This is the perfect big man for our system. He's a top-notch defender, good athlete, finisher, and makes good decisions. He's also a top center in the league in terms of true PG rating. There is very little chance we can get a 3rd star, so i just think we go all-in on draft day and trade our first round pick, Turiaf, and one other piece to Cleveland, who is probably interested in stacking picks and saving some money for a full-blown rebuild. Varejao also has a pretty reasonable contract for a center and should be easy to move in case we ever can make a move at another star. In addition, we should have no problem buying a late first round pick and finding a solid rotation player and good asset for the future, similar to finding Fields and Douglas the late couple years later in the draft.

C Varejao PF Stoudemire SF Anthony SG Fields PG Billups 6th Douglas 7th Jeffries 8th S. Williams

I like the guy on this team, though would prefer someone who could shoot some. The problem is we don't have any cap space if we resign Billups (and even if we don't I don't think we'd have enough for him). He is also coming off a serious injury and I'd rather see what he has than buy damaged goods. Not sure I'd want to give up our first for him considering that, otherwise I might.

We need to see what is available at our draft slot as far as Centers go. Faried actually will give us most of what Verejao does (minus some needed size/weight).

edit - I checked, he is signed through 2013. Who can we possible trade for him of value? We are gutted and need who we have actually. I don't see it happening. We have few assets. I wouldn't give up Douglas or Fields for him but the salaries don't match anyway.

I think the chance to get Varejao ended once we gave up almost every asset for Melo.

The way I see things, the only tradeable assets we have are Douglas and the first round pick. I don't think it's enough to get Varejao, at least. There's only pieces we have that can be used in trades, but none of them are more than marginally valuable right now. Maybe that will change in a year, if one of these guys is putting up stellar numbers, but until then, I don't see it.

Our main asset right now is cap room, and I think that asset is only coming in 2012. We'll see.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

He's nice but I'm not adding that salary and then locking myself into that team for the foreseeable future...May not be good enough to win a chip and I'm not interested in finding out the hard way..This summer go get me Marcus Cousin and Jeff Adrien on 1 year deals for less than $2M combined..Bring in DeShawn Sims too for 700-800K..Same for Jerome Jordan: 700-800K..Then I'd look to draft a Marshon Brooks as our 6th man and possible S Williams/Walker replacement (possible Fields replacement as well if Fields eventually demands too much money)..Another early to mid 2 we look to purchase wouldn't be a bad idea either--same purpose--wing depth/wing replacement unless a good viable big slips or a halfway decent PG is there..All low cost deals, all one-year deals except for Brooks and Brooks would still be quite manageable at only $1.5M or so..That's a TON more value than Varejao by himself, all on short manageable deals..We'd still be players in 2012.

At least Varejao is much better option than a beat writer like Jay Greenberg pounding the drum for another little man

"The new CBA will tell whether the Knicks still will have cap room to fill in Chris Paul or Deron Williams and winning role players besides. Getting the second star was the right priority, though, and Anthony and Stoudemire will learn how to best complement each other."

sheesh

What are we prepared to trade for Varejao btw?? Cleveland ain't gonna just give this guy to us. Varejao makes $7.7M next year..It would have to be something like Turiaf/Toney Douglas/2011 1st rounder/Fields/Rautins minimum. I'm not giving that up for him..Not when I can add Marcus Cousin AND Jeff Adrien for less than 2M combined..And we keep all our players.

Q. Finestrg: What are we prepared to trade for Varejao?

A. Apparently not much. Dreck and our first round pick would make the Cavs GM Chris Grant break into hysterical laughter.

He's a roleplayer and makes too much. This wouldn't be a good use of our resources for the near term.

Honestly I think if you can rehab Sean Williams (and it looks like he's starting to come around), you have the potential for a really interesting defensive center.

Sean Williams might rebound and block shots, but he is not a good one on one defender (Mos actually wasn't bad). Sean has no size and gets pushed around. I'm not against him though, I'm just saying that there are those big body centers to go against Bynum, Perkins, etc. and then those "other centers".

No. Better off with much cheaper guys like Ben Wallace.

I still think that Sean Williams should play at least some minutes. He is the best rebounder and low post defender on the team (nos staying much but still).
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

I'd trade our draft pick and whoever for Varejao and Sessions.

well duh, right? I'd trade out draft pick and whomever for DHoward.

I don't think either will happen.

Another option, and maybe a more realistic one, would be to grab Jason Thompson from Sac. He's on a rookie contract, has reasonable upside, and is solid on both sides of the ball. Could fit in pretty well, and could also be had for our 1st round pick. He's basically like drafting a big man, only difference is you know for sure he will contribute at a high level right away.

Dwight Howard please. Am I dreaming? lol sign Dwight Howard in 2012 with the remaining cap space and re-unite Nash with Amare and Mike with the MLE or something. He would take less to win plus he's getting up there in age.

Nash
Anyone
Melo
Amare
Howard

:D

Three max contracts?

You better be ready to fill the rest of the roster with middle schoolers

I like his game but I'd rather the Knicks got someone who makes the other team think twice about taking the ball to the rim.
