Since Billups has a team option for next year he can be traded then the other team can not pick up his option. Saving them 10+ million in 2011 salary.

The question is what team is desperate for cap relief with good players?

you have to either pick up Chauncey's option 5 days after the Knicks' last game or give him $3.7M. How is that conducive to a trade and save $10+M?

To me, the question is do we want to go all-in again hoping for a stud (Howard, CP3, Deron) after next season is over. If so, resigning Chauncey so we have his expiring coming off the books makes sense. Who are we gonna get who's better that would sign for 1 year? If we want to go for it next year, then we don't resign him and instead split his salary slot between a big and a pg. That would make us a better team next year, but, I fear, not good enough to win the ring.

All of the above, of course, depends on the how the CBA works out (assuming it does).

I think we could trade him in those 5 days.

Say we are done April 30th, you can't trade until after the finals when a window opens.

Next year for cap purpose the 3.7 is on the books. Who is a free agent in replacement.

I suggested on another thread we pay him the 3.7. Then Resign sign him for 7 mil or what ever Feltons second year is one for one this way he is happy back in Denver and we get Ray back.

WE might decide Ray is a permanent solution and we can use future cap space not on CP3 but on a deeper team going forward.

I think we are allowed to make trades once "our season" is over. We just could trade with teams still in the playoffs. Raymond Felton is not a facilitator.

92. What is the trading deadline?

It is the date during the season after which trades are prohibited. It is defined as the 16th Thursday of the season. The prohibition on trades lasts until the day following the team's final game of the season (see question number 88).

I would do this, but would Denver?

Ask yourself when has this ever been done, then you should now how your suggestion will turn out. Marc Spears from Yahoo did say we were picking up the Option when trade was consummated

If you look at question 88 from coon...

In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

When the trading deadline has passed. Teams are free to make trades again once their season has ended, but cannot trade players whose contracts are ending or could end due to an option or ETO.

Dallas signed Keith Van Horn, who were sitting at home 2 season ago just to make a trade. I dont recall that happening before.

All Im saying is this can be an option especially with the massive hole at C, SG, and PG that needs to be filled on this team.

Ah so we'd have to pick up his option before the trade. That sucks.

Maybe he will be agreeable to a buyout if we trade him to a sucky team.

Billups contract window is 5 days after the end of the NBA season, not just the Knicks part in it. He could theoretically be traded during that window, as it'd be after the Finals.

I would look to trade him or buy him out. Dude is shot and always going to be injured.

If you don't pick up that option, you will give up any salary cap exceptions, like the MLE, the first year player exception, the LLE, to the extent these exceptions continue to exist under the new CBA.

You really don't gain anything by not picking up Chauncey's option.

You know I gonna spin wit it

I'd prefer to keep him and have him train our young guards for a year. I don't think what we could get back in return in either space or assets would be equal value to what we can gain from him teaching our guys.
