach who's being paid $6 million per season here was out in Phoenix because he would not heed former Suns executive Steve Kerr's advice that he simply couldn't win a championship with his system. Fast-forward to three full seasons later and nothing has changed.

There are high pick-and-rolls. There's Amare Stoudemire coming from the corner, getting the ball near the elbow, with everyone and their grandmother knowing that's exactly what is going to occur. Or there's Stoudemire coming from the low block to set screens -- except everyone knows he's getting the ball and that he's not going to set a screen. And intertwined with it all is the arrival of Carmelo Anthony, assigned to doing pretty much the same thing.

"Coach knows offense," one player explained. "It would be nice to set plays, control pace and not jack up shots just because you're open. But that's what Coach does. You could live with it if we played defense. But obviously, we haven't done that much. Good, bad or otherwise, all I can say is that I've never seen anything like this."Who has?

Knicks: Take 'Em or Trash 'Em?

Which Knicks would you bring back next season -- and which ones would you cut loose? Vote: Take 'Em or Trash 'Em

What team has a 6-foot-9, 230-pound player like Shawne Williams assigned to stand around and shoot 3s? What team has an athlete like Bill Walker, who's 6-6, 220, programmed to do the same? How can such a haphazard, frenetic brand of basketball -- you constantly hear D'Antoni screaming at players to shoot whenever open, no matter how much time is on the shot clock -- be permitted to continue when your $100 million franchise player just completed his ninth season? When Anthony, your other franchise player, just completed his eighth season? When both are signed for more than $80 million apiece over the next four seasons, yet based on the fatigue and injuries, neither looked as if he was physically conditioned to go another game in this series?

Just as important, what kind of players will you draft if this system remains in place? Knowing D'Antoni won't play guys who don't fit in?

The New York Knicks need a coach -- not a system. Coaches smirk at the luxury of preparing a game plan against it. Even folks like Charles Barkley have characterized D'Antoni's refusal to recognize the futility of his ways as "pure stubbornness."
This city will have plenty of time to debate the future of Donnie Walsh as the president of the franchise, and whether he should stay so he can hire former St. John's star and present ESPN/ABC analyst Mark Jackson -- or whether MSG chairman James Dolan should let Walsh go and offer the coaching job and all of the basketball operations to a man in the last year of his deal, who just finished beating up on the Knicks: Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

What's not open for debate is that it's time for D'Antoni to go.

Lest we want Amare and Melo to expire a helluva lot quicker than their contracts will.

Knicks don't need a Tom Thibodeau.

We need a flexible coach who cares about offense and defense.

We need Dantoni gone, dude is too stubborn he puts people in the dog house, doesn't make defensive adjustments and his system is garbage without an all star point guard who can push the ball not to mention 3 point shooters

It's all easy to talk about these things after the team loses it's starting PG and All Star PF plays injured. It's all BS. There's not talk like this when a team is winning. It's hard to know for sure just what Mike told the players to do or not from our vantage point. None of those players knows more about BB than Mike does, so they can keep their opinions on running a team to themselves.

Because of the players we had to limit the playbook to the basics. It's not that Mike doesn't have any answers, it's just not possible to ignore that the players also lack the ability to do certain things. For one thing Shawne Williams needs to work on his overall game in the off season. His handle and midrange game. NEVER has MDA expected any player to JUST stand around on the 3 pt line and that's it. How soon people forget that he had guys like Marion who surely did more than shoot 3's. Mike got Gallo and Chandler to be more aggressive and take the ball to the basket more. Now whether a player chooses to use that option of just take a deep shot is on them once they're on the floor.

As for the system being garbage that's just pure ignorance. Please tell us just what the principles of this system are and name just 25 of the over 110 plays for us if you know so much about what the offense is about!!! People need to stop talking about what they don't know. Almost every team could use a good PG, so it's not just a requirement of Mike's system. What we do know is that it makes his offense highly efficient and leads to a ton of wins if we have a PG that can run the offense, which we've barely had for very long. Moreover we needed size and rebounding and until we address that how good can we actually be on D? Even the announcers acknowledged that the Knicks get stops but can't secure the rebound and that leads to too many 2nd chance points. If we could've secured a few more rebounds we win games in this series. It's simple we need to upgrade the roster not the coach. Give the man a decent PG and a C so we can win.

for the last time please hire Rick Adelman just look at his profile: http://www.nba.com/coachfile/rick_adelman/index.html

key points:
-Known around the league as a basketball teacher with an ability to mold a team’s style of play around the strengths of his players

-Adelman’s trademark offenses have finished among the top five in the NBA in scoring on 12 occasions over his head coaching career. He has had three additional teams rank in the top-10 in points per game

