I think I agree with that statement for the most part. Like many of you I've been disappointed with Billups (stupid) play, the injury affected him but not his mind. It always comes down to the playoffs and if he doesn't perform, I say that is evidence enough not to bring him back. We did the trade (says Walsh), in large part because of Billups, so if he doesn't perform, if he gets burned by quicker pg's in the playoffs, I say we buy him out. The only chance we have with Billups out there is if he guards the SG and that would mean Dougie being out there most likely (which might not be bad if Fields is still hitting the wall.

Title taken from this article: http://www.fromthebaseline.com/home-mainmenu-1/blogs/3669-enough-talk-knicks-need-billups-to-step-it-up

(Big C) As the season winds down and the Knicks get closer to the playoffs it is clear that that Knicks need to finish strong. They need to rest Amar’e and figure out what rotation to usefor going into the playoffs. One major concern right now is the performance of new Knicks’ point guard Chauncey Billups.

When the Knicks acquired Chauncey Billups in the trade for Carmelo Anthony many fans and basketball experts talked about how the Chauncey Billups was the second best player in the trade. We heard about Billups leadership, clutch shooting, defense, and the ability to control the team. Many of these attributes describe Billups on the Pistons but not the Billups of 2011. So far, Knicks fans have seen more of the contrary with Chauncey Billups running the point.

So far Billups has looked out of sync running the offense. At times it looks like he is just making up plays and is only looking for his own shot. Chauncey looks like he is trying to run a triangle offense by himself, with himself---maybe I should call it a “quadrilateral offense”. Now I understand it takes time for Billups to build chemistry with Amar’e and his teammates. However, it is very difficult build chemistry with your teammates if you are only interested in your own shot.

Now we all know Billups is not 100% after he was hurt bumping into Dwight Howard. However, that is no excuse for taking poor shots, trying score in crowd of defenders, or shooting 3 point shots when his shot is not falling. There are a few games the Knicks could have lost based on Billups taking ill advised 3 point shots on his on. Currently as a Knick, Chauncey Billups is shooting 39% from the field, and 31% from 3 point range. We need Billups to look to his teammates rather than his own shot.

Besides Billups offense, his defense looks shabby against quicker point guards. In recent weeks we have seen many point guards take Billups off the dribble to either score or dish for the assist. Billups is now a liability on the defensive end of the court.

With the playoffs right around the corner it is crucial for Billups to show his leadership, and bring his A game. When I say bring his A game I don't just mean having big scoring night. I would like to see Billups close out the season and the playoffs with him:

Taking timely shots. Not just taking 3’s but Billups using more of his midrange shot and drive when the lane is open.
Pushing the ball more.
Looking more to run the pick and roll with Amar’e
Bringing more of an effort on defensive end of the court. That includes one-on-one defense and help defense
Continuing to talk with his teammates when they are out of sync on defense and offense.

Overall, how Billups plays in the playoffs will determine if he will be back next season or not. The key for Billups is for him to play the way people remember him playing in the past.

I think how Billups plays in the playoffs will determin if he will be back next season or not.
I think Billups should be back no matter how he plays in the playoffs.

Like alot of other things with this team he will be judged on the playoffs. We would be insane to pick up his option if he continues to play like this.

No, there are also hidden options.

If he steps up his play having him for one more season might be worth it. It depends. We might want to use his contract in a trade.

I don't understand how we can use his contract though. There is no chance we can put together a package for Chris Paul. What other assets do we have? Fields, Douglas? I'm sure they can get much much better - as Utah did. I can see us using his contract to take on a big contract that another team doesn't want, but who wants to get rid of a great player for nothing? (Baron Davis like?)

edit - Think of big expiring contracts in recent years. How many have amounted to anything? (Outside of McGrady. ehehe)

I'm not sure Billups heart is here, and picking up his option, even if he plays well, may quite well be a waste.

I don't know how to read CB. He says he actually hopes that he can stick around here for more than his contract. I don't know how to read his value to the team either. As a scorer he still has the ability to get it done IMO. I think his shooting numbers are a combination of the trade and injury. I think when he's healthy as he seems to be right now, he can still score the ball. Unless he can get the hang of this system his value will be lessened cuz he won't be able to help STAT get off as our PG should. The playoffs will tell us a lot as will the last few regular season games.

I don't care how well Billups plays in the playoffs, no way he is worth $14 million. Regardless, the Knicks need to buy him out and resign him to a more reasonable deal.

14 mil no. But he gets like 3-4 mil to if we don't pick it up.

I think we have already did a hand shake deal to do it. im sure Dolan in his impatient premature ejaculation already agreed.

I think Sheridan was asked about this in his chat and he said that he saw the Knicks picking up Billups extension. He said the team wants to be able to be a player in the 2012 free agent market and if they buy out Billups to sign someone else they would lose that flexibility.

Well, we might have just seen Billups last game this year as a Knick (hope his knee is ok). Sure doesn't make the decision any easier (considering he played crappy).

Last time he got hurt, Dougie really raised his game.

The expiring has trade value if nothing else. Gotta have something of value to trade for Deron or Paul.

Last nite The New Knuggs did not come up big when it counted. Melo, Felton, Billups, Gallo, and Chandler.

Both teams lost down the stretch.

I wonder if we can buy out Billups, resign him to a modest deal and trade him back to Denver for Felton. Wishful thinking. I understand Chauns was traded for salary purpose but his heart is in Denver and perhaps his front office ambitions takes him back anyway.

Unless we have Paul coming as free agent (the do I wait until free agent and risk injury game again)or go all in for Dwight I can live with him at the point.

I defy anyone to beat:

Dwight
Amare
Melo
Felton
Fields/other.........

Fields has to get his shot together but that is a sick sick front court!

Billups played as unsavvy and unveteran as a former Finals MVP can. Why playing so out of control, not setting up plays and instead shooting early in the shot clock. He really came up short, then we lost him again (damm Howard).

I really believe that more than Billups specifically, we need solid pg play down the stretch. That may only mean more minutes to Carter, who seems to always be a + for us.

Billups is not a good player anymore. He is out of control and doesn't play with veteran poise.

Agreed on contested three pointers with 16 seconds on the clock. He didn't create any opportunity for anyone on the floor and couldn't get by Rondo.

We will the game last night with Felton playing the point. We win that game with our old guys and it's not even close. When you starting point guard has 5 assists and 4 turnovers shoots a horrible percentage you're not going to win the game. Can someone tell me the last time Billups really earned his nickname.

Carter 100% needs more time. His defense is awesome and he can penetrate better than Chauncey.

THe problem with buying him out is that we have to resign him to a multi-year deal. If we pay him the $14 mil next year, he drops off the cap at the end of the season and we will hopefully have enough room to sign CP3 or deron williams.

Trust the Process

but really, does his expiring have any real leverage? It's good if NO wants to move OK4, but that's it. Neither NJ or NO move their guys just for Billups expiring.