-His teams have also shown a great balance on the defensive end of the floor. When matched with pace of play, Adelman has had seven squads (four with Portland, one with Sacramento and two with Houston) finish in the top-five in scoring defense.

games played-1561 games won945 games lost616 winning percentage.605

please dont give me D'antoni's record with Phoenix to support him. Look at his record with Denver and with us.
Adelman is a proven winner through time

Adelman>>>>>> D'antoni

if Dolan can pay Jerome James to sit down, he can pay D'antoni to leave

Its amazing how the unknown player pretty much echoes what alot of us have been saying here. MDA is a system coach who makes zero adjustments, doesn't have many set plays and doesn't control tempo. Whenever one of us brings it up, we get bashed by the MDA supporters and get reprimanded, "You dont have access to practice or the huddle so how do you know?!" Well this player obviously knows.....As much as I want Walsh back, a part of me doesn't because I feel he and MDA are joined at the surgical hip.

I would take Adelman over MDA in a heart beat. Rick is a better coach with a more grounded system.

The unknown player has to be Carter, he talks like the savvy veteran who is still shocked about the coach.

At this point I don't really know what I want. The Knicks showed me so much defense in the first two games to make me believe in D'antoni, but the last games confirmed what we all know and that is that defense isn't a consistent focus on this system. When a player talks about it its for something.

I want so many things : starting C, PG and SG, a true 6th man, a backup C, a new coaching staff, a freaking playoff win, etc. We have a lot to work on.

I was going to post the same thing. Stephen A. Smith is a jackass. He said trade the whole team for Melo and now that we got swept he wants to blame the coach. Dude is stupid.

While I tend to agree with the conclusion, it is always tedious to sift though SCREAMIN A SMITH'S logic and figure out what his point is. His editor should be flogged by gammar Nazis for putting slop like that up

D'antoni couldn't win a championship with the most talented roster in the NBA with Nash, Stoudemire, Marion, Barbosa, Bell, etc.

All because he neglected defense.

This is BS Jrz...all series long I heard how ray, pp, and the rest of boston never ever was none for there defense til kg and rondo got there and set the tone...this team (we all witness) is capable of playing very good defense, but just like most super stars, they can't play it for 48mins every night..that's on the players...

Your leader sets the tone on D...I remember melo (during the 6 game win streak) really stepping up on d and picking up the intensity (the 2 weeks he got pow) then watching his teammates follow suit..MDA may not be a defense guru..but he has emphasize defense a lot more then in the past...

SAS is a total moron, and apparently also a douche bag. He is like the Glen Beck of sports broadcasting, saying outrageous shyte just to be heard over the din of screaming sports jockeys. He can STFU and GTFO.

That said, I am not 100% sold on MDA's "system" either. But I would not discard him until he has the right players to make it work. What happened in the first round should have been expected, particularly after Billups and Stat got hurt. I think our team did amazingly well considering. The first two games were outstanding on both ends of the court.

Some decent points made by SAS but this is the same whore who screamed we had to do this trade.

Melo won't come out and say the money was his first priority but loves to talk about how winning is what its about!

Well both live in this magical world where players can move and cap space and trade assets really don't matter.

SAS is about ratings than being accountable.

Who is accountable for the team?

Fans on interent? Nope. We can spew all kinds of nonsense and demands.

Owner? He is accountable to himself and perhaps his partners or shareholders. Teams that make money are successful. Team goes a few rounds in the playoffs and can raise prices for seats and ad rates are very successful.

The Coach? First Scapegoat. Good coach adapts or uses his strenghts and let the other team adapt and try to stop it.

GM? He is accountable obove all and must get his coach the right players or the right coach for the players.

We are not privy to the plan but I think Dolan kind of ruined Donnies plan. I know Gallo is not Melo, Wilson is not Melo, and the Rainman is not melo, nor MOz, nor the legions of picks we gave up but there was a longer range plan and I wonder what it could have yielded. We all have to think over the next 5 years will Knicks make more money than Denver? Most likely. Will they win a championship before us? In the next 5 years win more games than us? Can they use the assets they got into other assets to achieve a result?

Starphuching instant gratification is more the knick way.

Im gonna be here in 5 years but the reality is Melo and AMare say the right things but can Donnie or other GM execute?

I don't see how we can become a champoinship type club. I didn't see it preTrade but you could see a LONG RANGE asset gathering.

Its not about what I think.

Mike never had a full team for more than 3 months. Defense is a complicated scheme and perhaps our new knicks never got a proper one installed because they failed when they tried.

MDA gets his full year and if they sniff 50 wins you extend him. Chaos begins with Management and while Im ok with Melo being a knick Im not happy the way it might have gone down.
